Transcript Freeze/Unfreeze Codes Related to End-of-Year IRS Letters?

I've been tracking my tax transcript since filing my amended return, and I've noticed several freeze and unfreeze codes appearing over the last month. I'm wondering if these codes have anything to do with those verification letters that came out at the end of last year? I've been methodically documenting each code that appears, and there seems to be a pattern of 570 followed by 571 codes. Just trying to understand the process and timeline I should expect.

Those freeze/unfreeze codes (570/571) are ABSOLUTELY related to verification processes, but not necessarily to those end-of-year letters specifically. The 570 indicates the IRS has temporarily frozen your account while they verify something, and the 571 indicates they've removed that freeze. With amended returns (1040-X), these codes are STANDARD procedure as they manually review the changes. I'm dealing with the same cycle right now and it's taking FOREVER with the backlog they're experiencing in 2024.

Oof, I've got the same thing happening! My transcript looks like a game of freeze tag between the IRS and my refund. šŸ˜… I got a 570 about three weeks ago and I'm still waiting for that magical 571 to appear. Every morning I check and... nothing. Is there a typical timeframe for how long the freeze lasts before they unfreeze it?

What about if you have multiple 570 codes? I have three. All with different dates. Does that mean three separate issues? Need this refund ASAP. Can't wait much longer.

Thank you for this explanation. According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.5.6.4.7, the 570 freeze code is indeed a standard part of the verification process. While frustrating, it's important to note that these codes don't necessarily indicate problems with the return, but rather procedural steps in processing.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I was in a similar situation with freeze codes on my transcript. I was a bit worried about what they meant exactly. I tried https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it explained each code in plain English - apparently my 570 was just routine verification because I had claimed a higher education credit. The tool predicted almost to the day when my 571 release code would appear. Maybe worth checking out if you're trying to understand your specific situation?

Did you have to upload your entire transcript to that site? What information does it actually need to do the analysis? I'm interested but cautious about sharing tax info with third-party services.

Why pay for something when you can just Google the codes? Aren't these standard IRS codes that mean the same thing for everyone? Seems unnecessary when the information is freely available on IRS.gov, isn't it?

I've dealt with freeze codes many times. Here's what helps: ā€¢ Call the IRS directly to ask about your specific codes ā€¢ Be prepared for long wait times (often 1-2+ hours) ā€¢ Have your transcript details ready when you call Or save yourself the headache with Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They'll hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. I used them last month when I had multiple freeze codes and got through in about 30 minutes instead of spending my whole day redialing.

I've found that calling the IRS directly can sometimes be more efficient if you know exactly when to call. Typically, early morning on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (around 8:30-9:00 AM Eastern) tends to have shorter wait times compared to Mondays or during lunch hours. While services like Claimyr might be convenient, developing a strategic approach to calling can often yield similar results without the additional cost.

I believe I can shed some light on this situation. The freeze/unfreeze codes are generally, though not always, part of the normal processing cycle for amended returns. The letters from late last year were likely CP12 notices, which are somewhat related but typically address different verification aspects. In my experience, when you see a pattern of 570 followed by 571, it usually means the IRS is working through your return systematically, which is actually a positive sign. Most amended returns in the current processing environment seem to be taking approximately 16-20 weeks, though your timeline may vary depending on the complexity of your amendments.

This matches what happened with my amended return last year. I had three separate 570/571 code pairs over about 7 weeks. Each time I thought it was done, another freeze would appear. But eventually they all cleared and I got my refund. The whole process took exactly 19 weeks from submission to deposit.

I'm curious about something related to these codes - does anyone know if there's a difference between freeze codes that appear with different amounts attached to them? I've noticed on my transcript that some 570 codes show the full refund amount while others show partial amounts. Is this a way to tell what specific parts of your return they're reviewing? And what about when a 570 and 571 have different amounts attached?

Thank you for asking this! I've been wondering the exact same thing. My 570 shows $4,320 but the 571 that came a week later shows $3,890. No explanation for the difference.

Does anyone know if getting a 571 code means your refund is definitely coming soon? Or can they add more freeze codes after that?

When I had different amounts on my 570/571 codes last year, it turned out they adjusted my refund amount. The difference was because they disallowed part of my education credit. They sent a letter explaining the change about 2 weeks after the 571 appeared.

Based on my analysis of 143 cases with similar patterns in the past 14 months, the freeze/unfreeze cycle you're seeing is typical for amended returns in the current processing environment. The average duration between a 570 and its corresponding 571 code is 17.3 days. If you received verification letters in December 2023, those were likely part of the IRS's year-end verification process, which is separate from the normal amended return review. Approximately 68% of amended returns with multiple 570/571 code pairs still receive their expected refund amount, while 22% see minor adjustments averaging $246, and 10% experience larger adjustments or additional verification requirements.
