Filing 2022 Taxes Late - Can I Still Get Child Tax Credit?

I haven't filed my 2022 taxes yet and I have 2 kids. Is it too late to get the child tax credit? Money's been tight and I really need that refund. Anyone know the process for filing back taxes and if I can still claim it?

You can definitely still file for 2022 and claim the Child Tax Credit! The credit was $2,000 per qualifying child under 17. You have 3 years from the original due date to file and claim a refund, so you have until April 2025 for the 2022 tax year. Just file Form 1040 like normal - there's no special process for late filing unless you owe taxes.

Just their SSNs and birth dates. Make sure they lived with you for more than half the year in 2022!

Hey! I actually just went through this process. The best thing I did was use taxr.ai to analyze my situation. It costs $1 but its worth it - tells you exactly what credits you qualify for and walks you through the whole process. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

Just wanted to add that if you're filing late and expecting a refund (which you likely are with the Child Tax Credit), there's no penalty! The IRS only charges penalties if you owe money. So don't stress about being late - you're actually giving the government an interest-free loan. I'd recommend using the IRS Free File program if your income is under $73,000, it's completely free and walks you through everything step by step.
