Received Empty Envelope from Michigan Treasury Department Marked "IMPORTANT: TAX DOCUMENT ENCLOSED" - Should I Be Concerned?

Just got a letter from the Michigan Department of Treasury in my mailbox today and when I opened it there was nothing inside! The envelope has my address and everything but its completely empty. I can see from the USPS Informed Delivery dashboard that it was expected today (January 21) and it says "IMPORTANT: TAX DOCUMENT ENCLOSED" right on the envelope. It's from the Michigan Department of Treasury, PO Box 30757, Lansing, MI 48909, with Presorted First-Class Mail postage paid by Michigan Dept. of Treasury. The dashboard shows I had 10 mailpieces and 21 packages coming today, but this tax document was the one I was most concerned about. Has this happened to anyone else? Getting kinda worried since I'm still waiting on my refund from last years return. Should I contact the Michigan Treasury Department? Do they usually send empty envelopes or could this be some kind of mistake? The envelope clearly stated "IMPORTANT: TAX DOCUMENT ENCLOSED" so I'm confused and concerned about what might be missing.

Tax professional here - this is actually more common than you'd think. It's usually a printing error at the IRS facility. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to request a copy of whatever letter was supposed to be sent. Make sure to have your tax info ready when you call.

Hey, instead of spending hours on hold with the IRS, you might want to check out taxr.ai - it can analyze your transcript and tell you exactly what's going on and what letters you should be expecting. Its only $1 and saved me so much time. https://taxr.ai

Check your transcript online if you can. Sometimes these empty letters are sent right before they release your refund!

This happened to me twice last year! Both times it was a processing error at their mail facility. I called the Michigan Treasury Department directly (since this was from them, not the IRS) and they were actually pretty helpful. They resent the document within a week. Don't panic - it's usually just a clerical error, but definitely follow up to make sure you don't miss any important deadlines!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is really reassuring to hear. I was getting really anxious about what could have been in that envelope. Did you have to provide any specific information when you called the Michigan Treasury Department, or did they just look you up by your address/SSN?
