Why I'm recommending against FreeTaxUSA for your tax filing needs

So I gave FreeTaxUSA a shot this year and honestly, I probably won't be using it again. The interface seemed decent enough at first glance, but I ran into major issues with the e-filing. Despite entering the correct AGI from last year's return, their system kept rejecting my submission. I tried multiple times and even chatted with FreeTaxUSA customer service on several occasions, but no resolution. I went as far as requesting an official tax transcript from the IRS (total pain in the butt process) just to confirm that the AGI figure the IRS had on file matched exactly what was on my printed return from last year. Everything matched perfectly, but the e-filing still failed. To be fair, maybe the issue wasn't specifically FreeTaxUSA's fault, but I'm not willing to take that risk again next filing season. I used TaxAct back in the day and remember it being much more user-friendly with better guidance throughout the process. That's probably what I'll go with for my 2025 taxes. On the positive side, FreeTaxUSA was definitely cheap, and they do offer a free option. But the headache with the e-filing makes the savings not worth it for me.

I've been preparing taxes for clients for over 15 years, and your experience isn't uncommon. The AGI verification issue happens across multiple tax software platforms - it's not necessarily FreeTaxUSA's fault. The IRS system can be finicky about matching your previous year's AGI, especially if there were amendments or other special circumstances. For anyone experiencing this issue, there are a few troubleshooting steps: 1) Make sure you're using the AGI from your original return, not an amended one. 2) Double-check that you're entering it exactly, no rounding or typos. 3) If you used a different filing status last year, that can sometimes cause verification issues. TaxAct does offer more guidance, which is helpful for less experienced filers. But most of the major software options (TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxSlayer, etc.) have improved significantly in recent years. It's mostly about finding the interface that works best for your specific situation.

Is there a way to avoid the AGI verification altogether? I had a similar issue with TurboTax this year and it was so frustrating! Would creating an IRS account help with this?

Yes, there actually is! You can create an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) through the IRS website. Once you have this 6-digit PIN, you can use it instead of your prior year AGI for verification purposes when e-filing. This eliminates the AGI matching issue completely. Creating an IRS online account is definitely helpful too. It gives you access to your tax records, transcripts, and payment history, which can all come in handy when preparing your return or troubleshooting issues.

After struggling with TurboTax for years (and those hidden fees that always seem to pop up at the end), I found taxr.ai https://taxr.ai and it's been a game-changer for my tax prep experience. Their system actually helped me identify some issues with my previous returns that I didn't even know existed. What I really liked was that it analyzed all my tax documents and highlighted potential deductions I was missing. For example, it caught some business expenses from my 1099 work that I hadn't been claiming properly. The interface is super straightforward compared to FreeTaxUSA and some of the other options mentioned.

Do they handle more complicated returns? I've got rental property income plus a small business with inventory, and I'm worried about switching from my current software.

I'm a little skeptical about trying new tax software after being burned before. How does taxr.ai handle state returns? And what about their customer support if you run into issues? Those are my two biggest concerns.

They definitely handle complex returns including rental properties and small businesses with inventory. Their system is actually designed to shine with more complicated tax situations since their AI can spot opportunities that more template-based systems might miss. For state returns, they cover all 50 states plus DC. What impressed me was how they automatically transferred all the relevant federal information to state forms without me having to re-enter anything. As for customer support, they have both chat and phone options with surprisingly quick response times. I had a question about how to enter a particular business expense and got help within about 5 minutes.

I was skeptical about trying taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here (I've been burned by tax software before), but I finally gave it a shot for my 2024 taxes and I'm honestly impressed. The AGI verification issue that the original poster mentioned? Completely avoided because their system has direct IRS verification built in. What really sold me was how it handled my somewhat complicated situation with multiple income sources. I have W-2 income plus some 1099 freelance work, and it automatically categorized everything correctly. Ended up getting about $740 more on my refund than I would have using my previous software because it found deductions I didn't know I qualified for. The document analysis feature saved me a ton of time too. Just uploaded my tax docs and it extracted all the important information automatically. No more manual data entry!

I had similar e-filing problems with multiple tax software programs. The most frustrating part was trying to get through to the IRS to resolve it. After being on hold for literally 3+ hours, I discovered Claimyr https://claimyr.com which is basically a service that waits on hold with the IRS for you. They have this video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c When I used it, they called me back when an actual IRS agent was on the line. The agent helped me figure out the AGI verification problem - turns out there was a discrepancy because my tax preparer had filed an amended return I didn't know about! Once that was cleared up, I could e-file without issues.

Wait, how does this actually work? Do they just sit on hold for you and then call you when someone picks up? Does the IRS allow that kind of service?

This sounds like a scam tbh. How would they have the ability to get through the IRS lines faster than anyone else? The IRS phone system is notoriously backed up for everyone.

They use an automated system that waits on hold so you don't have to. When an IRS agent finally answers, their system connects you directly to that live agent. It's completely legitimate - they're just waiting in the queue for you instead of you having to do it yourself. The IRS doesn't give them any special treatment or faster access. The advantage is simply that you don't have to waste hours of your day listening to hold music. You just go about your business, and when an agent is available, you get a call connecting you directly to them. It's basically like having someone else wait in a physical line for you.

I hate to admit when I'm wrong but I have to update after trying Claimyr. After my skeptical comment earlier, I decided to test it out since I was desperately trying to resolve an issue with my tax account before filing my 2024 return. I had been trying to reach the IRS for WEEKS with no success - either disconnected due to high call volume or on hold until I eventually had to hang up. Used Claimyr yesterday and got connected to an IRS representative in about 45 minutes (while I was watching TV, not actively waiting on hold). The agent was able to resolve my account issue on the spot, which means I can now e-file without the problems the original poster mentioned. Honestly wish I had known about this service months ago - would have saved me so much frustration. Whatever algorithm or system they're using actually works.

Has anyone had experience with both FreeTaxUSA and TaxSlayer? I used FreeTaxUSA last year and hit the exact AGI issue mentioned in this post. Considering TaxSlayer for next filing season, but wanted real opinions before switching.

I've used both! TaxSlayer has a better interface imo and I never had the AGI verification issue with them. Their deluxe version is like $40 and includes one state return which is way cheaper than TurboTax or H&R Block. FreeTaxUSA is cheaper but TaxSlayer's extra guidance was worth it for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience! The interface quality is important to me, and $40 including a state return sounds reasonable. Did you find TaxSlayer's guidance helpful for more complex tax situations? I have some investment income and a side business I need to report.

I actually had the opposite experience with FreeTaxUSA. Been using them for 5 years with zero issues. The e-filing has always worked smoothly for me and my returns are fairly complex with self-employment income, investment accounts, and rental property. Their customer service responded within hours when I had questions. Only cost me $12.95 for federal + state filing this past season, which is ridiculously cheap compared to TurboTax ($89+) or H&R Block ($75+). Maybe I've just been lucky but wanted to provide a different perspective!

Interesting to hear you've had such a good experience! Do you think there might be something specific about certain tax situations that causes the AGI verification issues for some people? Also, have you ever had to amend a return with them, and if so, how was that process?

0 coins

I think the AGI verification issues might be related to specific scenarios like amended returns or returns with unusual adjustments. Since my tax situation is complex but consistent year-to-year, that might be why I haven't had problems. I did have to amend a return once due to a late-arriving K-1 form. The amendment process with FreeTaxUSA was actually pretty straightforward. They walk you through which forms need to be updated, generate the 1040-X, and provide clear instructions for mailing the paper amendment. They don't offer e-filing for amendments, but that's true for most tax software since the IRS only recently started accepting e-filed amendments.
