Netspend Direct Deposit Filed 2/26 - Longest Wait Ever This Year

I've been filing taxes for years and using Netspend for direct deposit, but this tax season is completely different. I've NEVER waited this long for my refund! Filed on 2/26 with no fees taken out and usually by now I'd have my money. Last year I had it within 10 days, year before that was 8 days. Now it's been over 3 weeks and nothing! Anyone else experiencing crazy delays with Netspend this year? I double-checked all my info before submitting so I know everything is accurate. Just wondering if it's something specific with Netspend or if the IRS is moving at a snail's pace for everyone.

This is definitely an IRS-wide processing delay, not specific to Netspend. The IRS has implemented enhanced fraud detection protocols for TY2023 returns, particularly for returns with Earned Income Credit (EIC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) claims. The System Integrity Verification Process (SIVP) is taking 21-35 days instead of the typical 7-14 day window. Your 2/26 filing date puts you right in the middle of peak season congestion.

Can confirm this 100%. Filed 2/22 and just got my DD yesterday. Last yr got it in like 8 days. IRS is def moving slower for everyone IMO. WMR tool was stuck on 'processing' forever too.

To add technical context to this discussion: The IRS's Return Review Program (RRP) and Dependent Database (DDb) are conducting more thorough cross-verification this year. This includes enhanced verification against Form W-2 data, which wasn't fully uploaded to IRS systems until mid-February. These verification processes create what's called a 'pipeline delay' that affects all returns regardless of preparer or financial institution.

I understand your frustration with the delay. Here's what you can do to get more clarity: 1. First, check your tax transcript on the IRS website to see if there are any processing codes 2. Look for codes like 570, 971, or 846 which indicate different stages 3. If you see code 846, that means your refund has been scheduled 4. If you're seeing other codes or can't interpret what they mean, I'd recommend using https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript I've found this tool extremely helpful because it breaks down all those confusing transcript codes and tells you exactly what's happening with your return. It can even estimate your refund date based on the codes present.

Is this service really worth using when the IRS provides all this information for free? Wouldn't most people be able to just Google what the codes mean without paying for another service?

It's like having a tax pro look over your shoulder, but for way less money. I was stuck in verification for weeks last year, and the IRS website was about as helpful as a chocolate teapot. Taxr.ai showed me exactly what was happening - like seeing the forest instead of just staring at trees. Saved me hours of stress and confusion trying to decipher what those codes actually meant for MY specific situation.

I checked my transcript this morning and it might possibly be showing some movement. There's what appears to be a 570 code dated 3/25/2024, which I think might mean they're reviewing something? I'm still not seeing a deposit date though. I'm wondering if I should be concerned about this delay or if it's probably just normal processing. It seems like maybe everyone is experiencing these longer wait times this year.

I was in the exact same boat. Filed 2/20, nothing for weeks. Called the IRS regular number like 30 times and couldn't get through. Tried Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got an actual IRS agent on the phone in 25 minutes. Found out my return was just in normal processing but had been flagged for a random review. Nothing wrong, just bad luck. Agent said to expect deposit within 2 weeks. Worth the fee to stop the anxiety and get real answers.

Did you really have to pay just to talk to someone at the IRS? That seems kind of unfair that we have to pay extra just to find out where our money is... did they actually tell you something useful or just the standard "keep waiting" response?

Thank you for sharing this! I spent 3 hours on hold yesterday before getting disconnected. At this point, I'd pay just about anything to not have to listen to that hold music again. Might give this a try if my transcript doesn't update by Friday.

Have you received any letters from the IRS? Sometimes they send notices requesting more information. Did you claim any credits? Those can delay processing. Are you checking WMR or just Netspend?

Based on what I've seen across multiple tax seasons, we're definitely experiencing longer processing times this year. In 2019, I received my refund in 6 days. In 2020, it took 9 days. Last year was about 12 days. This year, I filed on 2/15 and didn't receive my refund until 3/12 - nearly a month! The IRS is clearly struggling with volume and enhanced verification. If you don't see movement by the 30-day mark, that's when I'd start being more proactive about contacting them directly.
