IRS Sending Only $2,146 Instead of Expected $5k Refund on 2025 Tax Return - Transcript Shows Lower Amount
Just got my transcript updated and I see code 846 for $3,146.00 dated 02-13-2025, but this is way less than what I was supposed to get. My expected refund was around $5k. Looking at my transcript, there's a clear "Refund issued" line with code 846 showing exactly $3,146.00 scheduled for February 13, 2025, but this amount is less than half of what I was expecting. TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION 846 Refund issued DATE 02-13-2025 AMOUNT $3,146.00 This Product Contains Sensitive Taxpayer Data Anyone know why the IRS would only send part of the refund? Should I be worried that they're sending $3,146.00 instead of the full amount? Looking at my transcript multiple times to confirm, but it definitely shows "846 Refund issued" with that smaller amount. I filed on January 29th and was accepted the same day. I claimed EIC and the child tax credit for my two kids. My return was pretty straightforward - W2 income, standard deduction, and those two credits. When I ran the numbers through TurboTax, it showed I should be getting around $5,100. Is this partial payment normal? Will there be another deposit coming soon? Or did the IRS adjust something and I just don't see it on the transcript? The transcript doesn't show any obvious adjustment codes that would explain the $2,000 difference.

The transaction code 846 showing $2,146.00 for February 12, 2025 is an official refund issuance confirmation from the IRS. When you see code 846, it means the IRS has officially approved and scheduled a refund payment. However, since this amount is significantly lower than your expected $5,000 refund, there are several likely explanations: 1. The remaining amount may be under additional review 2. There could be an offset due to existing federal debts (student loans, back taxes, etc.) 3. The IRS may have made adjustments to your claimed credits or deductions The February 12, 2025 date indicates when this portion of the refund is scheduled to be released to your bank account or mailed as a check. You should check your transcript for additional codes like 570 (additional account action pending) or 971 (notice issued) that might explain the reduced amount. If no explanatory codes are present, you may receive a separate notice from the IRS explaining the difference or you can contact them directly to inquire about the remaining balance.

Check for code 898 on your transcript - thats usually the offset indicator. You can also call the TOP (Treasury Offset Program) at 800-304-3107

You should try taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly whats happening with your refund. I used it last week when I had a similar situation and it explained everything. Only costs a buck but totally worth it. https://taxr.ai

Yeah its totally safe! They dont store your data and the analysis is instant. Better than waiting on hold with IRS for 3 hours lol

Did you claim EIC or child tax credit? Sometimes they split those up and send em separate
