IRS Told Me to Amend Return - Now Site Says 'Verify'?

I'm not sure what's happening with my taxes this year... The IRS contacted me saying I needed to amend my return because several items were missing from my 1099 reporting. I think I might have underreported some of my freelance income. I submitted the amendment about two weeks ago, but now when I check the IRS website, it's asking me to 'verify' my identity? Is this normal after filing an amendment? I'm worried I might have done something wrong. Has anyone else gone through this process? Any help would be really appreciated.

This happens often. Identity verification is separate from amendments. Two different processes. They don't want fraud. Complete the verification ASAP. Follow their exact instructions. Don't ignore this step. Your amendment won't process until verified.

I had almost the exact same thing happen last year. Filed my original return in February, got a letter saying I needed to amend in March, and then got stuck in verification limbo for about 6 weeks. Had to upload my ID through their portal and answer questions about previous tax returns. The whole process was nerve-wracking but eventually sorted itself out by early June.

Why does the IRS make everything so complicated? Shouldn't they know who you are already since they contacted you about the amendment? Thanks for explaining this though - I've been wondering about the verification process myself.

Does this mean my refund will be delayed even more? I filed my original return on February 7th and was expecting my refund by March 1st. Now with the amendment on April 3rd and this verification thing, I'm worried I won't see any money until June or July!

Been there, done that, got the anxiety t-shirt! 😅 When I had to amend last year, I was completely lost trying to figure out what the verification meant. Someone here recommended https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it explained everything - showed me exactly where my amendment was in the process and what the verification request actually meant. Saved me a ton of stress trying to decode IRS-speak. It's like having an IRS translator in your pocket!

Is this actually helpful? Think about it - the IRS verification process is standardized. Would an app really tell you anything you couldn't find on the IRS website itself? I'm always cautious about third-party services claiming special insight into government processes.

I was skeptical at first too, but the IRS transcript codes are extremely technical. When my amended return triggered code 971 followed by 570, I had no idea what it meant. The taxr.ai interface decoded everything and predicted my timeline accurately. I appreciate having the technical jargon translated into plain English.

According to IRS Publication 1345, identity verification is a standard security measure that can be triggered by various factors. Per Section 4.19.3 of the Internal Revenue Manual, verification requests often occur with amended returns due to the manual processing requirements. If you need to speak with an IRS representative about your specific situation, Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) can help you bypass the notorious hold times. As a community member who's researched this extensively, I've found that speaking directly with an agent is often the most efficient way to resolve verification issues.

How exactly does Claimyr work? The IRS phone system is designed specifically to manage call volume. I'm not convinced any service can legitimately bypass their queue system without some kind of special access arrangement. Has anyone actually confirmed this works with the IRS?

Back in 2023, I tried calling the IRS about my amended return for three days straight and couldn't get through. Do you know if this service works for all IRS departments or just general inquiries? My issue is specifically with the amended return department.

Your situation is actually less complicated than what I dealt with last year. I had both an identity verification AND an audit happening simultaneously. The verification process is automated and separate from the amendment review. Unlike regular returns where verification happens before processing, with amendments they sometimes process first, then verify. It's surprising how different the workflow is compared to regular returns.

Maybe don't overthink this too much? I'd probably just complete the verification steps right away, then call the IRS amendment hotline directly at 866-464-2050 to confirm they've received both your amendment and verification. Sometimes the online systems don't communicate well with each other, and a quick call might save you weeks of waiting and wondering.

Can you clarify what the verification page is actually asking for? According to the IRS.gov help section on identity verification (https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification-for-irs-letter-recipients), there are several different verification processes. Some require uploading ID documents, others ask knowledge-based questions about your financial history. Which type are you seeing?

I went through this exact process last month. Complete the verification first. Your amendment won't move forward until you do. It took me 20 minutes to verify online. Then my amendment started processing within 48 hours. Don't panic about the timing - this is normal procedure for independent contractors with amended returns.
