How to renew unemployment benefits after my NYS Department of Labor claim expired?

My unemployment benefits ran out about 6 weeks ago and I'm still looking for work. I heard you might be able to renew or restart your claim somehow? I was getting regular UI for about 20 weeks but then it just stopped. My job search has been going nowhere and I really need to figure out if there's a way to get benefits again. Has anyone successfully renewed their unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor? What's the process like?

You can't exactly 'renew' an expired claim, but you might be able to file a new one if you've worked enough since your last claim started. NYS Department of Labor requires you to have worked and earned wages during your benefit year to establish a new claim. Check your my.ny.gov account to see if you can start a new application.

I did work a temp job for about 3 months during my benefit year but it didn't pay much. Would that be enough to qualify for a new claim?

The key thing is whether you earned enough wages to meet the monetary requirements for a new benefit year. NYS Department of Labor looks at your earnings from the last 18 months. If your temp work pushed you over the threshold, you should be able to file a new initial claim. Otherwise, you might need to look into extended benefits if they're available, though those programs change frequently.

How much do you need to earn to qualify for a new claim? I'm in a similar situation.

You need at least $2,600 in covered wages during your base period, plus wages in at least two quarters. The exact amount for your weekly benefit depends on your highest quarter earnings.

I had the same problem trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about my expired claim. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to an agent in like 15 minutes. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. The agent was able to look at my work history and tell me exactly what I needed to do to file a new claim.

Just wanted to add that if you do qualify for a new claim, you'll have to go through the whole process again - job search requirements, waiting week, all of it. Make sure you have all your employment documentation ready before you start the application.

Thanks for the heads up! Do I need to report the temp work I did while on my previous claim when I file the new one?

Yes definitely report all work and wages. That's actually what might qualify you for the new claim in the first place.
