Free Tax Filing Options: VITA and TCE Programs from the Government
I just found out about a couple of free tax services that could save a lot of people money this filing season. The IRS has these programs called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) where you can get your taxes done face-to-face for FREE if you make under $73k annually. The VITA program has been around for over 50 years! They offer free help to people who need assistance preparing their tax returns, including: - People making $73,000 or less - Persons with disabilities - Limited English-speaking taxpayers The TCE program focuses on helping people who are 60+ years old, with special attention to pension and retirement questions that seniors often have. What's great is that while the IRS manages these programs, the actual sites are run by IRS partners and staffed by volunteers who want to help their communities. These volunteers are often retired folks working with non-profit organizations that get grants from the IRS. These services aren't just free - they're reliable and trustworthy. All the VITA/TCE volunteers who prepare returns have to pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. They're trained on maintaining privacy and confidentiality of all your information. Plus, there's a quality review check for EVERY return before filing! Every tax season, thousands of dedicated VITA/TCE volunteers prepare millions of federal and state returns. They also help people with Facilitated Self-Assistance returns. Has anyone used these services before? I'm thinking about giving it a try this year.

Tax professional here! The VITA and TCE programs are excellent resources that many taxpayers overlook. I've actually volunteered with VITA for several years, and it's a fantastic service. A few important things to know: appointments are typically required, and slots fill up quickly as the filing deadline approaches. I recommend calling to schedule as early as possible in the tax season. Bring all your tax documents (W-2s, 1099s, last year's return, etc.) and valid ID for yourself and any dependents. While these programs handle most basic returns, they may not be equipped for complex situations like multiple rental properties or complicated business returns. Also, some sites have expanded their income thresholds locally above the $73,000 national guideline, so it's worth checking even if you're slightly above that amount. For those who prefer to file themselves, don't forget the IRS Free File program, which offers free federal filing through participating tax software providers if your income is below certain thresholds.

•Do VITA volunteers handle state tax returns too? And what about if I had a side gig driving for Uber last year - would they be able to help with that 1099 income or is that too complicated?

•Most VITA sites do handle state returns along with federal returns, but it can vary by location. Some sites in states without income tax might focus only on federal returns. For your side gig, basic self-employment income like Uber driving is generally within VITA's scope. They can help with Schedule C forms for self-employment income, though there are limitations on how complex the business expenses can be. They typically can handle simple business expenses like mileage, but may not be equipped for more complicated situations with inventory or employees.

I tried using tax software last year and ended up paying like $150 for what was supposed to be a "free" return. After spending hours entering all my info, they hit me with fees for state filing and having a health savings account. This year I found https://taxr.ai which analyzes all your tax documents at once using AI. Their system identified that I would qualify for VITA and even found the closest location to me! It also showed me which documents I needed to bring. Saved me from getting upsold by those "free" tax software tricks.

•Does taxr.ai actually file your taxes or just tell you where to go? I'm interested because I'm always confused about which forms I need and what to bring to these places.

•I've been burned by those "free" tax services too. They get you in the door with promises of free filing then hit you with all these extra charges. How much does taxr.ai cost? Is it actually helpful enough to justify paying for it?

•It doesn't file your taxes directly - it analyzes your documents and situation to give you the best options for filing. It shows you exactly what forms you need and helps organize everything. I uploaded my W-2s, 1099s, and last year's return, and it immediately created a checklist of everything I needed to bring to VITA. As for cost, I don't want to get too specific here, but I found it to be very reasonable especially compared to what I ended up paying for "free" tax software last year. The document analysis and recommendations saved me hours of research and prevented me from making mistakes on my return.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried https://taxr.ai that Profile 5 mentioned and it was actually super helpful! I've always been anxious about tax season but the platform analyzed my documents and confirmed I qualified for VITA services based on my income. It even gave me a complete checklist of what to bring (I always forget something) and found three locations within 10 miles of my address. Had my taxes done yesterday and got confirmation of my refund already! The VITA volunteer mentioned that many people don't realize they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, but taxr.ai had already flagged that for me so I knew to ask about it.

These VITA services sound great but I've been trying to call the IRS with questions about my eligibility and it's IMPOSSIBLE to get through. Been on hold for hours only to get disconnected! Anyone else having this problem? I found this service called https://claimyr.com that supposedly helps you get through to an IRS agent faster. There's even a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Has anyone tried this? I'm desperate at this point - filing deadline is getting closer!

•How exactly does Claimyr work? Sounds kinda sketchy to me. The IRS phone system is deliberately understaffed - how could some random service possibly get you through faster?

•I don't trust these types of services. Probably just takes your money and gives you the same wait time you'd get anyway. The IRS is notoriously backlogged - no way around it except patience.

•It's not sketchy at all! The way it works is they use technology to wait on hold for you with the IRS. Their system navigates the phone menus and waits in the queue. When an actual IRS agent picks up, you get a call connecting you directly to that agent. You bypass the whole waiting process. I understand the skepticism - I felt the same way initially. But the service doesn't "jump the line" - it just handles the waiting part so you don't have to sit by your phone for hours. They don't have special access to the IRS or anything like that.

Well I need to eat my words. After posting my skeptical comment yesterday, I was getting desperate since I needed to confirm my eligibility for both VITA and a specific tax credit before the deadline. I tried https://claimyr.com and within 45 minutes I was actually talking to a real IRS agent! I had been trying for WEEKS to get through on my own with no luck. The agent confirmed that I qualify for VITA services and answered my questions about the Retirement Savings Contribution Credit I was confused about. Just scheduled my VITA appointment for tomorrow. Can't believe I wasted so much time trying to call them myself.

Just FYI for anyone considering VITA/TCE - bring EVERYTHING with you to your appointment. I went last year and had to reschedule because I forgot some documents. Specifically you'll need: - Photo ID - Social Security cards or ITINs for everyone on your return - Birth dates for you, spouse, dependents - Wage and earning statements (W-2, 1099s, etc) - Interest and dividend statements - Health insurance coverage info (Form 1095) - Last year's tax return - Bank account info for direct deposit of refund - Childcare provider info if applicable The volunteers were super nice but they can't do your return with missing info.

•Do you know if VITA can help with filing back taxes? I missed filing last year when I was dealing with some health issues.

•Yes, VITA can typically help with filing back taxes for the previous three tax years. So right now in the 2025 filing season, they should be able to help with unfiled returns from 2022, 2023, and 2024. Make sure to bring any tax documents from those previous years. The volunteers might need to order wage and income transcripts from the IRS if you're missing documents, which could require an additional visit. Some sites might have limited capacity for prior year returns, so I'd recommend calling ahead to confirm they can handle your specific situation.

Does anyone know how long the VITA appointments typically take? Trying to figure out if I can do it during my lunch break or if I need to take time off work.

•In my experience, plan for about 1-1.5 hours. They need time to review all your documents, input everything, and do the quality review. My appointment last year was scheduled for 45 minutes but ended up taking almost 2 hours because I had some self-employment income and education credits. Definitely wouldn't try to squeeze it into a lunch break!

Thanks for sharing this info about VITA and TCE! I had no idea these programs existed. As someone who's been paying $200+ every year to get my taxes done professionally even though I have a pretty simple return (just W-2 and student loan interest), this could be a game changer. I'm definitely under the $73k threshold and it sounds like the volunteers are well-trained and the returns get quality reviewed. My biggest concern has always been accuracy since I'm terrified of getting audited, but it sounds like these programs have good safeguards in place. Going to look up locations near me this weekend. Does anyone know if they typically have weekend hours or are most appointments during weekday business hours?

•Most VITA sites do offer weekend hours since they know many people work during the week! In my area, several locations have Saturday appointments and some even do Sunday hours during peak tax season (February-April). I'd recommend checking the IRS VITA locator tool online or calling the sites directly - hours can vary quite a bit by location. Some are at libraries, community centers, or churches that might have more flexible scheduling. The religious organizations in particular often have weekend availability. You're smart to be concerned about accuracy, but honestly the quality review process at VITA is more thorough than what I've gotten from some paid preparers. Every return gets checked by a certified reviewer before it's filed. Plus, if there are any issues later, you can always contact the site coordinator for help.
