TurboTax typically notifies you about refund advance approval within 24 hours after you submit your return through their system - not when the IRS accepts it. The advance is based on TurboTax's assessment of your return details and likelihood of IRS approval. Check your TurboTax account messages or the email you used when filing for their decision.

So it's like getting pre-approved for a loan before the actual tax refund comes through? Does this mean they're essentially fronting you the money based on what they think the IRS will give you?

OMG thank you for explaining this!! I've been checking my email every 5 minutes waiting to hear if I'm approved. I'm literally counting on this money for my car payment due next week! 😩

The TurboTax Refund Advance program operates as a short-term loan product with specific eligibility parameters. Approval determination occurs during the post-submission processing phase but prior to IRS acceptance confirmation. Key factors in their underwriting algorithm include your refund amount, filing status, and previous tax filing history. Note that amended return status may impact eligibility as their system typically prioritizes standard returns for advance approval.

I applied for their advance last year and got approved exactly 17 hours after submission, but my friend waited 36 hours before getting his approval. Does the amended return status usually delay the decision timeline or just affect approval odds?

Back in 2022, I had an amended return and still got approved, but they only offered me about 25% of my expected refund instead of the usual 50%. The amended paperwork definitely changes how they evaluate your application.

I just went through this whole process last week! Got my advance approved like 6 hours after submitting through TurboTax - way before the IRS even looked at my return. Isn't it weird how they can decide so quickly when the IRS takes forever? The money was in my account the next morning and the IRS didn't accept my return until 3 days later.

How much of your refund did they advance? Full amount? Need to know ASAP. Bills due Monday.

I was so confused about this process too. When I couldn't figure it out, I tried calling TurboTax but was on hold for... I don't even want to say how long. Eventually I used Claimyr.com to get through to an actual person at the IRS who explained that the advance is completely separate from IRS processing. The agent confirmed my amended return was received but said TurboTax makes their own decisions about advances. Claimyr saved me hours of waiting on hold.

Have you checked your TurboTax account dashboard? There should be a specific section for the refund advance application status. Did you receive any emails from them after filing? Sometimes the approval notification goes to spam folders. What was the estimated refund amount they calculated for you?

The TurboTax advance works differently than the actual IRS refund process. Unlike H&R Block which requires IRS acceptance first, TurboTax makes their decision based on their own risk assessment immediately after you submit. For amended returns, they're more cautious since those have higher scrutiny rates from the IRS. Check your TurboTax messages section - that's where approval notifications appear first.

Just to add to what others have said - I had an amended return situation last year and TurboTax did approve me for the advance, but it took about 48 hours instead of the usual 24. They were more conservative with the amount too (only advanced about 40% of my expected refund). The key thing is that their decision is completely independent of IRS processing. Even if your return gets delayed or questioned by the IRS later, you still keep the advance money. Make sure to check both your TurboTax account dashboard AND your email (including spam) for the decision notification!
