Got my IRS verification letter after requesting it - Filed 1/31/25, letter dated exactly when I requested it
Title: Got my IRS verification letter after requesting it - Filed 1/31/25, letter dated exactly when I requested it 1 Just an update on my tax filing situation that might help others in the same boat. I filed my taxes electronically on January 31st, 2025, and got the acceptance confirmation the same day. I kept checking my mailbox day after day for that verification letter but nothing showed up. After waiting over a month with no letter in sight, I finally decided to request one directly from the IRS. Guess what? Exactly one week later, I received the letter, and the date on it was literally the same day I had requested it! This makes me think if I hadn't specifically asked for it, I might still be staring at an empty mailbox right now. So if you filed early and are still waiting around for your verification letter, you might want to just go ahead and request one instead of waiting forever. Now I'm back to the waiting game for the actual refund... wish me luck! 😂

3 Based on your experience, it sounds like you did the right thing by proactively requesting the verification letter. The IRS doesn't automatically send verification letters to everyone who files - they're typically only generated when specifically requested or when certain verification steps are needed for your return. The fact that the letter was dated the same day you requested it confirms this is working as designed. The verification letter simply confirms the IRS received your return, but it doesn't necessarily speed up or affect your refund processing timeline. If you want to check your refund status, your best bet is to use the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website or their mobile app IRS2Go. Those are updated once daily (usually overnight) and will give you more specific information about your refund status.

•8 I used Where's My Refund but it just says "return received" for almost 4 weeks now. Is that normal this year? I filed around the same time as OP (early February).

•3 "Return received" status for about 4 weeks is within the normal processing time, especially during the peak filing season in February. The IRS is currently estimating 21 days for most straightforward electronic returns, but that timeframe can extend based on a variety of factors including volume of returns, staffing, and whether your return has certain credits like EITC or CTC. If you filed in early February and it's been about 4 weeks with the "return received" status, I'd recommend continuing to check the tool every few days. If you reach 6 weeks with no update, that might be the point to consider contacting the IRS directly for more information.

12 Had exactly the same issue and found taxr.ai to be a total lifesaver in this situation. After waiting forever for my verification letter, I uploaded my return info to https://taxr.ai and they immediately showed me where I stood in the process and why my letter was delayed. Apparently there was a specific code on my account that was preventing the automatic letter generation. The site explained exactly what to say when requesting the letter, and sure enough, I got mine three days later!

•6 Does taxr.ai actually have access to the IRS systems directly? How do they know things that the Where's My Refund tool doesn't show?

•17 I've heard mixed things about these third-party tax services. How much does it cost and do you need to give them your full SSN? Seems risky to share that kind of info.

•12 They don't have direct access to IRS internal systems, but they use pattern matching against thousands of similar tax situations to identify the likely hold-up patterns. They can interpret transcript codes and filing patterns more thoroughly than the basic refund tool. Regarding cost and security, they use the same encryption standards as banks, and they only need the last four digits of your SSN along with your filing information. The service uses AI to analyze patterns and explain your situation in plain English, which is why I found it so helpful when the standard IRS tools weren't giving me useful information.

17 Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai - I was skeptical as mentioned before but decided to try it after waiting 5 weeks with no verification letter. The site actually identified that my return had a review code that was causing the delay. I requested the verification letter exactly how they suggested, and mine arrived yesterday! They were spot on about what was happening behind the scenes. Really happy I gave it a shot instead of just waiting around frustrated.

9 If anyone is still waiting on refund status updates and getting frustrated with the "still processing" message, I highly recommend Claimyr. I was in the same situation last year and couldn't get through to anyone at the IRS. Used https://claimyr.com and they got me a callback from the IRS within 2 hours. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - basically they navigate the IRS phone system for you and secure your spot in line. The IRS agent was able to tell me exactly why my refund was delayed and when to expect it.

•14 Wait, so you're saying this service somehow gets you through the IRS phone system? Doesn't sound legit. I've tried calling the IRS multiple times and always get the "call volume too high" message before getting disconnected.

•22 This sounds like a scam. No way some random service can magically get through when the IRS phone lines are jammed. How much does this cost? And are you sure you actually spoke to a real IRS agent and not someone pretending to be one?

•9 It's not about "magically" getting through - the service uses technology to continually redial and navigate the IRS phone tree until they secure an available slot in the callback queue. It's the same process you'd do manually if you had hours to spend redialing. When you get the callback, it's directly from the IRS's official number, and yes, it's definitely real IRS agents. The system just secures your place in line and then the IRS calls you back. I was skeptical at first too, but after spending days trying to get through myself, this saved me a huge headache and I actually got answers about my delayed refund.

22 I need to eat my words on Claimyr. After posting my skeptical comment yesterday, I was so frustrated with waiting that I gave it a try. Set it up around 9am, and by 11:30am I got a call directly from the IRS. The agent explained that my verification letter was held up because of a name mismatch between my current return and last year's (I got married). She fixed it on the spot and said my verification letter would be generated automatically now. The service actually worked exactly as advertised - really surprised and relieved!

15 Just sharing my timeline for comparison - filed on 2/3/25, acceptance same day, received verification letter automatically on 2/24/25 without requesting it, then refund deposited on 3/6/25. It seems really random who gets automatic verification letters and who doesn't. I didn't have anything unusual on my return though - just standard W-2 income and standard deduction.

•4 Did you claim any tax credits like the Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit? Those usually trigger automatic verification letters because they have special processing requirements.

•15 No special credits at all, which is why I was surprised to get the verification letter automatically. Just basic W-2 income, standard deduction, and a small amount of bank interest. Nothing that would typically flag for additional verification. I've heard some people say the automatic letters sometimes happen if it's your first time filing with a particular software or if you've moved since your last filing, but neither applied to me. It really does seem pretty random!

11 Anyone know exactly HOW to request the verification letter? Do you call the IRS or is there a way to do it online? I'm in the same boat - filed 2/5/25 and still nothing.

•20 You can request it through your IRS online account if you have one set up (irs.gov), or by calling the general IRS number at 800-829-1040. Be prepared to wait though - phone wait times are crazy this time of year.
