Got a nonmon determination from NYS Department of Labor - what does this mean?
I just received a letter from NYS Department of Labor about a 'nonmon determination' on my unemployment claim and I have no idea what this means. The letter is confusing and doesn't really explain it in plain English. My claim was approved initially but now there's this determination thing. Is this bad? Should I be worried about my benefits getting cut off? I've been filing my weekly claims normally and doing my job search activities. Anyone else get one of these nonmon determinations?

A nonmonetary determination (nonmon) is basically NYS Department of Labor making a decision about your eligibility that isn't related to your wages or benefit amount. It could be about job search requirements, availability for work, reasons for separation from your last job, or other qualifying factors. The determination will specify what issue they reviewed and their decision. Check the letter carefully for the specific reason code and whether it's favorable or unfavorable.

•Thanks! It says something about 'able and available' but I've been marking yes to that every week. Not sure why they'd question it.

The key is whether it says 'favorable' or 'unfavorable' on the determination. Favorable means you keep your benefits, unfavorable means they're stopping or reducing them. If it's unfavorable, you have appeal rights - usually 30 days from the date on the letter. Don't ignore it if you disagree with their decision.

•It says unfavorable and something about not being available for full-time work. But I am available! I think there might be a mistake.

•Definitely appeal that if you believe you're available for full-time work. Gather any documentation that shows your availability and file the appeal ASAP.

I had trouble reaching anyone at NYS Department of Labor about my determination for weeks. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Got connected within a few hours and the agent explained exactly what my nonmon determination meant and what I needed to do.

•How much does something like that cost? I've been trying to call for days with no luck.

•Worth checking out their site for details. For me it was definitely worth it to finally talk to someone who could explain what was happening with my claim instead of guessing.

The whole nonmon determination process is just another way for NYS Department of Labor to make things confusing and stressful. They send these vague letters that nobody understands then make you jump through hoops to get answers. Classic bureaucracy BS.
