Where should I mail Form 140 tax payments? Post office keeps returning them!

I'm so confused and getting a bit worried. I've been trying to send my Form 140 payments to the PO Box 7704, San Francisco 94120-7704 address that I found listed on the IRS website, but the post office has returned my envelope TWICE now! What am I doing wrong here? I double-checked the address against what's on irs.gov and it looks correct to me. Is there a different address I should be using? Has anyone else had this problem? My payment deadline is coming up and I don't want to get hit with late fees because the mail keeps bouncing back to me. What's the actual correct address where I need to send these Form 140 payments?

The address you're using looks like it could be for California state tax payments, not federal IRS payments. Form 140 is actually the Arizona state individual income tax form, not a federal IRS form. That might explain why your mail is being returned. For Arizona Form 140 payments, you should mail them to: Arizona Department of Revenue PO Box 52138 Phoenix, AZ 85072-2138 The PO Box in San Francisco you mentioned is likely for California state tax payments or a different federal form. Double-check which form you're actually filing - if it's a federal tax payment, you'd use different forms (like 1040) and different mailing addresses.

Oh my gosh, I'm an idiot! You're totally right - I meant Form 140 for Arizona, not federal. I recently moved from California to Arizona and I guess I'm still mixing things up. No wonder it kept getting returned! Thank you so much for the correct address. Do you know if there's a way to check online if my payment is past due already? I'm worried about penalties.

You can check your payment status through the Arizona Department of Revenue's website at azdor.gov. They have an online portal where you can create an account and view your filing status, payment history, and any balances due. If your payment ends up being late, call the Arizona Department of Revenue directly at 602-255-3381. Explain your situation about the address confusion. They sometimes waive penalties for reasonable cause, especially if this is your first time making this mistake. Just be prepared to explain the situation and that you were trying to pay on time.

I had a similar issue last year with my tax payments being returned. I finally found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which saved me so much stress. It has this cool feature that gives you the exact correct mailing addresses for different tax forms based on your state and situation. I uploaded a pic of my form and it immediately told me I was using the wrong address! Would have saved me so much time and worry if I'd found it earlier.

Does it work for business tax forms too? I've got a bunch of quarterly payments I need to send for my small business and I always worry I'm using the wrong addresses.

I'm a bit skeptical about these tax services. How is this different from just looking up the address on the official state tax website? Does it do anything the official site doesn't?

It absolutely works for business tax forms! I use it for my LLC's quarterly filings too, and it hasn't steered me wrong yet. It gives you all the right addresses, due dates, and even some pointers on common mistakes to avoid. The difference from official sites is the convenience and clarity. Instead of digging through confusing government websites with outdated interfaces, taxr.ai puts everything in plain language. Plus, it can actually read your specific form and tell you if you've made any errors before you send it. The official sites just post general information, they don't analyze your specific situation.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and wow, it was super helpful! I uploaded my business tax forms and not only did it confirm the right mailing addresses for each one, it also caught a calculation error I made on my estimated tax payment form that would have caused problems. Saved me from a potential audit headache! The interface was really simple to use too. Definitely keeping this tool for future tax seasons.

If you're still having trouble getting through to anyone at the Arizona tax department about your situation, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last year trying to sort out a messed up payment that got sent to the wrong address. Spent HOURS on hold with the AZ tax department with no luck. Claimyr got me a callback in like 20 minutes! You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. Was a huge time saver when I was panicking about potential penalties.

How does this actually work? Do they just keep calling for you or something? Sounds too good to be true tbh.

Yeah right. Nothing can get you through to government agencies faster. They all use the same terrible phone systems. This is probably just another service that takes your money and doesn't deliver anything you couldn't do yourself.

They use a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. Once they get a real person, they call you and connect you. It's not magic - just technology that saves you from the hold music! No, it's not just "calling for you." They have a system that can stay on hold while you go about your day. I was skeptical too until my accountant recommended it. The Arizona DOR had a 2+ hour wait time when I needed to sort out my payment issue, but I got a call back in under 25 minutes.

Ok I have to eat my words. I tried Claimyr yesterday after posting my skeptical comment. I've been trying to reach someone at the AZ tax department for THREE DAYS about a payment issue similar to the original poster's problem. Got connected in 35 minutes using their service when I had previously waited on hold for over an hour and got disconnected. The tax agent I spoke with actually fixed my issue right away once I explained the situation. I hate admitting when I'm wrong but this service actually delivered.

Just a quick tip - whenever you mail tax payments to ANY tax agency, always get a tracking number from USPS, FedEx or UPS. It costs a few bucks but gives you proof of when you sent it and when they received it. Has saved me from late payment penalties more than once when the tax office claimed they "never received" my payment. That tracking number receipt is gold when disputing penalties!

That's great advice, wish I'd thought of that earlier! Do you also recommend sending a check instead of a money order for tax payments? I've been using money orders but wondering if checks are better for tracking purposes.

I always use checks instead of money orders for tax payments because they give you an extra layer of proof. When your check clears, you have both the tracking delivery confirmation AND your bank statement showing they cashed it. With money orders, you have to go through more steps to prove it was cashed. Also, if there's ever a dispute about WHEN you paid, the date the check was cashed is clear evidence. Just make sure to write your tax ID number and the tax form number in the memo line of the check to help them process it correctly.

Has anyone had luck with paying Arizona taxes online instead of mailing payments? Their website looks confusing and I'm not sure if I need to register for something special first. Might be easier than dealing with addresses and mail.

Yes! I switched to paying online last year and it's WAY easier. Go to AZTaxes.gov and create an account. You'll need your SSN, last year's tax info, and a bank account for direct debit. Once registered, you can make payments for Form 140, estimated taxes, and even set up payment plans. They send confirmation emails for everything so you have proof of payment too.
