Can I use my NYS Department of Labor unemployment card on Cash App for transfers?

Hey everyone, I've been getting my unemployment benefits on the KeyBank debit card from NYS Department of Labor for a few months now. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether I can link this card to Cash App to send money to friends or transfer funds? I tried adding it but I'm not sure if it went through properly. Has anyone successfully used their unemployment debit card with Cash App or similar apps? Don't want to mess anything up with my benefits.

Yes, you can definitely use your KeyBank unemployment card with Cash App! I've been doing it for months. Just add it like any other debit card in the Cash App settings. Make sure you're using the card number, not your account number. Sometimes it takes a day or two for the verification to go through.

Thanks! Did you have any issues with NYS Department of Labor questioning the transactions or anything like that?

The KeyBank debit card issued by NYS Department of Labor functions like any standard debit card, so yes, you can use it with Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, etc. Just be aware that some peer-to-peer payment apps may charge fees for instant transfers. Also keep in mind that your unemployment benefits are considered income, so any large transfers might be something to consider for tax purposes.

Wait, do we need to report Cash App transfers on our taxes? I've been sending money to my mom to help with bills...

The unemployment benefits themselves are taxable income, but sending money to family members isn't a taxable event for you. You're just moving your own money around.

I had trouble getting through to someone at NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my card restrictions. The phone lines are always busy and I kept getting disconnected. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made it so much easier to get answers about what I could and couldn't do with my benefits card.

Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my job search requirements.

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through the phone queue faster. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

Just be careful with Cash App and unemployment cards. I heard some people had their accounts frozen because the apps thought the regular deposits looked suspicious. Probably not common but worth mentioning.

That's probably more of an issue with the app's fraud detection than anything related to unemployment specifically. As long as you verify your identity properly you should be fine.

I've been using my KeyBank unemployment card with Cash App for about 3 months now with no problems at all. The setup was pretty straightforward - just added it like any regular debit card. One thing I noticed is that Cash App sometimes takes a small fee for instant transfers, so I usually just do the free standard transfer that takes 1-3 business days. Haven't had any issues with NYS Department of Labor either - they don't seem to care what you do with the money once it's on your card, as long as you're meeting your other unemployment requirements.
