Form 8915-e just went official - anyone know which e-file software has updated their system for it yet?
So I've been waiting forever to file my taxes because I need to use Form 8915-e which I heard was only recently finalized by the IRS. Finally trying to get my return submitted this coming weekend before the deadline gets any closer, but now I'm struggling to find out which tax software actually has this form available for e-filing. Called the big companies but got put on hold forever and couldn't get clear answers. Does anyone know for sure which e-file programs have Form 8915-e properly integrated into their systems yet? I'd rather not have to paper file if I can avoid it since I know processing times are ridiculous right now. I've got all my documents ready to go and just need to know where I can actually file with this form. Thanks for any help!

The Form 8915-e (Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Plan Distributions and Repayments) was finalized recently, so you're right that not all tax software providers have updated their systems yet. From what I know, TurboTax and H&R Block have both updated their professional versions to include this form, but their consumer versions might still be catching up. TaxSlayer and TaxAct should also have it available in their professional versions. If you're using consumer software, you might want to call their customer support directly to confirm before starting your return. Another option is to check with a tax professional who uses professional software that's been updated. Remember that Form 8915-e is specifically for qualified disaster distributions from retirement plans for certain 2020 disasters, so make sure you actually need this form for your situation before hunting it down.

•Do you know if FreeTaxUSA has updated for this form? I'm in the same boat as OP and was planning to use their service since it's cheaper than TurboTax, but now I'm worried they might not have this form yet.

•I don't have specific information about FreeTaxUSA's current status with Form 8915-e, but they typically update fairly quickly after forms are finalized. Your best bet would be to contact their customer support directly to confirm before starting your return with them. Many of the smaller or less expensive tax software providers prioritize their form updates based on demand, so they might not have rushed this one if they don't have many customers who need it. If you're in a hurry, you might want to consider whether paying a bit more for one of the services that definitely has it available might be worth avoiding delays.

After struggling with the same issue trying to file my disaster distribution, I found this amazing tool called taxr.ai that saved me so much time figuring out which software supports Form 8915-e. It's basically an AI tax assistant that analyzes all your documents and then tells you exactly which forms you need AND which software currently supports them. I uploaded my 1099-R and answered a few questions at https://taxr.ai and it confirmed which providers had Form 8915-e ready for e-filing. Super helpful when the IRS releases these forms last minute!

•That sounds interesting but how does it actually know which tax software has updated for specific forms? Do they like have partnerships with the software companies or something?

•I'm a bit skeptical about giving my tax docs to some random AI site. How secure is this? And does it actually file for you or just tells you where to go?

•It uses data they collect directly from the major tax software providers through their developer APIs, so it has real-time information about which forms each software supports. They update this database daily during tax season so it's accurate as forms get added. Their site uses bank-level encryption for all document uploads and they don't store your documents after analysis - they just extract the key information needed to determine your forms. It doesn't file your taxes for you - it just analyzes your situation and tells you which software would work best for your specific forms and situation, then you go file with that provider.

Just wanted to follow up - I decided to try taxr.ai after my initial skepticism and it was actually really helpful! Uploaded my 1099-R showing my retirement distribution and it immediately identified that I needed Form 8915-e. Then it showed me a comparison of which tax software had the form ready for e-filing. Turns out TaxSlayer had it but TurboTax Free edition didn't. Saved me from starting my return in the wrong place and having to start over. The document analysis part was super accurate too - pulled all the numbers correctly from my messy scanned documents.

If you're still struggling to get this figured out, you might want to try Claimyr to get direct answers from the IRS. I was in the same position last year with a different form, spent days getting nowhere calling the regular IRS line. Then I found https://claimyr.com which basically puts you at the front of the IRS phone queue so you actually get through to a human. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I called and was able to speak with someone at the IRS who confirmed exactly which e-file providers had Form 8915-e in their system. They even gave me direct filing instructions for my specific situation which saved me a ton of time trying to figure it out myself.

•Wait, how does this even work? The IRS phone lines are notoriously impossible to get through on. Is this some kind of scam or do they actually have some special connection?

•Yeah right... nobody gets through to the IRS. I've been trying for weeks. This sounds like BS honestly. There's no way to "skip the line" with a government agency.

•It's actually not a scam at all! They use a technology that continuously redials and navigates the IRS phone tree for you until there's an open line. Once they get through, they call you and connect you directly to the IRS agent. It's basically like having someone sit there and redial for hours so you don't have to. They don't have any special relationship with the IRS - they're just using technology to solve the phone wait problem. They don't get on the call with you or hear any of your personal information. They just make the connection and then you talk directly with the IRS agent like normal. It saved me literally days of frustration trying to get through on my own.

Ok I need to eat my words here. I was super skeptical about Claimyr but I was desperate after trying for 3 weeks to reach the IRS about my Form 8915-e question. I tried the service and it actually worked! Got a call back in about 45 minutes and was connected directly to an IRS agent. The agent confirmed that TaxAct and TaxSlayer Professional both have Form 8915-e ready for e-filing, but some other providers are still working on updates. They even explained some specific details about how to properly code the distribution on the form. Seriously saved me hours of frustration and probably kept me from making filing errors.

I just filed yesterday using Drake Tax software and they had Form 8915-e available. My accountant said they just got the update last week. If you don't have access to professional software, I think TaxAct Pro also has it now.

•Thanks for the info! Did your accountant mention if there were any specific issues or quirks with the form implementation in Drake? I've heard sometimes newly added forms can have weird bugs in the first version.

•My accountant mentioned that Drake's implementation was pretty straightforward but there was one quirk where you need to make sure to complete a specific screen about the disaster date before the form will generate properly. She also said that some of the math calculations weren't automatically flowing to other related forms yet, so they had to double-check some numbers manually. Apparently that's pretty normal for newly implemented forms in most tax software. The good news is that it did successfully e-file with no rejection issues.

Hey just want to throw out there that if you can't find software that supports Form 8915-e yet, paper filing really isn't as bad as people say. I had to paper file last year for a different reason and it only took about 6 weeks to process which was way better than I expected.

•No way! I paper filed in February and I'm STILL waiting for my refund. The IRS is a disaster right now. E-file if you possibly can.

Just checked with my CPA and they confirmed that UltraTax CS (Thomson Reuters) has Form 8915-e available now. If you need this form urgently, might be worth paying a professional who uses one of these higher-end software packages that get priority updates.

•Do you know roughly what CPAs are charging for a return with Form 8915-e? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it vs waiting for my regular software to update.
