What is Schedule 3 Nonrefundable Credits and why is TurboTax forcing me to upgrade?
I'm using TurboTax again this year (5th time using it even though I keep telling myself I won't). They advertised their FREE edition that supposedly includes both state and federal filing. So I spent almost an hour punching in all my info and clicking through screen after screen only to get hit with this message: "To accurately complete your taxes, you need to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe" When I clicked "Why do I need to upgrade?" it told me: "You have Schedule 3, Nonrefundable Credits, and that's just one of the reasons the IRS requires you to file Form 1040. TurboTax Free Edition does not cover this situation" What the heck is Schedule 3 Nonrefundable Credits?? I knew they were going to find some way to make me pay after I'd already invested all that time. What did I even enter that triggered this stupid paywall? Is TurboTax just a complete scam at this point? Has anyone else run into this and found a way around it?

The Schedule 3 is just an additional tax form that covers certain credits and payments. It includes nonrefundable credits like Foreign Tax Credit, Education Credits, Child and Dependent Care Credit, Retirement Savings Contribution Credit, and several others. What likely happened is that something you entered during your tax preparation triggered one of these credits. TurboTax's free version is quite limited and only covers very basic tax situations (essentially just W-2 income with standard deduction). Anything slightly more complex and they push you to upgrade. If you don't want to pay for TurboTax, you have other options. The IRS Free File program partners with several tax software companies to provide truly free filing if you meet certain income requirements. Also, there are alternatives like FreeTaxUSA that offer much more comprehensive free federal filing with a small fee for state filing.

•Thanks for the explanation! Do you know which specific items might have triggered the Schedule 3 requirement? I literally just have a W-2 and some minimal interest from my savings account. I think I might have entered something about contributing to my IRA, would that do it?

•Contributing to an IRA could definitely trigger Schedule 3 if you qualify for the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit (also called the Saver's Credit). This credit is available to lower and middle-income taxpayers who contribute to retirement accounts. Interest from savings accounts generally wouldn't trigger Schedule 3 by itself - that would just go on Schedule 1 for interest income. If you don't have many complex tax situations, I'd recommend trying FreeTaxUSA or one of the actual IRS Free File partners. They tend to include more forms and schedules in their free versions compared to TurboTax's commercial "free" edition.

I had a similar experience last year but found a solution with taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai). After TurboTax tried to upsell me for some obscure form, I uploaded my tax documents to taxr.ai and it instantly told me which credits I qualified for without any surprise fees. Their system actually explained that my retirement contributions qualified me for the Saver's Credit on Schedule 3, but also suggested a completely free filing alternative that would handle my situation. The best part was I didn't have to re-enter all my information - I just uploaded my W-2 and answer a few questions. Saved me both money and hours of frustration.

•Does it actually prepare and file your taxes or just analyze what you qualify for? I'm hesitant to try yet another tax service after being burned by TurboTax's "free" promotion so many times.

•I'm a bit skeptical. How does taxr.ai make money if they're just pointing you to free services? Is there some catch or do they sell your data?

•It analyzes your documents and tax situation first, then gives you options for filing. It doesn't file directly but points you to the best option for your specific situation - including truly free ones if you qualify. They have a paid tier for more complex situations, but their basic analysis is free. They don't sell your data - they're pretty transparent that they make money from the premium features for people with complex tax situations who need more help. For simple returns with just a few forms, they'll direct you to completely free options.

Tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and wow, it actually delivered. I uploaded my W-2 and last year's return, and it immediately identified that I qualified for the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit (which is what triggered Schedule 3). Then it recommended a completely free filing option through one of the IRS partners that handles this form without charging. The analysis took like 2 minutes and saved me from paying $89 to TurboTax. Will definitely use this first next year before I waste time with the TurboTax bait-and-switch again.

If you're still struggling with your return and need actual help from the IRS, I'd recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last year - TurboTax wanted to charge me extra for forms I didn't understand, and I couldn't get through to the IRS for clarification. The hold times were literally hours long. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent explained exactly which forms I needed and confirmed I could file for free through one of their official partners. Totally changed my perspective on dealing with tax questions.

•Wait, how does this actually work? Does it just call the IRS for you or what? I'm confused how they get you through faster than calling directly.

•This sounds like BS. There's no way to "skip the line" with the IRS. They're notoriously understaffed and everyone has to wait. I'm calling scam on this one.

•It doesn't call for you - it holds your place in line. Their system navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold, then calls you when an agent picks up. You're still talking directly to the IRS, they just handle the hold time for you. The reason it works is because they have automated systems that can stay on hold indefinitely while you go about your day. When an actual agent comes on the line, you get a call to connect with them. You're not skipping any lines - you're just not personally sitting there listening to hold music for hours.

I have to admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After dismissing it as a scam, I was desperate enough to try it when I discovered TurboTax wanted to charge me $119 for my supposedly "simple" return with a Schedule 3. The service actually worked exactly as described. I entered my number, their system called the IRS and navigated the prompts, then called me when an agent was on the line about 40 minutes later. The IRS agent confirmed I could file with Schedule 3 using the IRS Free File program (not TurboTax's commercial "free" version) and saved me over $100. I felt silly for being so skeptical, but after years of tax season scams, it's hard not to be.

The free version of TurboTax is extremely limited. I've used FreeTaxUSA for the last three years and have been really happy with it. Federal filing is free no matter how complex your return is, and state filing is only like $15. They don't do the bait and switch garbage that TurboTax pulls every year.

•Do they handle Schedule 3 forms with the free version? And is the interface easy to use? I'm not super tax-savvy but I can follow instructions well enough.

•Yes, they handle Schedule 3 forms in their free federal version. Their interface isn't quite as slick as TurboTax, but it's definitely user-friendly and walks you through everything step by step. The free version includes virtually all federal forms and schedules - the only things they charge extra for are audit assistance and amended returns. State filing does cost around $15, but that's still way cheaper than what TurboTax charges for their "Deluxe" tier.

This happens every year with TurboTax. I made the switch to Cash App Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax) and it's completely free for federal AND state, including most common forms like Schedule 3.

•I tried Cash App Taxes this year but it kept glitching on me when I tried to enter my student loan interest deduction. Did you have any technical issues with it?
