Can I continue collecting NY unemployment benefits after moving to Maryland?

I just had to relocate to Maryland for family reasons, but I was receiving NY unemployment benefits when I lived there. I'm still looking for work and haven't found anything yet. Can I still continue to claim and receive my NY unemployment benefits while living in Maryland? Do I need to notify NY unemployment about my move? I'm worried they'll cut me off if I'm not physically in NY anymore, but I earned all those benefits while working in New York. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

That's a relief! Did you have to tell NY DOL that you moved? I'm worried about getting in trouble if I don't update my address.

You absolutely need to update your address with NYSDOL. While you CAN continue to receive NY benefits after moving to another state (since benefits are based on where you worked, not where you currently live), you MUST notify them of your address change. Log into your NY.gov account, go to your unemployment dashboard, and update your contact information. Also be aware that while claiming, you'll need to follow NY's work search requirements, not Maryland's. You should document all your work search activities carefully in case of an audit. And make sure you're available to accept work offers in your new location.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! I'll update my address right away. Just to be clear, I still need to do the NY required 3 work search activities per week even though I'm in Maryland now, right?

I had this exact situation in 2024 when I moved to Virginia but was on NY unemployment. You definitely need to update your address through your NY.gov account, but your benefits will continue. The system is set up to handle this - people move all the time. One thing that tripped me up: when I tried calling with questions about my specific situation, I couldn't get through for DAYS. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Totally worth it because the agent confirmed everything I needed to know about moving states while on benefits.

I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH THIS SITUATION FOR 2 MONTHS NOW AND IT'S A NIGHTMARE!!! I moved to Florida and updated my address like you're supposed to, but then they FROZE my account and demanded an INTERVIEW to verify my "eligibility" because of the move. Been waiting 8 WEEKS for this interview and STILL NOTHING!!! No payments, just "pending" every week. The system is BROKEN. Update your address like you have to but BE PREPARED for possible delays!!!

Oh no, that sounds awful! I really can't afford to have my payments interrupted. Did they give you any reason why they needed an interview? Did you keep certifying every week while waiting?

YES keep certifying EVERY week no matter what!!! They just said they needed to "verify continued eligibility" because of my move. So frustrating. I've called 50+ times and can never get through. If your situation is simple they might not flag you like they did me.

when i moved to georgia while on NY unemplyment they made me do extra identity verification stuff. make sure you have your ID and social security card handy. they might make you upload pics of them

I'm actually wondering about this too since I might need to move to Ohio to help my mom who's sick. Has anyone had their benefits completely stopped after moving? I'm so worried about losing my only income right now...

Your benefits shouldn't stop just because you moved. Benefits are tied to where you earned your wages, not where you currently live. However, you must update your address, continue meeting all work search requirements, and be available to accept work in your new location. If an employer offers you suitable work in your new area and you refuse, that could impact your benefits.

I just went through this in March 2025. You can 100% continue receiving your NY benefits in Maryland - I moved to North Carolina and still get mine. Here's what you need to do: 1. Update your address through your NY.gov account ASAP 2. Keep doing your 3 work search activities each week 3. Be prepared to explain your work search efforts in your new location if audited 4. Continue certifying weekly just like before I also recommend printing the certification confirmation page each week just to have documentation. Some people have had issues after moving, but many others (like me) had zero problems. The key is proper notification and continued work search.

Thank you for sharing your experience! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll definitely save all my certification confirmations just to be safe.

My cousin moved to Texas and kept getting NY benefits but she said they audited her work search activities like a month after she moved. Just keep good records!!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I just updated my address in the system and will make sure to keep detailed records of all my work search activities. Sounds like I should be fine as long as I follow all the rules and stay on top of everything. This was really helpful!!

Glad we could help! One more thing - make sure your phone number is also updated in the system. Sometimes they call for random verification, and you don't want to miss that because you have an old number listed.
