State and federal refunds operate on completely independent timelines. State refunds typically process faster because they handle a smaller volume of returns. Federal refunds are currently averaging 21 days for error-free e-filed returns, but can take longer during peak season (which we're in now). Have you checked your federal refund status on the IRS Where's My Refund tool or accessed your transcript?

I just went through this last week! Got my NY refund on Thursday and my federal showed up Tuesday morning. Seems like there's often about a 3-5 day gap between them for a lot of people this season. Have you checked your transcript to see if there's any processing codes?

I tried checking WMR but it just says "still processing" with no bars. Haven't figured out how to get my transcript yet. Is that something I can check online?

Yeah, you can get your transcript at irs.gov/transcripts. You'll need to create an ID.me account if you don't already have one. The transcript will show processing codes that tell you exactly where your return is in the system. Much more detailed than WMR!

When did you file? That's the most important factor. We're still in the middle of tax season and IRS is slammed right now. Also, did you claim any credits like Earned Income or Child Tax Credit? Those automatically get additional review time.

Filed on March 15th. No special credits, pretty simple return actually. Just anxious because I was counting on that money for some car repairs!

That's only about 3 weeks ago, and we're in peak season. I'd say give it another week before getting concerned. The fact that your state came through is a good sign that everything was filed correctly.

I've been using https://taxr.ai to track my refund status this year. It analyzes your transcript and explains all the codes in plain English. Helped me understand why my refund was taking longer (had a 570 hold code I didn't understand). Might be worth checking out if you want more insight than the basic WMR tool gives you.

Does it actually tell you anything more than what's already on your transcript? I'm always skeptical of these services.

It doesn't add new information, but it translates all the IRS jargon and codes into plain language. Also gives you predictions about when you'll likely see movement based on your specific codes. Saved me hours of Googling random transcript codes and trying to figure out what they meant for MY specific situation.

If it's been more than 21 days since you filed, you can actually call the IRS to check on status. I was in the same boat last month - state came through but federal was stuck. After trying to call for days and getting the "high call volume" message, I used Claimyr.com (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an agent. They confirmed there was a minor verification issue they fixed on the spot, and my refund showed up a week later.

Thanks for the tip! It hasn't been quite 21 days yet, but if it gets to that point I'll definitely try this. Did you have to pay for the service?

Yes, there is a fee, but considering I spent hours trying to get through on my own with no luck, it was worth it to me. They don't charge if they can't get you connected to an agent. I was connected in about 15 minutes after days of trying on my own.

The timing varies a lot, honestly. Last year my state (CA) came a full month before federal. This year they were only 4 days apart. The IRS is actually moving pretty quickly for most straightforward returns this season compared to the last few years. If you don't have any special credits or deductions, you'll probably see it within a week or so of your state refund.
