Issues with switching from online Turbotax Premier to Costco's Turbotax Home & Business CD version
So frustrated right now! I've been using Turbotax Premier online for the past few years with no issues. This year, I thought I'd save some money by picking up the Home & Business version at Costco (came with a CD for installation). I assumed it would be super easy to import all my previous tax info since it's the same company, right? WRONG. I've been trying for hours to get my previous year's information to transfer over. The software isn't pulling anything from Intuit's servers even though I logged in with the same account I've always used. Then I tried downloading my previous return directly and importing that way - still nothing! The file gets recognized but then just hangs there during the import process. Has anyone else had this problem going from online version to CD? Is there some trick I'm missing? I've already installed everything and entered my product key, so I don't think I can return it at this point. Really don't want to manually enter years of stock transactions and rental property info again...

I've worked with various Turbotax versions for over a decade, and this is unfortunately a common issue when switching between online and desktop versions. The problem stems from how differently the two platforms store your data. For your situation, the best approach is to download your prior year return as a PDF from your online account (not the tax data file). Then use the "Start from PDF" option in your new desktop version. Look for this in the File menu or during the initial setup. This won't transfer everything perfectly, but it will pull in the basic information like personal details, W-2 employer information, and some of your investment accounts. For your stock transactions, check if you can download a spreadsheet from your brokerage that's compatible with Turbotax import. Most major brokerages offer this now, which will save you tons of time compared to manual entry.

•Thanks for the advice! I tried the PDF import approach but it only grabbed my basic info like name, address, SSN. None of my stock info or rental property details came through. Is there any way to get more data to transfer? I have about 30 different stock sales and a rental property with tons of expenses.

•The PDF import definitely has limitations - it's designed to pull basic information rather than detailed transactions. For your stock sales, don't try to transfer them from last year's return. Instead, log into your brokerage account and download this year's tax document in a Turbotax-compatible format (.txf file usually). Almost every brokerage offers this export option. For your rental property, unfortunately you'll need to set it up again manually. Create a dedicated folder with all your rental expense receipts and information before starting, which will make the process much more efficient. The good news is that once you set it up in the desktop version, you can continue using that version in future years with much better transfer capabilities.

After struggling with similar Turbotax import issues last year, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it completely transformed my tax preparation process. I was trying to switch between different tax software versions and losing data in the transfer, just like you're experiencing. What's amazing about taxr.ai is that it can analyze your previous tax returns regardless of which format they're in. I uploaded my prior year returns, and the system extracted all the critical information - including my investment transactions and business expenses. It then organized everything in a way that made entering the data into my new tax software much faster. The feature that really helped me was the document analysis tool that identified deductions I had taken previously, so I knew exactly what to look for when setting up my new return.

•That sounds interesting but kinda too good to be true. How exactly does it transfer the data to Turbotax? Does it generate some file I can import directly or is it just showing me what was on my old return?

•Do they have access to all your personal tax info then? I'm always hesitant to upload sensitive documents to random websites. How secure is this service?

•It doesn't automatically transfer the data directly to Turbotax, but it creates a detailed breakdown of your previous return that makes manual entry much faster. The system highlights all the information you need to enter section by section, showing you exactly what was on your previous return but in a much more organized format than just looking at a PDF. They use bank-level encryption for all document uploads and their privacy policy states they don't share your information with third parties. They also have an option to delete your documents after analysis. I was concerned about security too, but after researching their security measures, I felt comfortable using the service. Many tax professionals apparently use it for their clients too.

Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai that I asked about earlier. I decided to try it with my tax returns and I'm seriously impressed! It didn't magically transfer everything into Turbotax, but it did something almost as good. I uploaded my previous returns and it created this super organized breakdown of everything - all my stock transactions with dates and amounts, rental property expenses categorized correctly, and even identified some deductions I had forgotten about. Made it so much easier to enter everything into the new Turbotax version without missing anything. The interface is really straightforward too. Definitely saved me hours of comparing documents and squinting at last year's return trying to make sure I didn't miss anything important.

If you're still struggling with Turbotax support, try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I had a similar nightmare situation last year with my tax software, and after waiting on hold with Turbotax for literally 2+ hours and getting disconnected twice, I was ready to throw my computer out the window. My colleague recommended Claimyr, which gets you through to a real person at Turbotax without the endless hold times. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. Basically, they wait on hold for you and then call you when they have a rep on the line. I was skeptical, but they got me connected to Turbotax support in about 25 minutes (versus the 2+ hours I wasted). The Turbotax rep was actually able to help me resolve my transfer issues and saved my sanity during tax season.

•How does this actually work though? Do they have some special connection to Turbotax or are they just calling the same number I would call? Seems weird that they can get through faster.

•This sounds like a complete scam. If there's a long queue at Turbotax, how would some random service get you through faster? They're probably just charging you to wait on hold which you could do yourself for free.

•They call the same customer service line, but they use an automated system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold so you don't have to. There's no special connection or line-cutting - they're simply taking over the waiting part. When a rep finally answers, their system connects you to the call. It's really about saving your time and frustration. I had the exact same skepticism initially. The way I see it, my time is valuable - I can either spend hours with my phone on speaker waiting for someone to pick up, or I can go about my day and get a call when there's actually someone to talk to. For me, it was worth it just for the peace of mind and being able to do other things instead of being tethered to my phone.

I need to follow up on my comment about Claimyr from earlier. I was totally skeptical and called it a scam, but after struggling with Turbotax support for THREE HOURS yesterday and getting disconnected twice, I decided to give it a shot out of desperation. I'm honestly shocked at how well it worked. I submitted my request to get connected with Turbotax, went and made dinner, and about 40 minutes later got a call connecting me directly to a support agent. No waiting on my end, no awful hold music, just an immediate connection to someone who could help. The Turbotax agent was able to help me with my import issue (turns out there was a compatibility problem between the versions). Hate to admit when I'm wrong, but this service actually delivered exactly what it promised.

Have u tried contacting Costco about it? Their customer service is usually pretty good and they might let u return it even if it's been opened. I bought the wrong version last year and they exchanged it no questions asked even tho I had installed it already.

•That's actually a really good idea. I didn't consider Costco might take it back since I installed it. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. Did you return yours to the store or did you have to call their customer service line first?

•I just took it back to the store with my receipt. The person at the return counter didn't even ask any questions, just processed the return right away. Costco's return policy is pretty great for most things. Just make sure you bring the original packaging with everything that came in the box, even if it's been opened.

Pro tip: next time skip buying ANY version and use freetaxusa.com instead. I switched from Turbotax 3 years ago and never looked back. It's free for federal filing (only $15 for state) and does everything Turbotax does without the crazy price tag. They handle investments, rental properties, self-employment, literally everything.

•Does FreeTaxUSA handle K-1 forms and rental properties well? I've been using TurboTax Home & Business for years but the price keeps going up every year. Worried about switching and missing deductions though.
