Self-filing taxes vs hiring a tax professional for family with ITIN needs
I'm planning to file taxes jointly with my spouse for the second time ever. We have children, and while one has a SSN, we need to get an ITIN for our other child (totally missed this requirement last year). Last year we qualified for free filing, but our income increased this year so we no longer qualify for those free services. As complete beginners, I'm wondering: How challenging would it be to handle our taxes ourselves? We're really nervous about making errors. Would tax software be sufficient, or should we consider getting help from a tax professional? We don't have any side income and are living here on work visas.

Tax software makes self-filing pretty manageable for most families, even with your ITIN situation. Most major tax programs (TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct) have guided interviews that walk you through everything step by step, including the process for getting an ITIN for your child. The fact that you're on work visas with standard income (assuming W-2 employment) actually makes things more straightforward than if you had complex investments or freelance income. The software will guide you through any special considerations for non-citizens. For the ITIN application, you'll need Form W-7 along with supporting documentation. The tax software will help you prepare this, and you'll submit it with your return. Just be aware that processing times for ITINs can be lengthy.

•Do you know if they would need to mail their tax return if they're applying for an ITIN? I thought electronic filing wasn't available when submitting W-7 forms.

•Yes, you're absolutely right about that restriction. When applying for an ITIN with Form W-7, you must submit a paper return along with the ITIN application and supporting documents. You cannot e-file when applying for a new ITIN. The good news is that the tax software still helps prepare everything - it just prints out the forms instead of submitting electronically. You'll need to mail the complete package to the IRS address specified in the W-7 instructions.

After struggling with a similar situation last year (joint filing with one child needing an ITIN), I found https://taxr.ai incredibly helpful. I was overwhelmed trying to figure out how to handle the ITIN application correctly while also making sure our work visa status was properly documented. Their document analysis helped me understand exactly what I needed for the W-7 form and which supporting documents would be accepted. It basically confirmed that I had everything correct before submitting. The peace of mind was worth it since ITIN applications can get rejected for simple documentation errors.

•Does it actually explain the process step by step? I'm in a similar situation but worried about messing up the paperwork. Are there any specific visa-related issues it helps with?

•I'm curious - did it help with figuring out which tax credits you qualify for with kids? We have one with SSN and one without, and I'm confused about who we can claim for Child Tax Credit.

•It walks through the entire process with clear explanations for each document you need to submit. For visas, it confirms which forms and schedules you need based on your specific visa type and helps avoid common mistakes that could trigger unnecessary review. For tax credits, it definitely clarified the Child Tax Credit requirements. It explained that children with SSNs qualify for the full credit, while those with ITINs don't qualify for the refundable portion but may qualify for the non-refundable portion depending on your situation. It broke down exactly what we could claim for each child.

I just wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai after I asked about it here. I ended up using it last week, and I'm really glad I did! It analyzed our documents and clearly explained which tax credits we could claim for our child with an SSN versus the one needing an ITIN. It also highlighted a visa-related deduction I would have completely missed. The document review caught that I was about to submit the wrong proof of identity for the ITIN application. Apparently the copy of my child's passport needed additional certification that I wasn't aware of. Definitely saved me from having the application rejected and delaying everything by months.

For anyone dealing with ITIN issues or tax questions while on work visas, I highly recommend using https://claimyr.com to get through to the IRS directly. I spent weeks trying to reach someone about my family's ITIN application last year and kept hitting dead ends with the automated system. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes when I'd previously given up after hours on hold. The agent walked me through exactly what documents were acceptable for the ITIN application and explained some visa-specific considerations for our situation. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•How does this actually work? Sounds too good to be true considering how impossible it is to reach the IRS by phone.

•Yeah right. No way this actually works. I've literally tried calling the IRS for WEEKS about my ITIN application. If this actually worked, everyone would be using it instead of suffering through the hold times.

•It uses a system that continuously redials and navigates the IRS phone tree for you. When it finally gets through to an agent, it calls your phone and connects you. You don't have to sit there listening to hold music for hours - you just get a call when an agent is actually on the line. The reason everyone isn't using it is simply because many people don't know about it yet. It's relatively new but has been featured in several news outlets. I was skeptical too until I tried it and got through to discuss my ITIN questions after months of frustration.

I need to apologize for my skepticism about Claimyr. After spending another frustrating morning trying to reach the IRS about my pending ITIN application, I decided to try it as a last resort. I honestly couldn't believe it when my phone rang 25 minutes later with an actual IRS agent on the line! The agent clarified that my ITIN application was on hold because I had submitted the wrong type of documentation proof (I sent a notarized copy when they needed the original or a certified copy from the issuing agency). Would have never figured this out without speaking to someone directly. Saved me months of waiting only to get rejected. Still can't believe I actually got through to a human at the IRS.

If your tax situation is fairly straightforward (just W-2 income, standard filing status, etc.), even with the ITIN application, I'd say try filing yourself with software first. Most software options cost between $50-100 for your situation, while a tax professional will likely charge $250-400 minimum for a return with an ITIN application. One important thing to note: Even with an ITIN, there are limitations on certain tax credits. For example, children with ITINs don't qualify for the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit. The software should explain this, but it's good to be aware.

•Thanks for this guidance. Do you happen to know which tax software handles ITIN applications most efficiently? And approximately how long should we expect for the ITIN processing?

•All the major tax software programs (TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxSlayer) can handle ITIN applications equally well. They each have guided interviews that walk you through the W-7 form and explain what supporting documents you need. As for processing time, unfortunately, it's quite lengthy right now. Initial ITIN applications are taking about 7-11 weeks according to the IRS, but in practice, it can sometimes take 3-4 months, especially during peak tax season. The good news is that you can still file your return while the ITIN application is processing - you just won't receive certain credits until the ITIN is issued.

One important thing to consider with work visas - make sure your tax software supports your specific visa type. Some of the free options don't handle all visa scenarios correctly. I'm on an H1B and had issues with one of the free services last year misinterpreting my residency status for tax purposes.

•This is so true! I used TaxAct last year on an L1 visa and it asked the right questions to determine I was a resident alien for tax purposes based on the substantial presence test. Made a huge difference in available deductions.
