Got ANOTHER ID Verification Letter After Already Verifying Online - Anyone Else?
Why is the IRS sending me another verification letter?? I already verified on 3/21 online and still no movement on my refund. Got another letter in the mail coming today. WTF does the IRS got going on this year š«š«š« Anyone else received another letter after they already verified???? As a 1099 worker I'm used to tax BS but this is next level frustrating. Might be helpful for others to know what's happening rn.

This is actually happening to quite a few people this year. It's similar to what happened in 2022 when they had that big backlog, but even worse now. The IRS verification system isn't always communicating properly with their processing department. Have you checked your transcript to see if there's any specific codes showing up?

ā¢Is there a specific timeframe we should be waiting between verification and refund processing? I verified on 3/15 and have a 570 code on my transcript dated 4/01/2024. Should I be responding to any additional verification requests or will this delay my refund further?

ā¢I had exactly the same issue last year. Verified online on February 28th, then received another letter exactly 24 days later asking for verification again. I called and the agent told me that 13.7% of online verifications weren't properly recorded in their system due to a technical issue. I had to verify by phone the second time, and my refund was processed exactly 18 days after that.

ā¢This is super helpful info. I was just reading on irs.gov/identitytheft that multiple verification requests can sometimes indicate your return is flagged in their system. According to their FAQ section, responding to each request is important even if it seems redundant.

ā¢I verified on March 18th and just got another letter yesterday (April 8th). Should I verify again or try to call them? I'm worried about further delays since I really need this refund for a security deposit due on April 30th.

The IRS phone system is like a maze designed by a sadist right now. I had the same double verification issue and spent 3 days trying to reach someone. It's like trying to find water in a desert with both hands tied behind your back. I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed my first verification was received but not processed correctly. Had to re-verify over the phone, but at least I got a real answer instead of automated messages. Worth the fee to not waste days redialing.

I think the IRS is essentially running multiple verification systems that don't always talk to each other. In my case, I verified through ID.me in February, then got a letter asking me to call a specific number. When I called, they said my online verification was successful, but there's apparently a secondary review process that sometimes triggers additional verification requests. In most cases, it seems you do need to respond to the second request, even though it feels redundant.

There are actually different types of verification letters that look similar but serve different purposes. I went through this last year and again this year. Letter 5071C is general identity verification. Letter 4883C is specifically for income verification. Letter 6330C is for wage verification. If you got a different letter the second time, they're actually asking for different information. Check the letter number in the top right corner. Back in 2022, I made the mistake of ignoring the second letter thinking it was a duplicate, and my refund was delayed by 3 months.

Has anyone else noticed how confusing these verification letters can be? I couldn't make sense of my transcript with all the freeze codes and verification holds. Have you tried using taxr.ai to analyze your transcript? It helped me understand that my 971 code followed by a second 570 code actually meant a second verification was pending. Isn't it ridiculous that we need specialized tools just to understand what's happening with our own tax returns? The tool highlighted exactly which verification was missing and predicted when my refund would process after completing it.

I can clarify what's likely happening here. The IRS verification process has multiple stages: 1. Initial submission verification (basic identity check) 2. Income/wage verification (comparing what you reported vs. what employers reported) 3. Credit verification (for certain credits claimed) You likely completed step 1 online, but now they're asking for step 2 or 3. Here's what to do: 1. Check the letter number (top right corner) 2. Respond to the new letter exactly as instructed 3. If calling, mention you already completed the online verification 4. Ask specifically which verification this new letter is for Don't worry - this is frustrating but normal this year. Your refund isn't lost, just delayed.

According to IRS Publication 5027 on Identity Theft Information for Taxpayers, you should respond to each verification request separately. As a contractor myself, I've found we get extra scrutiny because our income reporting is more complex. The IRS has been implementing new verification procedures under IRC §6103(c) which allows for multiple verification steps. I suggest keeping copies of all verification confirmations and requesting a Taxpayer Advocate if this continues beyond the second verification.
