What to Bring to In-Person ID Verification Appointment? DL Address Different

Hey all! Finally got my in-person ID verification appt scheduled for Wed and I'm wondering what exactly I need to bring? Been retired for a few yrs now and this is my first time dealing w/ this kind of thing. Also my DL isn't current w/ my address (still shows old place) - does that matter? TIA for any help you can provide! Just want to make sure I get this right the first time so I can get my refund processed ASAP.

According to IRS Publication 5446 (Verification of Your Identity), you'll need to bring the following documents to your in-person verification appointment: 1. Photo identification (unexpired driver's license, state ID, or passport) 2. Social Security card or ITIN letter 3. A copy of the tax return in question (if available) 4. Any IRS notices you've received related to the verification 5. Proof of current address (utility bill, bank statement, etc.) The address discrepancy on your driver's license is actually addressed in Internal Revenue Manual 21.3.1.4.7, which states that secondary proof of address may be required if primary identification doesn't match current residence. I was surprised to learn how detailed their verification protocols are!

Do you possibly know if they'll accept a digital copy of my tax return on my phone? I think I have a PDF somewhere, but I'm not sure I can get it printed before Wednesday's appointment.

Thanks for listing exactly what's needed. I printed out my last 3 utility bills dated exactly 30, 60, and 90 days ago just to be safe. Figure it's better to bring too much documentation than not enough.

The IRS verification process has become much more stringent since the pandemic. I went through this in October 2023 and they scrutinized everything. The address discrepancy triggered them to ask for my mortgage statement and two utility bills. They're particularly focused on preventing identity theft with the uptick in fraudulent returns.

The address discrepancy on your driver's license shouldn't be a major issue, but you'll definitely need supplementary documentation to verify your current address. Bring a recent utility bill, property tax statement, or official mail received at your current address within the last 60 days. The IRS verification specialist will cross-reference these documents during your appointment. Don't worry too much - this is a routine verification process they conduct for security purposes.

When I had my verification appointment last month, I was so stressed about the address issue too! I ended up calling the IRS three times trying to confirm what I needed and kept getting different answers. Finally used Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) to get through to an actual knowledgeable agent instead of waiting on hold forever. The agent confirmed exactly what I needed and I sailed through my appointment. Do you think you'll be able to get utility bills or something similar showing your current address before Wednesday?

Is using a third-party service really necessary just to talk to the IRS? Couldn't you have just waited on hold like everyone else? What makes you think the information you got was any different than what's available on the IRS website or from a regular agent?

How long did it take w/ Claimyr to get thru to someone? I've been trying the regular IRS # for days and keep getting the "high call volume" msg. My appt is in 2 days and I'm kinda freaking out about what docs I need.

The ID verification process is similar to what banks require for opening accounts - they just need to confirm you are who you say you are. Unlike passport applications where everything must match exactly, the IRS is more practical about address discrepancies. They understand people move. Just bring your driver's license plus something current with your address (bank statement, utility bill, lease). If you've received any IRS notices at your current address, definitely bring those too - that's the best proof since it shows the IRS already knows your current location.

I work in financial compliance, and this is accurate. The verification process follows a standard procedure: 1. First, they verify your primary identification (driver's license, passport) 2. Then, they confirm your taxpayer identity (Social Security card/ITIN) 3. Next, they establish current residence through secondary documentation 4. Finally, they match all information against the tax return in question The system is designed to accommodate common scenarios like address changes while still maintaining security protocols.

Great explanation. Helped me understand the process. Will bring all my documents organized and ready. Makes the whole thing less stressful.

Based on my experience with ID verification appointments last tax season, here's what you should bring: • Primary ID: Your driver's license (even with old address) • Secondary ID: Social Security card • Proof of current address: Recent utility bill, bank statement, lease agreement, or mortgage statement • Tax documents: Copy of the tax return in question • IRS correspondence: Any letters or notices related to your verification requirement • Contact information: Phone numbers and email addresses listed on your return The address discrepancy is common and easily resolved with current documentation. Would you like me to explain anything specific about what happens during the appointment itself?

I just went through this last month. Bring your DL, social security card, and a couple pieces of mail with your current address. I brought a utility bill and bank statement. The whole thing took 15 minutes. They just want to make sure you're really you. The address on my license was wrong too and it wasn't a problem at all. Such a relief to finally get it done - my refund showed up exactly 9 days after the appointment.

If you're concerned about the address discrepancy, you might consider bringing a voter registration card if you have one updated with your current address. It's often overlooked, but it's an official government document that verifies your identity and residence. Some people also find that bringing a copy of last year's tax return helps establish continuity of identity, especially if you're using the same bank account for direct deposit.
