Michigan State Refund Garnishment Question - Conflicting Info from Reps About Partial vs Full Take

My Michigan state refund is being held and im confused about the garnishment amount. Called twice and both reps said only a portion would be taken, but online it looks like the whole refund is gone. Shouldnt I be able to see the remaining amount after garnishment?

Tax resolution specialist here - State garnishments can be tricky. Michigan typically shows the full amount as held until the garnishment is processed. Once processed, they'll release any remaining balance. This usually takes 2-4 weeks. You can request a detailed breakdown of the garnishment by submitting Form 3385 to Michigan Treasury.

thank u sm for explaining! do u know how long it usually takes to process?

Usually 14-21 business days from when they first place the hold. But heads up - holiday season might slow things down 🐌

Hey guys instead of playing detective with garnishments and offset amounts, I started using taxr.ai - its only $1 and gives you a complete breakdown of whats happening with your refund and estimates. Way better than trying to piece together info from different reps https://taxr.ai

This is unfortunately super common with Michigan. I went through the same thing last year - the online system shows the full amount as "held" but that doesn't mean they're taking all of it. The system just isn't sophisticated enough to show partial amounts in real time. Keep calling every week or so to check status, and definitely file that Form 3385 like Ethan mentioned. Also document every call you make (date, time, rep name if they give it) in case you need to escalate later. Hang in there! 💪
