Can I switch from New York Unemployment to disability for pregnancy?
Currently getting unemployment benefits but expecting a baby soon. Anyone know if its possible to switch from unemployment to disability benefits? I did this before in New Jersey but not sure how it works in New York. Need help understanding the process and if this is even possible.

You should be able to file for NY state disability when your doctor determines you cant work anymore due to pregnancy. Just make sure you stop claiming UI benefits the week you start disability. The max benefit is like $170 per week tho which is wayy less than UI 😩

Hey I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at unemployment to help with this! Used this service called claimyr.com - they dial and wait on hold, then connect you when someone picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it. Check out their video here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Make sure you get documentation from your doctor. Youll need form DB-450 filled out by your healthcare provider. You can find it on the ny.gov website

I went thru this last year! Apply for NY disability FIRST before stopping ur UI claims. Once approved then stop UI. Otherwise youll have a gap with no income trust me 💅

TDI in NY is through your employer or their insurance carrier, not thru unemployment. If you dont have coverage thru work you can get it from the state special fund but its complicated af

Look into NYS Paid Family Leave too! You might be eligible for that after the disability period ends. Its separate from disability and pays better like 67% of ur wages

Just went through this exact situation! You can definitely switch but timing is everything. I'd recommend calling the disability hotline at 855-312-8477 to get the ball rolling while you're still on UI. They'll walk you through the whole process and make sure you don't lose any benefits during the transition. Good luck with the baby! 👶
