My Experience Using IRS Direct File For Federal Taxes Only - What Happened?
So this is my first time doing my own taxes without any help, and I decided to try out the new IRS Direct File system everyone's been talking about. The process seemed pretty straightforward until I finished filing - turns out it only submitted my federal return and not my state taxes at all! I ended up having to go to TurboTax to file my state taxes separately which was annoying and cost me extra money I wasn't planning to spend. Has anyone else had this issue with Direct File? Is this normal or did I miss something obvious during the filing process? I'm wondering if this is how the system is supposed to work or if I stumbled on some weird bug. Really wishing I had known this before I started!

This isn't a bug - it's actually how Direct File is designed to work right now. The IRS Direct File program is currently only for federal tax returns, not state returns. This is mentioned on their website, but it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Some states have their own free filing programs you could have used instead of paying for TurboTax. For example, several states offer what's called "state direct file" systems similar to the federal one. Others have partnerships with tax software providers that let certain taxpayers file for free. For next year, make sure to check your state's tax department website first to see what free options are available before paying for a service.

•Wait really? I had no idea it was designed that way - I must have completely missed that info. So everyone using Direct File has to file state taxes separately? That seems really inefficient. Do you know which states have their own free filing options? I'm in Colorado if that helps.

•Yes, everyone using Direct File currently needs to handle state taxes separately - this is the first year of the program so it's still limited in scope. The IRS is focusing on getting the federal side working well before potentially expanding. Colorado actually does have a free filing option called "Revenue Online" through the Colorado Department of Revenue. You could have used that instead of paying for TurboTax. For 2025 taxes, just go to Colorado's tax website and look for their free filing portal. Most states have something similar, though the specifics vary by state.

I had the exact same issue last month and was super confused at first! After researching a bit, I found this amazing service called https://taxr.ai that helped me understand exactly what was happening with my Direct File submission and guided me through the state filing process too. I uploaded my federal confirmation and the system instantly analyzed it, confirming that Direct File is federal-only and showing me my state filing options. It explained everything in simple terms and even helped me find my state's free filing portal so I didn't have to pay extra.

•Does this taxr.ai thing actually check if you made mistakes on your federal return before you file your state taxes? I already submitted my federal through Direct File but I'm worried I might have screwed something up.

•I'm a little skeptical about using yet another tax service. How exactly does it work with Direct File? Does it just give you info or does it actually help you file the state return too?

•It does check for potential issues on your federal return before you proceed with state filing. The system reviews your Direct File confirmation and can spot common errors or inconsistencies that might cause problems later. This is super helpful because it can identify issues before they turn into bigger problems with your state return. The service doesn't actually file your state taxes for you - it analyzes your situation and points you to the right resources for your specific state. In my case, it found my state's free filing portal and guided me through what information I'd need to transfer over from my federal return. It was like having a tax expert walk me through the process without having to pay for one.

Following up on my skepticism about taxr.ai - I actually tried it this weekend and I'm really impressed! Uploaded my Direct File confirmation and it immediately identified that I had missed reporting some interest income on my federal return that would have caused problems with my state filing. The system helped me understand how to file an amendment for the federal return first, then guided me to my state's free filing program with specific instructions. Saved me from potentially dealing with notices from both the IRS and state tax department. Definitely worth using if you've used Direct File!

If you're having trouble reaching the IRS to ask questions about Direct File or need help figuring out what to do about your state return, I highly recommend using https://claimyr.com to get through to an actual person at the IRS. I spent HOURS trying to call them directly with no luck. With Claimyr, I got through to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes who confirmed that Direct File is federal-only and helped me understand exactly what I needed to do next. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was planning to wait on hold for hours but this saved me so much time and frustration.

•How does this service even work? I don't get it. Are they somehow magically letting you cut the line for IRS phone support? Sounds sketchy.

•Yeah right, no way this actually works. I've tried calling the IRS like 10 times this month and never get through. If this really worked everyone would be using it. Sounds like you're just promoting something.

•It's actually not about cutting the line - the service uses an automated system to dial repeatedly and hold your place in the queue. Basically it does the waiting for you and then calls you when it reaches an actual IRS agent. It's completely legitimate and works with the IRS's existing phone system. I was skeptical too before trying it. The way it works is they use technology to handle the tedious redial and wait process that most of us don't have time for. The IRS is severely understaffed, so their phone lines are always jammed. This service just handles the frustrating part of getting through the initial queue.

I have to eat my words about Claimyr. After commenting here I was still struggling with my Direct File state tax situation and getting desperate, so I tried it yesterday. I honestly expected it to be a scam but I got connected to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes! The agent confirmed everything about Direct File being federal-only but also told me I might qualify for my state's free file program based on my income. She even stayed on the line while I pulled up my state's website to make sure I was looking at the right information. Would have NEVER gotten that help without being able to talk to a real person.

Direct File is still in its pilot phase for 2025 filings. The IRS is planning to expand it to include state returns in future years, but they started with just federal to work out the kinks. This is actually pretty clearly stated during the signup process, but a lot of people miss it. You're definitely not alone in being confused! Several of my friends had the same issue. For what it's worth, I think the IRS should make this limitation MUCH more obvious during the filing process.

•Do we know which states will be included when they eventually expand? I'm in Texas so we don't have state income tax anyway, but curious about the rollout plans.

•The IRS hasn't announced specific states that will be included in future Direct File expansions. The rollout will likely depend on which states are willing to partner with the federal system, so it will vary. For Texas residents like yourself, you're actually in a good position since you don't have state income tax to worry about. Direct File is already a complete solution for you. The taxpayers who have to deal with this two-step process are those in the 41 states plus DC that have income tax filing requirements.

Check your state's tax website! Most states (like 22 of them I think) have their own free filing portal separate from the IRS. I used Direct File for federal and then my state's portal for state taxes and paid $0 total. Took a little longer having to enter info twice but saved me like $50 compared to TurboTax.

•Thanks for the tip! I wish I'd known this before paying for TurboTax. Will definitely check Colorado's website for next year. Did you have to re-enter all your information or was there a way to import data from your federal return?
