TPG Showing Refund Under Review - What Can I Do?

I'm freaking out right now!!! šŸ˜« I filed through TaxPayer Group and just checked my status - it says my refund is under review. I'm so worried because I planned everything out to use this money for my mom's medical supplies this month. Has anyone else filed with TPG and seen this message? I'm really anxious about this and don't know what to do. Is there anything I can do to speed things up or at least find out why it's being reviewed? šŸ’”

Hey there! This is actually pretty common w/ TPG right now. They're a refund transfer service (aka refund anticipation check) and they have internal review processes that are separate from the IRS. Basically what's happening is: - Your return was accepted by IRS āœ“ - IRS is processing or has already sent $$ to TPG āœ“ - TPG is doing their own review before releasing funds to you TPG reviews can take 24-72 hrs typically. They're just verifying everything matches up before they take their fee and send you the rest. Not much you can do to speed it up except call their customer service line, but tbh they'll prob just tell you to wait.

Is this just a TPG thing or do other tax prep services do this too? Seems a bit sketchy that they're holding onto people's money when they already paid for the service... šŸ¤”

I had the EXACT same issue last month! So frustrating! ā€¢ TPG held my refund for 5 days "under review" ā€¢ Called their customer service 3 times with no help ā€¢ Finally uploaded my tax transcript to https://taxr.ai ā€¢ It showed my refund was actually released by IRS already ā€¢ Used that info to push TPG to release my funds The transcript analysis showed exactly when IRS sent the money to TPG. They were just sitting on it! Having the exact dates and codes from my transcript was the only thing that got them to move faster.

Did you have to pay for that service? And how exactly did it help you push TPG? Did you just call them with the information or was there something specific you had to say?

I think I had something similar happen last year with TPG. It was probably just their standard verification process, but it felt like forever waiting for my money. The review lasted about 3 days, if I remember correctly, and then the funds were suddenly in my account without any notification. It seems like they might be doing more intensive reviews this year, possibly due to increased fraud concerns or something like that.

TPG is a third-party processor. They aren't the IRS. They take your refund from IRS first. They deduct their fees. Then send remainder to you. Reviews happen when something flags in their system. Could be name mismatch. Could be amount discrepancy. Could be random selection. Call their direct customer service line. Ask for specific reason for review. Request escalation if needed.

This is really helpful! Do you know what the best way is to contact them? I tried looking up their customer service number but found several different ones. Is there a specific department I should ask for when calling about a review?

Aren't these refund transfer services just a way for them to make extra money off people who can't afford to pay upfront for tax prep? I used TPG last year because I needed my refund ASAP for car repairs, and they held my money for 4 days during their "review" too. When I finally got someone on the phone, they couldn't even tell me what they were reviewing!

Tax professional here. TPG reviews are typically triggered by one of three scenarios: discrepancies between the approved IRS refund amount and what was expected based on the return, identity verification requirements due to security protocols, or banking information validation. In most cases, the review completes within 72 hours without requiring customer intervention. The process is largely automated.

I went through this exact nightmare last tax season! TPG had my refund "under review" for almost a week with no explanation. I called their customer service number every day and just got the runaround. Finally I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an actual IRS agent who confirmed my refund had been sent to TPG days earlier. Once I had that confirmation from the IRS and called TPG back with that info, magically my review was "completed" the next day. Sometimes you need to show them you've verified with the IRS directly.

Important clarification: TPG (Taxpayer Group or Tax Products Group) is a Refund Transfer service provider. They're not reviewing your actual tax return - the IRS already completed that process. TPG is conducting a verification of the disbursement details before releasing funds to your designated account. This is standard protocol for all RT providers in accordance with FinCEN regulations. The review timeframe is typically 1-5 business days depending on volume and complexity of verification requirements.
