Filed taxes with FreeTaxUSA but IRS says return not processed - no amount owed showing & bank shows no payment transaction

I'm freaking out a bit because I filed through FreeTaxUSA last Friday (April 8th) and now I'm worried something went wrong, even though I got confirmation texts and emails from them saying the IRS accepted my return that same night. Today I checked my bank account and don't see any transaction for the state taxes I was supposed to pay through them. What's even more concerning is that I still need to pay my federal taxes, so I went to the IRS website to make the payment directly, but it's saying my tax return hasn't been processed yet (mentions it can take up to 21 days) and shows I have no amount owed! This is my first time doing taxes by myself, and I seriously regret waiting until the last week before the deadline. I don't want to get in trouble with the IRS or state tax department... can anyone help me understand what's happening? Is this normal or did something get messed up with my filing?

Don't panic yet! This is actually pretty normal, especially during the busy tax season. When the IRS says they "accepted" your return, it just means they received it - not that they've fully processed it. The processing can indeed take up to 21 days as the IRS mentioned. During this time, your "amount owed" won't show up in their system yet. As for the state payment, if you paid through FreeTaxUSA, it might take a few business days for that transaction to appear in your bank account. Here's what I'd recommend: First, log back into your FreeTaxUSA account and verify your payment details for both federal and state. You should see confirmation numbers for both. Second, save copies of all confirmation emails as proof that you filed on time. Third, if you're concerned about missing the payment deadline for federal taxes, you can still make an estimated payment through the IRS Direct Pay system - just be sure to select the correct tax year and payment type.

But if the IRS already accepted the return (even if not processed), shouldn't the amount owed still show in their system? I'm confused because when I filed through TurboTax last year, I could see my balance owed right away on the IRS site even before it was fully processed. Also, how long should they wait before contacting FreeTaxUSA? If the state payment doesn't show up in a few days, is that concerning?

The acceptance and processing work differently. The initial acceptance is just an automated check that the return contains valid information (correct SSN, name matches their records, etc.). It doesn't load your tax liability into their payment systems yet - that happens during the full processing. Different tax software companies handle payments differently. Some initiate the transaction immediately, while others might batch process them. I'd give it at least 3-5 business days before contacting FreeTaxUSA about the state payment. If by Friday you still don't see the transaction in your bank account, reach out to their customer service with your confirmation details. In the meantime, screenshot or save any payment confirmations from your FreeTaxUSA account as proof of your filing date and payment authorization.

I was in a similar situation last year and discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) after freaking out about my filing status. I had used a different tax software but also had issues tracking my payments and understanding what was happening with my return. The tool helped me track exactly where my return was in the IRS system and gave me peace of mind. What I found most helpful was that it explained each step of the processing timeline in plain English and told me exactly when I should expect to see the payment post to my bank account. It also confirmed that my return was actually in the system even when the IRS website wasn't showing it yet.

How exactly does taxr.ai work? Does it have some special access to IRS systems that regular people don't have? I'm always skeptical of third-party services claiming to know more than the official government website.

I've never heard of this service before. Can it really tell you more than the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website? Also, does it cost money to use? Seems like something that should be free information.

The service works by analyzing the specific codes and status messages in your tax transcripts that most people don't know how to interpret. It's not that it has special access, but rather it knows how to decode the information that's already available to you. It definitely provides more detailed information than the "Where's My Refund" tool, which is very basic. The refund tool only shows three statuses, while your actual tax transcript contains dozens of transaction codes that indicate exactly what's happening with your return. I found it especially helpful for understanding why there were delays and when exactly my payments would process.

I was honestly skeptical about taxr.ai at first (as you can see from my question above), but after trying it out of desperation when my refund was delayed for weeks, I'm now a believer. I uploaded my tax transcript and it immediately showed me that my return was flagged for a simple verification - something the IRS website never explicitly told me. The timeline feature predicted exactly when my state payment would process (which was about 4 days after filing) and when my federal refund would arrive. Both predictions were spot-on. It saved me hours of stress and a pointless call to the IRS. If you're in tax limbo like the original poster, it's definitely worth checking out.

If you're really worried and want to speak with someone at the IRS directly (which I'd recommend if things don't resolve in a week), good luck getting through their phone lines! I spent literally HOURS on hold trying to figure out a similar issue last year. Then I found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me through to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes instead of the 2+ hour wait I was expecting. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c It was such a relief to actually speak with someone who could confirm my payment was in their system even though it wasn't showing up online yet. The agent explained that there's often a delay between when they receive your return and when the payment systems update.

How does this even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously awful. Are you saying this service somehow jumps the queue or something?

This sounds like complete BS to be honest. Nothing can magically get you through IRS phone lines faster. They're government phone lines with massive wait times for everyone. I'm extremely doubtful this actually works - more likely just takes your money and you still wait forever.

It doesn't jump the queue or do anything improper. What it does is automate the calling and waiting process. Their system keeps calling the IRS using optimized timing (based on historical data about call volumes) and navigating through all the prompts for you. When it finally gets a human on the line, it calls your phone and connects you. The reason it works is because most people give up after being on hold for 30+ minutes. Their system never gives up and keeps trying different strategies until it gets through. I was skeptical too, but when I got connected to an actual IRS agent after just making a cup of coffee, I was sold on the concept.

Well I'm eating my words now. After calling out Claimyr as BS in my reply above, I was still desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my missing refund, so I tried it anyway. I figured I'd just dispute the charge if it didn't work. To my complete surprise, I got a call back in about 20 minutes and was connected to an actual IRS representative! They confirmed my return was in the system but had been flagged for a simple identity verification, which is why nothing was showing up in my account yet. The agent walked me through the verification process right there on the phone. I don't know how the service works exactly, but it saved me from taking a day off work to sit on hold. Consider me converted from biggest skeptic to satisfied customer.

Just a heads up that if you filed and paid electronically, you have proof of timely filing even if the payment hasn't processed yet. FreeTaxUSA should have given you confirmation numbers for both your federal and state returns, and these serve as your proof that you filed before the deadline. The important thing is that you FILED on time. As long as you have those confirmation numbers, you can prove you met the deadline. The payment processing might take longer, but that's not on you - you authorized the payment before the deadline. I'd recommend printing out or saving screenshots of all your confirmation emails and payment authorizations just to be safe.

Thanks for this info! I do have all the confirmation emails from FreeTaxUSA - both for my federal and state returns being accepted. So from what you're saying, I shouldn't stress about the payment not showing up in my bank yet? I'm mostly concerned because I don't want to get hit with late payment penalties.

You're welcome! Yes, those confirmation emails are your proof that you filed and authorized payment on time. The IRS and state tax agencies go by when you submitted the return and payment authorization, not when the money actually leaves your bank account. Just keep monitoring your bank account over the next week. If you don't see the state payment process within 5-7 business days, then contact FreeTaxUSA customer service with your confirmation numbers. They should be able to track exactly what happened with the payment. But you've done your part by filing and authorizing payment before the deadline, so you won't get hit with late penalties for processing delays on their end.

Has anyone else had weird issues with FreeTaxUSA this year? I used them for the first time and noticed some glitches in their system. My state payment went through instantly but the federal one took almost 2 weeks to hit my bank account, and the IRS website showed no record of my return for about 10 days.

I've been using FreeTaxUSA for 3 years and never had issues until this year. My state refund has been "processing" for over a month now. Their customer service said it's because state systems are backed up, but I'm not so sure. Might try a different service next year.

I completely understand your panic - I went through the exact same thing last year! The key thing to remember is that "accepted" and "processed" are two different steps. When FreeTaxUSA says your return was accepted, it means the IRS received it and it passed their initial validation checks. The full processing (which updates your account balance and payment obligations) can take up to 21 days during busy season. For your immediate concerns: 1) Check your FreeTaxUSA account dashboard - it should show confirmation numbers for both your federal and state filings, 2) Your state payment delay is normal - ACH transfers can take 3-5 business days to appear, and 3) Don't worry about penalties since you filed before the deadline. If you're still anxious after a week and want to verify everything is in order, you can request your tax transcript from the IRS website (irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript) - this will show if your return is actually in their system even before it appears on the regular "Where's My Refund" tool. You did everything right by filing on time. The system is just slow during peak season!

This is really helpful advice! I'm in a similar situation as the original poster and was starting to worry something went wrong with my filing. The distinction between "accepted" and "processed" makes so much sense now - I was wondering why the IRS website wasn't showing my balance yet even though I got confirmation emails. Quick question about the tax transcript - is that something I can access immediately after filing, or do I need to wait for processing to complete? I'd love to have that extra peace of mind that my return is actually in their system. Thanks for breaking this down so clearly!

You can actually access your tax transcript pretty quickly after filing! In most cases, it shows up within 1-2 weeks of the IRS accepting your return, which is much faster than the full processing timeline. To get it, go to irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript and choose "Get Transcript Online." You'll need to verify your identity, but once you're in, look for your "Record of Account Transcript" for the current tax year. This will show all the transaction codes and dates related to your return, even if it hasn't fully processed yet. The transcript is actually more detailed than the regular "Where's My Refund" tool and will give you a much clearer picture of exactly where your return stands in the system. If your return was truly accepted, you should see entries showing when it was received and initial processing steps, even before your balance appears on the main IRS website.
