Extensions still available for ny unemployment after regular benefits run out?
My regular unemployment benefits are about to run out next week (used up my 26 weeks). The NY unemployment website mentions something about a 13-week extension but the info seems outdated from 2021. Can't tell if this extension program is still active in 2023 or if it ended with all those pandemic programs back in September 2021? I've been trying to figure this out for days - the website is super confusing and gives contradicting information. When I try calling, I just get an automated message and then disconnected. I still need support as I haven't found work yet despite applying to literally hundreds of jobs since February. Has anyone successfully gotten an extension recently? Do I need to apply for it separately or does it happen automatically? Really stressed about what happens when my benefits stop in a week.

The 13 week extension ended with the federal programs. Unfortunately there are no more extentions available after your 26 weeks run out. NY unemployment system went back to pre-pandemic rules. I found this out the hard way when my benefits ended in August. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😕

•Ugh this is the worst news. Thanks for letting me know though... guess I need to figure something out fast 😔

•Thats not 100% true. You might qualify for something called EB (Extended Benefits) if the states unemployment rate is high enough. Check if EB is triggered ON for NY right now.

•EB isn't triggered in NY right now. Unemployment rate isn't high enough. Hasn't been triggered since like early 2022.

After trying to get thru on the phones for WEEKS, I used a calling service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and finally got to talk with a rep. They confirmed to me that the 13-week extension programs ended back when the federal pandemic assistance stopped. Talking to an agent got my final payment sorted out super fast - it was the only way I could talk to a live agent after so many failed attempts. Here's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Is this claimyr thing actually work? seems kinda sketchy ngl

•Yeah it actually does. I was super hesitant too but was desperate after trying to call for like 3 weeks straight. They just dial for you and call you when they get someone on the line. Got me through to an agent in about 45 min when I couldn't get through at all by myself.

•wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the unemployment phone system is literally designed to make you give up 🤮

•It worked for me! The agent I talked to told me my claim had a flag on it that I never would've known about otherwise. Got it fixed and payment came 2 days later.

•So I was about to throw my phone after 3 hours on hold when I tried this Claimyr thing. Worked exactly as advertised. My phone rang and boom - actual human from unemployment on the line. Totally worth it in my situation.

The 13 week extension (PEUC) ended in September 2021 with all the other federal programs. Now we're back to just the regular 26 weeks. Its completely ridiculous that the website still mentions programs that don't exist anymore! 🤬 Just another example of how terrible the system is.

Hey so I went through this in November. There ARE still some options but they're super limited. If you have worked AT ALL during your benefit year (even part time) you might be able to file a new claim after your current one expires. Otherwise your basically SOL after 26 weeks now unless u qualify for some very specific programs like Trade Act benefits if your job was outsourced abroad.

•I did have a part-time gig for about 6 weeks in the summer. How do I find out if that's enough to qualify for a new claim?

•You need to have earned at least 10x your weekly benefit rate across multiple weeks in covered employment. So if your weekly benefit was $300, you need to have earned at least $3000 across multiple weeks. Call and ask if youve met the threshold.

I'm in the exact same boat - my benefits run out next month and idk what I'm gonna do. The economy is still terrible for job hunting despte what the news says. I've applied to over 200 positions since january and had like 5 interviews, no offers. It's brutal out here 😭

•Same! Applied to 170+ jobs and got 3 interviews that went nowhere. Then media talking about "nobody wants to work" 🙄

•The job market is so weird right now. Companies claiming they can't find workers but then ghosting qualified candidates. Hope things turn around for all of us soon.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment after regular UI exhaustion (I used to work for the unemployment office): 1. The 13-week extension you're referring to was the PEUC program, which ended permanently in September 2021 along with all other pandemic-related benefits. 2. The standard 26 weeks of regular UI is all that's available now in New York unless the state hits certain high unemployment triggers, which it currently hasn't. 3. The website is confusing because they never properly updated all pages after the pandemic programs expired. Many pages still reference programs that no longer exist. 4. If you've worked even part-time during your benefit year, you might qualify for a new claim if you earned at least 10x your weekly benefit amount and worked in multiple weeks. 5. After benefits exhaust, consider applying for other assistance programs like SNAP (food stamps) or HEAP (heating assistance) if you qualify based on income. 6. If you're still struggling to get answers, use claimyr.com to get through to an agent. The regular phone system is deliberately designed to frustrate callers and minimize agent contact. 7. If your job loss was due to foreign trade or certain other specific circumstances, ask specifically about Trade Adjustment Assistance. Good luck - the system is definitely not user-friendly!

•Did you actually work for NYSDOL? This info is gold. Why don't they just clearly put this on their website??

•Yes, I did for 4 years. And they don't make it clear because honestly, the less people who successfully navigate the system, the less benefits they have to pay out. Sad but true. The system is designed to be difficult.

FWIW I was in this situation back in feb and I DID get some additional weeks but I think it was because my benefit year hadn't ended yet (just my 26 weeks). Its super confusing and depends on your specific situation. The only way to know for SURE is getting someone on the phone...which is practically impossible 🙃

I went through this last month and I can confirm all the federal extensions ended in 2021. NY unemployment is back to just regular 26 weeks now. The fact that they still mention the extensions on the website is peak government incompetence. Sorry you're dealing with this.

Look into 599 training program! If you qualify and enroll in approved training/education, you can sometimes get additional UI benefits while you're in school getting new skills. Google "NY 599 unemployment training" - this is still active!

•I did the 599 program last year and it was a lifesaver. Got certified in IT and now have a decent job. The approval process takes a few weeks tho so start ASAP.

After my regular benefits ran out, I couldn't get straight answers on the phone about any extensions. Eventually got connected to a supervisor through claimyr.com who explained everything clearly. Turns out there were NO extensions available but she helped me file for other assistance programs I didn't know I qualified for. Sometimes you just need to talk to the right person.

•What other assistance programs did they recommend? I'm open to anything at this point.

•SNAP benefits (food stamps), HEAP for utilities, and in my case I qualified for some rental assistance through a county program. The unemployment supervisor knew about local resources most regular agents didn't mention.

If your benefits are running out, immediately apply for SNAP benefits if you haven't already. The income requirements are much easier to meet once unemployment ends and it helps a lot with food costs. Don't wait until you're completely broke to apply for other assistance!

i've heard rumors that NY might bring back some extended benefits because of rising unemployment in the state but nothing official yet. tbh i wouldn't count on it tho. the govt basically wants to pretend the econonomy is perfect now 🤡

•lmao but for real tho - all these complicated systems and extensions and rules just to give people basic support. UBI would solve so much of this bureaucratic mess.

Another option - check with 211 (just dial 211 on your phone). They can connect you with local emergency assistance programs. Some counties have special funds to help when unemployment runs out. It's worth calling them to see what's available in your area.

•100% this. My cousin works in government IT and says they could fix these systems in a heartbeat, but there's no political will to make them user-friendly. It's all about making it hard to claim benefits.

hey quick tip - since ur benefits are ending soon make sure u request payment on your VERY LAST DAY you're eligible. I missed my last payment because I waited until my regular day and it was too late. Don't make my mistake!

The confusion is real. I was getting different answers every time I called NY unemployment. Finally I used claimyr.com which got me through to an agent who actually knew what they were talking about. Saving hours on hold was worth every penny when I was stressing about my benefits ending.

•Totally get the skepticism, I felt the same way. But after two weeks of failed calling I was desperate. They just dial for you and connect when someone answers. Saved me literal hours of hold music hell.

check your monetary benefit determination letter. It should tell you exactly how many weeks you're eligible for. Most people get 26 weeks but some get less depending on your work history. might be worth double checking if you actually have the full 26.

I'm so sorry you're going through this stress! I was in a similar situation last year and it's absolutely nerve-wracking when benefits are about to end. From what I learned, the 13-week PEUC extension did end in September 2021 along with all the other pandemic programs. NY is back to the standard 26 weeks only. However, don't give up hope completely! A few things to check: 1. If you worked ANY part-time job during your benefit year (even just a few weeks), you might qualify for a new claim if you earned enough. The threshold is usually 10x your weekly benefit amount across multiple weeks. 2. Look into the 599 training program that someone mentioned above - if you can get approved for certain training/education programs, you might be able to extend benefits while in school. 3. Even though there are no unemployment extensions, definitely apply for SNAP (food stamps) and other assistance programs ASAP. Don't wait until you're completely broke. The phone system is absolutely terrible, but if you're really desperate to talk to someone, several people here have had success with that claimyr service. I was skeptical too but when you're facing benefits ending, sometimes you need to try everything. Hang in there - you're not alone in this struggle! 💙

•Thank you so much for this comprehensive response! This is exactly the kind of detailed info I needed. I'm definitely going to look into the 599 training program - that sounds like it could be a real lifesaver. And you're right about applying for SNAP and other assistance now rather than waiting. I've been putting it off because I kept hoping something would work out with the unemployment extensions, but I need to be realistic about my situation. Really appreciate you taking the time to lay all this out clearly! 🙏

I went through this exact same situation in October and it's incredibly frustrating how unclear the system is! Unfortunately, the 13-week extension (PEUC) you're seeing mentioned on the website did end permanently in September 2021 with all the other federal pandemic programs. NY is back to just the standard 26 weeks now. BUT - don't panic just yet! Here are a few things that might help: 1. Since you mentioned having a part-time job for 6 weeks in summer, you should definitely call and ask if you qualify for a new claim. You need to have earned at least 10x your weekly benefit amount across multiple weeks of work during your benefit year. 2. Look into the 599 training program immediately! If you can get approved for certain vocational training or education programs, you can potentially extend benefits while you're in school. This is one of the few ways to get additional weeks in NY right now. 3. Start applying for SNAP, HEAP, and other assistance programs NOW - don't wait until your benefits actually end. The income requirements are much easier to meet once UI stops. 4. Call 211 for local emergency assistance programs - some counties have special funds specifically for when unemployment runs out. The job market really is brutal right now despite what the media says. You're definitely not alone in this struggle - stay strong and explore all these options! 💪

•This is such helpful advice, thank you! I had no idea about the 599 training program or calling 211 - those sound like really promising options I need to look into immediately. You're absolutely right about not waiting to apply for other assistance too. I've been so focused on trying to figure out the unemployment extension situation that I haven't explored these other avenues. Really appreciate you sharing your experience from going through this in October - it helps to know I'm not the only one dealing with this confusing system!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this - the uncertainty when benefits are about to end is absolutely terrifying! I went through the same thing last summer and the stress was unreal. Unfortunately, everyone here is right that the 13-week PEUC extension ended permanently in September 2021. The NY DOL website is criminally outdated and still references programs that don't exist anymore - it's honestly cruel to leave that misleading info up there. A few suggestions based on my experience: 1. **Definitely** look into that 599 training program people mentioned. I wish I had known about it when I was in your shoes. If you can get approved for certain training/education, you might be able to extend benefits while learning new skills. 2. Since you had that part-time job for 6 weeks, call and ask specifically if you earned enough to file a new claim. Even if it's a long shot, it's worth checking. 3. Start your SNAP application TODAY if you haven't already. Don't wait until your last unemployment payment - the process can take a few weeks and you want it in place before you're completely without income. 4. Contact 211 for local resources. Some areas have emergency assistance specifically for when unemployment runs out. The job market is absolutely brutal right now despite the "low unemployment" headlines. Hang in there - you're definitely not alone in this struggle. Keep us posted on how things go! 💙

•Thank you so much for this incredibly thoughtful and detailed response! It really helps to hear from someone who went through this exact same situation. The stress is definitely overwhelming - I keep waking up at 3am worrying about what I'm going to do next week. You're absolutely right about how cruel it is that they leave all that outdated information on the website. I've wasted so many hours trying to decipher pages that reference programs that ended 2+ years ago! I'm definitely going to start my SNAP application today like you suggested, and I'm going to call 211 first thing tomorrow morning. The 599 training program sounds like it could be a real game-changer if I can get approved. Thanks for taking the time to lay everything out so clearly - it gives me hope that there might be some options I haven't explored yet. I'll definitely keep everyone posted on how things go! 🙏

I'm really sorry you're going through this - the stress when benefits are ending is absolutely awful! I was in almost the exact same situation a few months ago and can totally relate to the panic and confusion. Unfortunately, what everyone here is saying is correct - the 13-week PEUC extension ended permanently in September 2021 along with all the other federal pandemic programs. NY is back to just the standard 26 weeks, and the fact that their website STILL mentions those old programs is honestly infuriating and misleading. However, there are still a few options worth exploring: 1. **599 Training Program** - This is huge! If you can get approved for certain vocational training or education programs, you can potentially get extended benefits while you're in school learning new skills. Definitely worth looking into ASAP. 2. **New Claim Possibility** - Since you mentioned working part-time for 6 weeks last summer, you should definitely call and ask if you earned enough (typically 10x your weekly benefit amount across multiple weeks) to qualify for a new claim when your current one expires. 3. **Other Assistance Programs** - Start applying for SNAP benefits NOW, not after your UI ends. Also look into HEAP for utility assistance and call 211 for local emergency programs. The job market really is brutal despite what the headlines say. I applied to over 300 jobs and got maybe 8 interviews before finally landing something. You're definitely not alone in this struggle - hang in there! 💪
