How late can you file unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor?

I got laid off from my manufacturing job back in November but didn't apply for unemployment right away because I thought I'd find something quickly. Now it's been almost 2 months and I'm wondering if I waited too long to file with NYS Department of Labor? Is there a deadline for when you can apply for UI benefits? I'm really stressed about this because I've been burning through my savings and need to know if I can still get help.

You can still file! NYS Department of Labor doesn't have a strict cutoff date for filing initial claims, but you'll only get benefits from the week you actually file forward - not backdated to when you were laid off. So file ASAP to start your weekly claims process.

Thank god! So I won't get those 8 weeks I missed but I can start getting benefits from this week forward?

Technically there's no deadline but you're losing money every week you don't file. NYS Department of Labor will need verification of your employment and reason for separation. Make sure you have your employer info and dates ready when you apply online.

this is why i filed the day after i got laid off, even though my boss said the layoff might only be temporary

I'm in the same boat! Got let go in December and keep putting off filing because the my.ny.gov website is so confusing. Does anyone know how long it takes for claims to get approved once you finally submit?

Usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. But if they need to verify your employment or if there's any question about why you left your job, it could go into adjudication which takes longer.

Had a nightmare trying to reach NYS Department of Labor when my claim got stuck in verification hell last year. Spent weeks calling that stupid 888 number and getting nowhere. Finally used claimyr.com and got through to an actual person who sorted everything out in one call. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works - basically they handle the phone maze for you.

How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money which is why I need to file in the first place.

Way cheaper than missing weeks of benefits while trying to get through yourself. Plus they actually get results instead of just endless hold music.

The whole system is a joke anyway. I filed immediately when I got fired and STILL had to wait 6 weeks because they said they needed to 'investigate' my termination. Like what's to investigate - company had layoffs and I got cut!

sounds like your employer might have contested the claim or said you were fired for cause instead of laid off

Just file now dude don't overthink it. Yeah you missed some weeks but better late than never. The longer you wait the more you're screwing yourself over.
