Missing my 1099 form for 2023 tax return - need to mail in return but don't have all forms. Do I still need to send paper copies of every 1099?
I'm in a frustrating situation with my taxes this year. Had to mail in my 2023 return because the e-file attempt completely failed (tried 3 times with different software!). The IRS instructions say I need to include paper copies of ALL my tax documents, including W-2s and 1099s... but I'm missing one of my 1099 forms and can't track it down anywhere. I've accurately reported all the income from this missing 1099 on my return (I had the numbers in my records), but I just don't have the actual paper form to include with my mailed return. The tax preparer who helped me quit mid-season and isn't returning calls. Will the IRS reject my entire return if I mail it without including this one 1099 form? I included everything else - all W-2s and other 1099s I received. I don't want to delay filing any longer, but I'm worried they'll flag this as incomplete. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

You should be fine mailing in your return without that 1099. The IRS mainly wants to ensure you're reporting all your income correctly. Since you've included the income on your tax return based on your records, that's what matters most. The IRS already receives copies of all 1099s from the issuers, so they have that information in their system. The paper copies you send are more for verification purposes. If there's a discrepancy later, they'll contact you. I'd recommend including a brief note with your return explaining that you reported all income but are missing a physical copy of one 1099 form. This shows good faith and transparency on your part.

•Thanks for the info! Just wondering - would it be better to try contacting the company that issued the 1099 to get another copy before filing? Or is it really not worth the delay? My return is already like 2 months late...

•Contacting the company for another copy is always a good option if you can get it quickly. Most companies can email you a copy within a day or two, which wouldn't cause much additional delay. If getting the 1099 would take weeks or you've already tried without success, I wouldn't delay further. The most important thing is that you've reported the income accurately. The IRS is primarily concerned with collecting the proper tax amount, not whether you have every piece of paper.

After facing a similar issue last year, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which has been a game-changer for organizing my tax documents. I was missing multiple 1099s and worried about mailing my return without them. The site helped me track down which forms I was missing by analyzing my tax history and identifying likely issuers. Their document organization feature keeps digital copies of everything, so even if I lose the paper version, I always have backup. Super helpful for situations exactly like yours where you need to reference something but the physical copy is nowhere to be found.

•How exactly does it work with tracking down missing forms? Does it actually contact the companies for you or just tell you who should have sent you forms?

•Sounds interesting but I'm skeptical about giving access to my tax info to yet another online service. How secure is it? And can it really help with forms from previous years or only going forward?

•It doesn't contact companies directly, but it analyzes your previous tax returns and bank deposits to identify likely sources of 1099 income. This gives you a checklist of companies to contact for missing forms. I was able to identify three missing 1099s that I wouldn't have remembered otherwise. For security, they use bank-level encryption and don't store your actual tax documents on their servers after analysis unless you opt into their secure storage feature. And yes, it works for previous years too! I used it to reconstruct which documents I should have received for 2022 when I needed to amend that return.

Just wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai - I decided to try it despite my initial skepticism. Wow, it actually worked incredibly well for my situation! I had three 1099-NECs from last year that I couldn't locate, and the system identified all the likely issuers based on my bank deposit history. The document tracking feature flagged inconsistencies between what I reported last year and what forms I actually had. Saved me from potentially missing about $1,800 in income that I might have forgotten to report. Even better, I discovered I qualified for additional deductions I hadn't taken. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're in a similar situation with missing forms.

If you're still struggling with getting response from the IRS about your mailed return, I highly recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). After mailing my return without one 1099 last year, I was anxious whether it processed correctly, but couldn't get through to an actual person at the IRS for weeks. Claimyr got me connected to a real IRS agent in about 15 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. They have this clever system that navigates the IRS phone tree for you and calls you back when an agent is on the line. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The agent confirmed my return was processing fine despite the missing form, which gave me huge peace of mind. Definitely worth it for important tax questions that only a live IRS person can answer.

•Wait, this actually works? I've been trying to get through to the IRS for THREE WEEKS about my amended return and keep getting disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. How much does this service cost?

•This sounds like a scam. Why would I pay a third party when I can just keep calling the IRS myself? And how do I know they're not just recording my conversations or stealing my info?

•Yes, it actually works! The service uses an automated system to navigate the IRS phone tree and wait on hold for you. When they reach a live agent, you get a call connecting you directly to that person. It saved me hours of frustration and hold music. I completely understand the skepticism. I felt the same way initially. They don't listen to your calls or access your personal information - they simply connect you to an IRS agent, and then you handle the conversation directly. They're just solving the "getting through" problem, which is honestly the hardest part of dealing with the IRS these days.

I need to publicly eat my words about Claimyr. After posting my skeptical comment, I was desperate enough to try it because I absolutely needed to talk to someone at the IRS about a notice I received. After three weeks of trying on my own and never getting through, Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 25 minutes. The service just handles the waiting part - they called me back when they had an actual IRS person on the line, and I spoke directly with the agent. My issue about a missing form (similar to OP's situation) was resolved in a 10-minute conversation. The agent confirmed they don't need every paper 1099 as long as the income is reported correctly. Definitely changed my opinion about this service.

Something similar happened to me in 2022 - I couldn't find a 1099-MISC from a small client but had reported all the income. I just wrote a little note explaining the situation and attached it to my return. Never heard anything about it, so I assume it was fine! But one thing to consider - the companies that issue 1099s are required to send them to you by January 31, and they also send copies to the IRS. So the IRS already has a copy of your 1099 in their system, even if you don't have yours. They mainly want to make sure the numbers match up.

•Does the IRS actually check every single form against what they have on file? I thought they just randomly audit a small percentage of returns?

•The IRS uses automated matching programs that compare what's reported on your tax return with the information they receive from employers, banks, and other institutions. It's not a manual process checking every form, but their systems will flag discrepancies. This automated matching happens for most returns, not just those selected for audit. So if the income on your missing 1099 doesn't match what you reported, you might receive a notice from the IRS later. That's why it's important to report the income accurately even if you don't have the form.

Ughhh I'm in the exact same boat! My tax software kept giving me errors when I tried to e-file so now I have to mail everything. Has anyone tried calling the company that issued the 1099 directly? My situation is with a 1099-NEC from a company I did freelance work for last summer but I think I threw out the form accidentally when moving in December...

•Yes! Definitely call the company directly. Most businesses can easily generate a new copy of your 1099. I had this issue with a 1099-INT from my bank and they emailed me a PDF version within an hour of calling. Some companies even have portals where you can download your tax documents yourself.
