Student Loan Offsets for 2024 Tax Refunds - Is This Happening?

I'm in another tax group and someone said her student loans would be taken out of her taxes. Is this true? I thought they suspended the student loan thing for a while longer Maybe that's why I haven't gotten my sh** yet 🤣

Student loan offsets actually resumed for the 2024 tax season (2023 tax returns). The COVID-era suspension of federal student loan offsets ended in September 2023 when payments restarted. If you have defaulted federal student loans, the Department of Education can now request the Treasury Offset Program to intercept your tax refund.

I found this out the hard way. Got a notice about 2 weeks ago that $1,842 of my refund was being taken for old student loans I thought were still in the COVID forbearance. Apparently they tried to contact me at an old address. Check your studentaid.gov account to see your current status.

Omg that's terrible! I'm gonna check mine right now. I haven't gotten any notices but my refund is taking forever.

If you're worried about an offset, you can check by calling the Treasury Offset Program at 1-800-304-3107. You'll need your SSN, and it'll tell you if there are any pending offsets. If you're having trouble getting through their phone system, I'd recommend Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com). They can get you connected to an agent quickly so you can find out if there's an offset on your account. Saved me hours of frustration when I was dealing with this exact issue last month.

Not all student loans qualify for offset. Only federal loans that are in DEFAULT status can be offset. If your loans are current or in an income-driven repayment plan, they can't take your refund. Also, if you filed jointly with a spouse, they might be able to claim injured spouse relief (Form 8379).

I was confused about this too and couldn't make sense of my tax transcript when it finally updated. I used taxr.ai to analyze it and it immediately identified the offset code and explained exactly what was happening. It also showed me which part of my refund was being taken and which part I'd still receive. Super helpful for understanding all the confusing codes and dates.

Is that website legit? I'm always nervous about putting my tax info into random sites.

It doesn't ask for any personal info like SSN or anything. You just upload your transcript PDF or screenshot and it analyzes the codes. It's been recommended a lot in this sub. Helped me understand exactly why my refund amount changed without having to decipher all the IRS jargon myself.

If your refund is delayed but you haven't received an offset notice, it might just be normal processing delays. The IRS is still working through a backlog. My refund took 6 weeks this year with no offset involved.
