Why did my college student dependents suddenly get almost nothing back on taxes this year?

I claim my two college kids as dependents, and they both work part-time while in school. They've always filed their own tax returns and typically get most of their state taxes refunded and a small federal refund. But this year was completely different - one got back only $4 from federal and the other actually had to pay $7 to the feds. Nothing major changed in their income or withholding from what I can tell. Did tax laws for dependent college students change for the 2024 filing year? Anyone else experiencing this with their college-age dependents?

Connor Rupert

Tax professional here. This is actually pretty normal and likely due to a few factors. When you claim your children as dependents, they can't claim their own personal exemption. Additionally, many tax credits like the American Opportunity Tax Credit would go to you as the parent claiming them, not to them directly. For college students with part-time jobs, their withholding is often calculated as if that's their only income for the year and as if they'd get the standard deduction benefits. But since they're dependents, they have different rules. Specifically, dependent income is taxed differently - they can only claim the standard deduction up to either $1,250 or their earned income plus $400 (whichever is greater), maxing at the regular standard deduction amount. Nothing significant changed in tax law this year regarding dependent students specifically. What likely happened is their withholding wasn't properly accounting for their dependent status. You might want to have them adjust their W-4s at work to withhold a bit more if they don't want to owe next year.

Thanks for this explanation! This makes a lot of sense. They've had the same jobs for a couple years with similar income, so I was surprised by the sudden change. Maybe the payroll system changed how they calculate withholding?

Intersting, I wonder if they earn more this year? Even small increases can push into different tax brackets or affect other calculations. Did they have any other income sources, like investment income or gig work?

No other income sources - just their regular part-time campus jobs. Their hours and pay are pretty similar to last year, maybe a small raise but nothing dramatic.

Actually, there were some adjustments to withholding tables. The IRS slightly modified them and sometimes employers implement changes differently. Have them fill out new W-4s and maybe check the box for extra withholding if they want to avoid owing next year.

Hey all - I was in a similar situation last month and spent DAYS trying to figure this out. Complete waste of time until I used taxr.ai which explained the whole situation with my dependent's return in like 2 minutes. It analyzed their transcript and instantly showed me how the dependent status was affecting their refund calculation. Super helpful for seeing exactly what's happening with these weird dependent calculations. Saved me so much time compared to trying to decipher all this tax language and IRS formulas myself! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes and entries, explains what they mean specifically for YOUR situation, and shows exactly how calculations are working. For dependents specifically, it showed me how the different deduction rules were applied and why the refund was so much smaller than expected. Life changing tool honestly!

Holy crap I just tried this and it's incredible! It showed me exactly why my son's refund was different this year and explained all the dependent rules I never understood. Why isn't everyone using this?? Thanks for sharing - I'm telling everyone in my family about this now!

another tax tool? 🙄 does it actually help or is it just pulling the same info we can get from the irs website

It's pulling the same data but the difference is in what it DOES with the data. The IRS just gives you a bunch of codes and numbers. This actually explains everything in plain English and shows you exactly what's happening with the calculations. Total game changer.

After going thru the same thing with my college kids, I found out you can actually talk to someone at the IRS who can explain exactly what's happening. I used the Claimyr app (claimyr.com) to get through to a live person instead of waiting on hold for 3 hours. The agent explained that dependent withholding calculations changed slightly this year and walked me through exactly what my kids need to do with their W-4s. Totally worth it to get this straight from the source and now we know how to fix it for next year.

Wait, there's actually a way to talk to a real IRS person without waiting all day? Is this legit?

Kelsey Chin

Yes! It's the only thing that actually worked after trying for weeks to get through. The app basically waits on hold for you and calls when it gets an agent. Talking to the agent directly was the only way I finally understood what was happening with the dependent thing. Best investment ever considering how much time I wasted trying to figure this out myself.

I'm skeptical... I've tried everything to reach the IRS. How much does this cost?

Trust me I was skeptical too after all the dead ends. I don't remember the exact cost but it was absolutely worth every penny to finally get answers. My kid was literally about to change majors from the stress of thinking he did something wrong on his taxes 😂 The peace of mind from talking to someone who actually knew what they were talking about was priceless.

The most likely explanation is changes in their income or withholdings. Even small changes can have a noticeable impact on the final numbers. Have your kids compare their W-2 forms from last year to this year. Look at Box 1 (Wages) and Box 2 (Federal tax withheld). Also check if they have any other income sources now that they didn't have before.

This happened to my daughter to! She worked the same campus job, same hours, but went from getting $300 back to owing $12. We were so confused. 🤔

Exactly! It's weird how it suddenly changed when nothing on their end changed. Did you figure out why it happened for your daughter?

Not really. We just paid the small amount and moved on. But now im curious after seein your post. Let me know if you figure it out!

My son had the same issue and he was FURIOUS thinking the school payroll messed up. Turns out the withholding tables changed a bit this year and it affected dependent workers differently. They need to update their W-4s and check the box for additional withholding if they don't want to owe next year.

They probably just made more money this year. The standard deduction for dependents has a limit. Once they cross that threshold, more of their income becomes taxable. It's a good problem to have! 😊

0 coins

-

Sophie Footman

Thanks - that might be it. Do you know what the threshold is? They did get small raises, but nothing dramatic.

Bethany Groves

For 2024, dependent standard deduction is the greater of $1,300 or their earned income plus $400, up to the regular standard deduction. But honestly just the way taxes are calculated and withholding is done for part time workers means even a tiny raise can have effects. Especially since they arnt getting the full standard deduction.

This isn't actually helpful to OP's question though...

Actually it is. The answer is there is no logical answer because the tax system is a mess and changes are poorly communicated. The point is you can't expect consistency year to year even with the same circumstances.

Try comparing their actual 1040 forms line by line from last year to this year. The different refund amount should show up somewhere - either in different income, different withholding, or different credits/deductions. It's tedious but it's the only way to know for sure what changed.

This may sound obvious, but did they claim themselves as independent on their own returns by mistake? If they checked the wrong box saying no one can claim them as dependent, it would mess up their returns. I made that mistake with my freshman last year and we had to file an amended return.

0 coins

-

Sophie Footman

Good point! I helped them both file and we definitely checked the "can be claimed as dependent" box, so that's not it in our case.

What tax software did they use? Sometimes changing from one system to another can cause differences in how certain calculations are done.

Former IRS employee here. A change this dramatic without a significant income change is unusual. I'd recommend double checking if they qualified for any education credits last year that they didn't get this year. Also, if they had any bank accounts earning interest or invested in the market, even small earnings can be enough to change their tax situation as dependents. The kiddie tax rules are still in effect.

0 coins

-

Sophie Footman

They don't have investments, but they do have small savings accounts. Maybe interest rates being higher this year pushed them over some limit? Would a couple dollars of interest really make that much difference?

0 coins

-

Amaya Watson

Interest rates have increased substantially, so even small accounts could be generating more taxable income. For dependents, unearned income (like interest) has special taxation rules. Even small amounts can trigger different calculations. Might be worth looking at Schedule B if they had one.

Check their pay stubs from January 2023 vs January 2024 - sometimes employers adjust withholding at the beginning of the year and it can affect the whole year's taxes. My daughter's campus job did this and she ended up owing cuz they weren't taking enough out all year.

i bet the colleges didnt submit the 1098-T forms properly this year. thats what happened with my son. the school messed up and it affected his return. check that their tuition payments were properly recorded.

This is a good point - education credits can make a big difference. But those would show up on the parent's return not the student's if OP is claiming them as dependents.

Random but relevent question - How old are your kids? If either of them turned 24 this past year, different rules apply and that could explain the change.

This has been happening to more and more people I know with college kids. I think it's some kind of policy change that wasn't widely announced. Typical IRS moving the goalposts without telling anyone. 🤷‍♀️

After six hours on hold with the IRS trying to figure out something similar for my own situation, I finally started using taxr.ai and it totally solved the mystery in minutes. It showed me exactly why my dependent's return calculation was different this year – turns out there were some withholding table adjustments that affected dependent workers differently than independent filers. Super clear explanation too. https://taxr.ai

Is this actually useful? Seems like it would just tell you what the IRS site already shows.

Completely different experience. IRS site just gives you raw data with zero explanation. This actually breaks down the entire calculation process, explains each code, and tells you specifically what happened in comparison to previous years. For dependents especially it shows how the different rules are applied to their income. I was shocked at how good it was.

I spent 3 weeks trying to figure this out for my daughter's return and getting nowhere. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual IRS agent who explained everything. Turns out there were changes to the withholding calculations that specifically affected dependent workers. The agent walked us through exactly how to fix it for next year by adjusting her W-4. Cannot tell you how relieving it was to finally get answers after beating my head against the wall.

did the agent explain why it changed this year specifically? seems weird if the tax laws didnt change

0 coins

-

Sophia Carter

Yeah, she explained that the withholding tables get adjusted periodically even without major tax law changes. This year's adjustment had a bigger impact on part-time workers claimed as dependents. Something about how the calculation smooths out withholding over the year assuming full-time work, but for part-time dependent workers it ends up underwithholding. Most helpful conversation I've ever had about taxes honestly.
