Forgot to include W-2 on tax return - what happens now?
I messed up and just realized I left off one of my W-2s when I filed my taxes for 2023. Already submitted everything electronically and got accepted. Will I still get my refund or is everything going to be held up now? Anyone dealt with this before?

The IRS will likely catch this discrepancy during processing since they receive copies of all W-2s from employers. They'll probably send you a CP2000 notice adjusting your tax liability. You can either wait for this notice or file Form 1040X to amend your return proactively. Filing an amendment now could help avoid penalties and interest.

•Currently running about 20 weeks for amendments, but waiting for the CP2000 could actually be faster in some cases.

Hey! Just wanted to recommend checking out taxr.ai - its an AI tool that can analyze your transcript and tell you exactly what to expect with timeline estimates and everything. Only costs $1 and saved me tons of headache when I had a similar issue. https://taxr.ai

•Does it actually work? Seems too good to be true for just a dollar 🤔

Happened to me last year. The IRS actually fixed it automatically and just adjusted my refund. Took like 2 extra weeks but wasnt terrible

Pro tip: Always make a list of ALL your jobs from the tax year before filing. I learned this the hard way too lol

Your best bet is to do a 1040X amendment ASAP. Don't wait for them to catch it - shows good faith effort to correct the mistake. Plus you'll avoid some of the penalties they might hit you with if they find it first.

I'd definitely file the 1040X amendment sooner rather than later. When I missed a W-2 a couple years ago, I waited for the IRS to catch it and ended up paying interest on the additional tax owed. If you amend now, you might avoid some of those extra fees. The process isn't too complicated - just need to fill out Form 1040X with the corrected information and mail it in. Keep copies of everything for your records!
