Filed for NY unemployment in August - no payments, no responses, can't reach anyone by phone

I submitted my unemployment claim on August 12th and it's been almost 2 months with absolutely nothing. No payments, no updates, nothing. I've sent 4 messages through their message center and haven't gotten a single response. Tried calling at least 30 times but can't get through to a human - just endless automated messages and then disconnects. Is it possible to physically go to their office in Albany to speak with someone face-to-face? This is getting ridiculous. My savings are almost gone and rent is due next week. Has anyone successfully visited their office in person or found another way to actually reach a real person?

I feel your pain... Same boat but even worse - been waiting since July 23. The phone system is a complete joke. You literally CANNOT get through no matter what time you call. I tried at 7:58am thinking I'd beat the rush and still got the 'too many callers' message.

July?! Omg that's insane. What have you been doing for money since then? I'm seriously worried about making rent next month.

I've been doing doordash and instacart but barely making enough for groceries. Had to borrow from family for rent last month 😞

Try calling at exactly 8:01am. That worked for me once, but took 3 hours on hold after that.

After 3 weeks of trying the phone with no luck, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that kept calling for me and then connected me when they got through to a real person. Talking to an agent got my payments released within days. Honestly it was the only way I could talk to a live agent. Check out their explainer here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

sounds fishy af... another 'miracle solution' promising the impossible. u actually try this or just spamming?

I 100% used it and it worked. Was desperate after trying to call for weeks. They just keep calling for you and then ring your phone when they get through. Best money I spent to get my benefits flowing again.

wait does this actually work? i've been trying to get through for a month now and I'm at my wits end 😫

Yeah it worked for me. You just pay them to do the calling/waiting and they call you when they get a real person. Then you talk directly to unemployment.

not falling for more unemployment 'hacks'... these things are never as easy as they sound lmao

I actually used this too. It's just a call service, they don't do anything except get through the phone system for you. Then you talk directly to NY unemployment yourself.

To answer your actual question - NO, the Albany office doesn't accept walk-ins anymore. They stopped that during covid and never brought it back. I tried going there in May and there were signs everywhere saying appointments only, but no way to actually make an appointment 🤡

I was in the same situation in June. The msg center is useless. I started calling my local state assembly person's office and they were able to escalate my claim. Try that route - google your district and call them ASAP.

That's a great idea, didn't even think of that. How long did it take after you contacted your assembly person?

Took about 10 days from contacting them to getting my first payment. They have special contacts at nysdol that regular people dont have access to.

THIS!!! 💯 Assembly people are literally the only ones who can cut through the red tape. My guy got it solved in 2 weeks after I spent 3 months trying on my own.

There's actually a trick to the phone system that sometimes works. Call the spanish line and then press 9 for english. Way less people use that line so you sometimes get through faster. Still ridiculous we have to use hacks just to talk to someone 🙄

Tried this yesterday and still got the 'too many callers' message after 15 minutes on hold. System is completely broken.

I've heard this trick before but never works for me. They must have caught on cuz it seems like everyone knows this 'secret' now lol

OK this is gonna be long but I want to actually help you fix this because I went through it too. The NY unemployment system is overwhelmed and broken, but there are specific steps that can get your claim moving: 1) First, contact your local state assembly member or state senator. Their offices have direct lines to DOL specialists and can escalate your claim. This usually takes 1-2 weeks but has a high success rate. 2) Document EVERYTHING. Date/time of all calls, names of any representatives you speak with, screenshots of your online account. This documentation helps when you need to prove you've been trying. 3) If you need immediate action, the Claimyr service (claimyr.com) can actually get you through to a live agent. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they reach a person. Many people in this sub have confirmed it works. 4) Make sure your online profile has no pending items. Sometimes there's a document or question waiting for response that's holding everything up. 5) Check your spam/junk email folders daily. DOL emails sometimes end up there. Don't give up - it's a frustrating system but persistence pays off. The backlog still exists but claims ARE being processed eventually.

Thank you so much for this detailed help. I'm going to try contacting my assembly member today. Have you personally used Claimyr?

Yes I did use it after trying for 3 weeks to get through on my own. They connected me with an agent who fixed my claim in one call. Just be ready with all your info when they connect you.

I can second the assembly member approach. My rep's office got my claim fixed in about 10 days after I had been waiting for over a month with no movement.

The whole system is a nightmare rn. My friend just got his first payment last week after waiting since APRIL. They don't care about us at all. It's by design to make people give up.

0 coins

holy shit, APRIL?? that's criminal. they're literally forcing people into homelessness with these wait times.

Yep. He had to move back in with his parents at 32 years old. System is broken AF.

protip: early morning calling doesnt work anymore. everyone knows that trick now. Ive had better luck calling around 2-3pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays for some reason.

ur better off going on twitter and making a public complaint and tagging the governor and NYSDOL. they hate the bad PR and sometimes will have someone contact you directly. worked for me back in February

This actually works! I did the same in March and got a call the next day from their social media team. They hate public complaints.

Uggggh another NYS unemployment hostage 😭 I swear its like this on purpose. Try claimyr.com - it was the only thing that worked for me after 6 weeks of trying.

0 coins

what exactly is claimyr? is it like those paid services that file for you? i got scammed by one of those before

0 coins

Adrian Hughes

•

No totally different - they JUST help you get past the phone system. Then YOU talk directly to unemployment yourself. They don't file anything for you or need any of your personal info.

have you tried the governors office? I emailed them at Chamber.sm@exec.ny.gov with my situation and got a callback from unemployment the next day. Make your email desperate but polite.

Whatever you do, DO NOT pay for one of those unemployment filing services. Total scams. They take your money and do nothing you couldn't do yourself.

0 coins

100% this. My roommate paid $200 to one of those places and they literally just filled out the same form that's free on the website. Total ripoff.

claimyr isn't one of those tho - they just help you get past the phone system. worked for me when nothing else did.

After I couldn't reach anyone for weeks, I actually submitted a complaint to the NY State Attorney General's office about DOL. Got a call from unemployment 3 days later. Might be worth a shot if nothing else works.

•

This is actually brilliant. How do you file a complaint with the AG?

0 coins

Mateo Warren

•

Go to ag.ny.gov and look for the complaint form. Choose "consumer complaint" and explain your situation, mentioning how long you've been waiting and how it's causing financial hardship.

Did you check your payment history on the website? Sometimes they approve you but the notification email gets lost, so the money hits your account but you dont know why. Worth checking.

I checked and there's nothing there. Just shows my claim was received but no updates since then.

I got locked out of my account because I tried to log in too many times with the wrong password. took 5 WEEKS to get it unlocked. The ny unemployment system is literally from 1970 running on ancient computers.
