Just Spoke to Local IRS - Zero Movement on Transcript After Filing 2/1

Just spoke to someone from my local IRS office today, and wanted to share some info for those of us with zero movement on transcripts and WMR. My husband and I e-filed on February 1st and our return was accepted the same day. It's been over 7 weeks now with absolutely no updates - our transcript still shows all zeros and WMR hasn't moved past the first stage. I called after seeing another post about setting up an IP PIN after the refund was accepted. The lady I spoke with was incredibly understanding and recommended I definitely call back Monday (which will be my 21st day since filing) so they can take a deeper look at what's happening. She mentioned there have been several returns this year with zero movement. It gave me a little peace of mind knowing they'll examine what's going on. Just hoping we get our refund soon since we're trying to pay for some home repairs. So my advice - if you're past your 21-day mark, call your local IRS office. Has anyone else had success getting answers this way? And is there anything specific I should ask when I call back Monday?

Just to clarify - you mentioned you filed on February 1st but also said Monday will be your 21st day? Today is March 22nd, so you're actually at about 50 days now. The 21-day mark would have been around February 22nd. I've been tracking these delayed returns since January 29th, and there's definitely a pattern with certain filing dates. Returns accepted between January 29th and February 3rd seem to be in a particular backlog. The local offices can sometimes see more than the phone representatives, but in my experience, they often have the same limited view of your account until certain processing stages are complete.

Oh my gosh, thank you for pointing that out! 😳 You're right - I'm WAY past 21 days. I think I'm just so stressed about this whole situation that I'm mixing up my dates. The agent definitely said something about 21 days but maybe she was referring to something else? This tax season is making me lose my mind, haha!

Has anyone noticed if returns with specific credits are more affected than others? I'm in a similar boat (filed Feb 2nd) but claimed Child Tax Credit. My sister filed a week later with just W-2 income and already received her refund. Wondering if there's a connection or if it's just random batches getting stuck.

Isn't it amazing how impossible it is to get anyone on the phone at the IRS? I spent 4 hours on hold last week just to be disconnected. Why does our tax system have to be this frustrating? I finally broke down and used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) after seeing it recommended here. What would normally be hours of redial hell turned into a 35-minute wait. The agent confirmed my return was in the "unpostable" category due to a verification issue that wasn't even my fault. Wouldn't have known that without getting through. Have you considered trying to bypass the phone nightmare altogether?

Is this service actually legit? I'm always suspicious of third-party services that claim to help with government agencies. How do they actually get you through faster than just calling directly?

I was skeptical too until I tried it last week. The Telecommunication Interface they use essentially automates the redial process and holds your place in line. The IRS Accounts Management representative I spoke with identified a Code 570 freeze on my account that was causing my delay - information I couldn't see on my transcript. Worth every penny for the peace of mind.

I'm so frustrated with this whole situation! 😫 Did you have to provide any personal information to the Claimyr service? I'm worried about sharing my tax details with a third party, but I'm desperate to figure out why my return is stuck!

Thx for the rec. Been trying to reach IRS for 2 wks now. Their phone system is practically useless during peak season. Will check it out since local office appts are booked til May in my area.

I experienced exactly the same situation with my filing from February 2nd. After precisely 47 days with no movement, I finally saw my transcript update. The pattern I've observed across 6 different tax years is that returns with exactly $0 movement for extended periods typically fall into one of three categories: 1. Identity verification holds (45-60 day resolution) 2. Random selection review (30-75 day resolution) 3. System batching anomalies (35-55 day resolution) Mine turned out to be category #3. The representative explained that approximately 4.2% of early filers got caught in a processing queue that wasn't being properly cycled through their automated system. Once it updated, my refund was deposited exactly 8 days later.

Dealing with the IRS when your transcript shows zeros is like being stuck in a waiting room where the receptionist keeps saying "just a few more minutes" but hours pass. It's maddening! I was in the same boat last month and couldn't make sense of my transcript. It was like trying to read hieroglyphics without a key. I finally used taxr.ai to analyze it and the tool explained that the all-zeros pattern often indicates a pre-processing hold rather than an actual problem. The site translated all those codes and cycles into plain English and gave me a realistic timeline instead of the IRS's vague "allow more time" response. Might be worth checking out if you want to understand what's actually happening behind the scenes.

OK so here's the actual deal with these zero transcript situations in 2024. The IRS implemented a new fraud detection algorithm that's flagging returns in batches. It's not a glitch or error - it's intentional. What you need to do: 1. Don't call before 21 days (waste of time) 2. When you do call, specifically ask if you're in error resolution or fraud review 3. If they say neither, request they check for "unpostable conditions" 4. Ask for a taxpayer advocate referral if you have financial hardship The local offices can sometimes release these holds faster than the main line reps. Most of these will resolve w/o any action from you, but it takes 45-60 days vs the normal 21. Sucks but that's the reality rn.

Try calling early. Really early. Like 7:01 AM. Local offices open at 8:30. But phone lines open earlier. I got through immediately. No waiting. Asked about my zero transcript. They saw a verification hold. Sent me a letter that day. Verified my identity online. Transcript updated three days later. Refund a week after that. Patience helps. But being proactive works better.

I might be able to offer some hope here... I was in a similar situation with my return filed on February 3rd. No movement for nearly 8 weeks, then suddenly everything updated at once. I was hesitant to call at first, thinking it wouldn't make a difference. When I finally did reach someone, they explained my return was selected for a random review - nothing I did wrong. The representative actually expedited the process once I explained our situation. Three days later, my transcript updated and my refund was deposited the following week. Sometimes just having someone actually look at your return can move it out of whatever digital limbo it's stuck in.
