Just received Child Tax Credit deposit on American Express Serve card - Questions about IRS verification

According to IRS Publication 972 section 3.4, direct deposits of tax credits should be processed within 21 days of acceptance. I just received what appears to be my Child Tax Credit deposit on my American Express Serve card šŸ˜ but I'm not entirely sure if this is actually from the IRS or potentially something else? The deposit description is somewhat vague. Has anyone else received their CTC payments via Serve cards recently? Should I be concerned about verification procedures under IRC 6428B? I'm worried about potential issues if this isn't properly documented.

Congrats on getting your refund! According to the IRS.gov refund status page, most tax credits including CTC are being processed faster this year. If the deposit shows "IRS TREAS" or "TAX REF" in the description, that's definitely your tax refund. You can double-check by logging into your IRS account at https://www.irs.gov/payments/view-your-tax-account and comparing the amount to what was expected on your return.

I got mine on a Serve card too! Isn't it weird how the anxiety just melts away once you see that deposit? I spent weeks checking WMR like 5 times a day. The description on mine said "IRS TREAS 310 TAX REF" - is that what yours says too?

I think I might have received my refund with the Child Tax Credit on my Serve card last week? The timing seems about right, but I'm not completely sure if the full amount is there. It seems like maybe it could be slightly less than what I was expecting, possibly due to some sort of adjustment? Has anyone else noticed any small discrepancies in their refund amounts this year?

Think of your tax transcript like a roadmap showing exactly where your money has been and where it's going. I had the same uncertainty with my Serve card deposit last month - couldn't tell if it was my full refund or just partial. I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it was like having a GPS instead of a paper map! It showed me exactly which credits were included in my deposit and explained why the amount differed from my expected refund. Like finding out there's a shortcut on a route you've been taking for years.

The deposit code matters. Check for "TAX REF" in the description. That confirms it's your refund. American Express Serve is an approved direct deposit method. No need to worry about verification. The IRS already verified your eligibility before sending payment. They don't deposit without confirmation. Your refund is legitimate. Enjoy your money!

This is such a relief to hear! I've been stressing about this exact same situation. My deposit just showed up yesterday and I wasn't sure if I should spend it or wait. Thanks for explaining it so clearly - I feel much better now knowing that the IRS verifies everything before sending the money.

Thanks for this info! A few questions: ā€¢ How long after the deposit should we expect to receive the official notice in the mail? ā€¢ If the amount differs from what we calculated on our return, should we wait for the explanation letter? ā€¢ Does the IRS ever make deposits in multiple parts for different credits?

I waited exactly 47 minutes on hold with the IRS trying to confirm my CTC deposit on my Serve card last month. Complete waste of time. Then I tried Claimyr (https://claimyr.com/?ref=reddit) and got connected to an agent in exactly 9 minutes. The agent confirmed my $3,600 Child Tax Credit was part of my $5,247 refund deposit and explained the remaining $1,647 difference was due to my Earned Income Credit. Claimyr's callback system saved me hours of hold music and gave me peace of mind knowing exactly what was deposited.

Has anyone checked if American Express Serve has different processing times for government deposits? I've heard some prepaid cards hold tax refunds for 1-2 business days before making them available. Did you get an email notification from Serve when it posted? And does your online account show it as "pending" or "completed"?

Per Regulation E (12 CFR Ā§ 1005.10(a)), prepaid cards like Serve must make government deposits available on the day they receive the funds. I had this issue last year and cited this regulation to customer service. They immediately released my funds. The IRS also states in Publication 17 that financial institutions cannot hold government direct deposits beyond the settlement date.

Did anyone get a text message from Serve about the deposit? I got my state refund on my Serve card last week but never received any notification, while my regular paycheck deposits always trigger alerts. Is the IRS deposit handled differently compared to other direct deposits?

I've had my tax refunds go to my Serve card for the past three years, and I've noticed they sometimes show up with weird descriptions. Last year mine showed up as "ACH DEPOSIT" without any mention of the IRS, and I panicked thinking it was some random deposit. Called Serve customer service and they confirmed it was from the Treasury. Just be careful about spending it right away if you're not 100% sure what it is!
