What's the actual deadline for 1099 forms? Robinhood claiming February 18th!

I've been trying to file my taxes for the past couple weeks but I'm stuck waiting on Robinhood to send my 1099 forms. They're telling me they won't be available until February 18th! I thought the legal deadline for sending 1099s was January 31st? What's going on here? I already got my tax documents from Fidelity like three weeks ago. This is super frustrating because I was hoping to file early and get my refund sooner. Is Robinhood allowed to make me wait this long or are they breaking some rule? Can I report them or something?

The January 31st deadline only applies to certain types of 1099 forms. For investment accounts like Robinhood, different rules apply. For investment brokerages, 1099-B forms (reporting sales of stocks, options, etc.) actually have a February 15th deadline. Since February 15th falls on a weekend this tax season, the actual deadline is the next business day, which would be February 18th. So Robinhood is within the legal deadline. Some brokerages like TD Ameritrade (or Fidelity in your case) choose to send their forms earlier, but they're not required to. Robinhood is known for taking until the deadline, especially since they often have to make corrections to their initially reported information.

Thanks for explaining! I had no idea there were different deadlines for different 1099 forms. So frustrating that some companies wait until the last minute. Do you know if Robinhood ever sends them earlier than their stated date? Like maybe they're just being super cautious with that February 18th timeline?

The February 15th deadline specifically applies to 1099-B forms which report investment sales and capital gains/losses. There are actually several different types of 1099 forms with different deadlines. In my experience, Robinhood consistently waits until very close to the deadline. They often have to make corrections to initially reported information, so they tend to take the full allowed time to ensure accuracy. I wouldn't count on receiving it earlier than February 18th, unfortunately. Many investment platforms like Robinhood have complex reporting requirements, especially with cryptocurrency and options trading that might require additional verification.

I went through this exact same frustration last year waiting for Robinhood! I ended up finding this service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that actually saved me a ton of headache. It analyzes all your tax documents and explains everything in plain English. When I finally got my Robinhood 1099, it was super confusing with all the wash sales and dividend reinvestments. I uploaded it to taxr.ai and it broke everything down for me, showed me which transactions were causing issues, and even found some losses I could claim that I would've missed. Definitely worth checking out when you finally get your forms!

How exactly does this work? Do I just upload my 1099 forms there and it explains them? Does it actually file my taxes or just help me understand them better?

Sounds interesting but I'm always nervous about giving my tax docs to random websites. How secure is this? And is it able to handle complicated crypto transactions? Robinhood's crypto reporting is a mess.

You upload your tax documents and it uses AI to analyze them and explain everything in plain English. It doesn't file your taxes for you - it just helps you understand what's in your documents so you can file accurately yourself or provide better information to your accountant. It's extremely secure with bank-level encryption. All documents are encrypted and they don't store your personal information. And yes! It's actually really good with crypto. It helped me straighten out all my crypto transactions from Robinhood, which was a complete mess with all the different buy/sell dates and basis calculations.

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after waiting forever for my Robinhood documents. Holy crap it was actually super helpful! My Robinhood 1099 was 22 pages long with tons of confusing transactions, and taxr.ai broke everything down clearly. I discovered I had about $750 worth of tax losses I could claim that I would have completely missed otherwise! It also explained all those weird wash sale adjustments that Robinhood does. Definitely using this again next year even if my forms come early.

If you're frustrated with Robinhood's customer service (and who isn't), I found this service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) that helped me actually get through to a human at the IRS when I had questions about my missing 1099-Rs last year. There's a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Basically they hold your place in the IRS phone queue and call you when an agent is about to answer. Saved me literally hours of waiting on hold. I know this doesn't solve your Robinhood issue directly, but if you need to call the IRS to ask about missing forms or filing without all your documents, it's a lifesaver.

How does this actually work? Do they have some special connection to the IRS or something? I'm confused how they can hold your spot in line.

This sounds like a complete scam. There's no way some random company has special access to the IRS phone systems. They're probably just charging you to do exactly what you could do yourself for free.

They use automated technology to wait in the phone queue for you. They don't have any special access or connection to the IRS - they just do the waiting part for you. Once they're close to the front of the queue, they call you and connect you directly to the IRS agent. It's basically like having someone else sit on hold for hours so you don't have to. They're not doing anything you couldn't theoretically do yourself, but the value is in not having to keep your phone tied up for 2-3 hours waiting on hold. You just go about your day and then your phone rings when an agent is actually available to talk to you.

I need to admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I actually tried it because I was desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my missing 1098-T form. I was on hold with the IRS for TWO HOURS last week and finally gave up. With Claimyr, I submitted my request, went grocery shopping, and got a call about 1.5 hours later connecting me directly to an IRS agent. The agent confirmed that I could file without waiting for all my forms if I have reasonable knowledge of what should be on them. For anyone dealing with tax document delays like the OP, this is actually really useful.

Just FYI, you CAN actually file your taxes before you receive all your forms if you have a good estimate of what will be on them. Then you can file an amended return later if needed. I do this sometimes when I'm expecting a refund and don't want to wait. Just make sure your estimates are reasonable and you're not dramatically underpaying. You'll have to weigh whether it's worth potentially filing an amendment later.

Is there any penalty for filing an amended return? I'm in the same boat waiting for Robinhood but I have a pretty good idea what will be on my 1099-B from my own records.

There's no penalty for filing an amended return as long as you're not deliberately underreporting your income or underpaying your taxes. The key is to make a good faith estimate based on information you have available. If you track your trades carefully and have a good record of your transactions, you can usually get pretty close. Just be aware that brokerages sometimes include adjustments (like wash sales) that might not be reflected in your personal records, which could affect your final numbers.

Robinhood is the WORST with tax documents! I've used them for 3 years now and they always wait until the last possible moment. Last year they actually sent a corrected 1099 in MARCH after I had already filed! Anyone know if you can request them earlier somehow? Like is there a customer service number that actually works?

There's no way to get them earlier. Their customer service is basically non-existent for this stuff. I switched to Fidelity last year and was shocked when I got my forms in mid-January!
