IRS bounced me to another number for identity verification - anyone else dealt with this?
I just got off the phone with the IRS and they couldn't help me. They gave me another number to call for identity verification and tax return information. Has anyone else had to deal with this? It's so frustrating to be bounced around like this when I'm just trying to get my refund processed.

Ugh, welcome to the club. I've been dealing with this for months. The IRS is a total mess right now. Have you tried calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service? They might be able to help push things along.

•Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't tried them yet. How long did it take you to get through to someone there?

•It took me about a week of trying, but once I got through, they were pretty helpful. Just be persistent!

•Taxpayer Advocate Service is useless. I tried them and they just told me to wait. Total waste of time 🙄

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/5jrMesbidvI

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

Have you checked your transcript online? Sometimes you can see if there's an issue with your return there before you even get a letter.

This is why we need tax reform. The system is broken and outdated. In other countries, the government just sends you a bill or a refund automatically. No need for all this bureaucratic nonsense.

Pro tip: call right when they open in the morning. You're more likely to get through and the agents are less burnt out.

•Thanks for the advice! What time do they open?

•7am local time for most offices. But double check on the IRS website to be sure.

I had the same issue last year. Turns out there was a discrepancy between what my employer reported and what I put on my return. Double check all your documents and make sure everything matches up exactly.

Have you tried faxing your documents? Sometimes that's faster than mailing or waiting on hold. Just make sure to use a cover sheet with your info and case number if you have one.

•What year is it? 1995? Who still uses fax machines? 🤣

I feel your pain. I've been waiting on my refund for 6 months now. Every time I call, it's a different story. Hang in there!

Here's what worked for me: 1. Gather all your documents (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) 2. Write a detailed letter explaining your situation 3. Make copies of everything 4. Send it all via certified mail 5. Follow up with a call after 2 weeks It's a pain, but it got the ball rolling on my case. Good luck!
