Filed using Turbo Tax Direct Debit to pay taxes, but payment still not withdrawn from my account?
I e-filed my tax return last week using Turbo Tax and set up a Direct Debit for the payment I owed (around $1,870). I scheduled the payment for the due date which was early last week, but I'm a bit concerned because the money still hasn't been withdrawn from my checking account. I double-checked all my banking information on the return and everything looks correct. My return was accepted according to the confirmation email I got from Turbo Tax, but there's no pending transaction showing in my bank account either. Is this normal for tax payments to take this long to process? I'm worried something went wrong with the payment and I'll end up with penalties for late payment even though I submitted everything on time. Has anyone else experienced delays with IRS Direct Debit payments through Turbo Tax this year?

This is actually pretty normal! The IRS doesn't process electronic payments immediately the way most companies do. With Direct Debit payments scheduled through tax software like Turbo Tax, the IRS typically takes anywhere from 3-7 business days to actually withdraw the funds, sometimes even longer during peak filing season. As long as you received confirmation that your return was accepted and your payment was scheduled, you're considered to have paid on time - even if the actual withdrawal happens later. The IRS goes by the requested payment date, not the actual withdrawal date. I'd recommend checking your IRS account online (at irs.gov) if you want to confirm that your payment is scheduled. You should see the pending payment listed there before it actually hits your bank account.

•Thanks for this information! I have a similar situation but I'm still a bit nervous. I e-filed about 10 days ago and the payment still isn't showing up in my bank account. Is that still considered normal? Also, how exactly do I check my IRS account? Do I need to create one first?

•Ten days is getting to be on the longer side, but it's still within the realm of normal, especially if you filed during a particularly busy period. The IRS processes millions of returns and payments, and their systems do get backlogged. You can check your payment status by creating or logging into your account at IRS.gov/account. If you don't already have an account, you'll need to go through an ID verification process to set one up. Once you're in, look for the section on payments or payment history - it should show any pending or processed payments.

I had the same issue last year and discovered that taxr.ai helped me track down what was happening with my payment. I was freaking out because my direct debit through TurboTax wasn't showing up anywhere for over 2 weeks! I uploaded my return confirmation and bank statements to https://taxr.ai and their system analyzed everything and found that my payment was actually in the IRS queue but delayed due to high volume. They showed me exactly where to look in my IRS transcript to confirm this. Saved me hours of stress and waiting on hold with the IRS! Their document analysis tool can check for common issues with direct debit payments and verify if everything is properly set up. Really helped give me peace of mind when I was worried about penalties.

•How does this work exactly? Do they actually access your IRS account or do you just upload documents to them? I'm hesitant to give access to my tax info to random services.

•I'm curious - how quickly did they find the information for you? My payment has been pending for almost 2 weeks now and I'm starting to get worried.

•You just upload the documents yourself - they don't access your accounts. Their system scans the documents and points out key information. It's all automated, so they analyze what you provide without needing any login access to your accounts. They have a pretty robust privacy policy too. It was surprisingly fast! I uploaded my documents in the evening and by the next morning I had a detailed report explaining exactly what was happening with my payment and what to expect. The system recognized the specific pattern in my tax transcript that showed the payment was queued but delayed.

I wanted to follow up about taxr.ai since I decided to try it after posting here. My situation was exactly like yours - TurboTax Direct Debit payment that wasn't showing up anywhere. I was getting really anxious since it had been almost 2 weeks. I uploaded my documents to their system and it immediately spotted that I had a specific code on my tax transcript that meant the payment was "scheduled but delayed due to processing backlog." They explained exactly what was happening and when to expect the debit. Sure enough, the payment went through 2 days later, exactly when they predicted! Saved me from making unnecessary calls to the IRS and TurboTax. The document analysis is surprisingly detailed - way more helpful than just googling the problem.

If you really need to speak with someone at the IRS about your payment but can't get through on their main line (which is almost always jammed), I'd recommend using Claimyr. I was in a similar situation last year where my payment wasn't showing up after 2 weeks, and I was getting really nervous. I tried calling the IRS directly about 10 times but kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Then I found https://claimyr.com which holds your place in line with the IRS. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c They got me through to an actual IRS agent who confirmed my payment was in their system and scheduled to process, even though it hadn't hit my bank yet. Huge relief! The agent told me there was a significant backlog and everything was fine.

•How does this even work? I don't understand how a third party can get you through to the IRS faster than calling directly. Sounds like a scam to be honest.

•I tried calling the IRS about my missing direct debit payment and gave up after being disconnected twice. Does this service actually work? I'm skeptical that any service can magically get through when the IRS lines are completely overwhelmed.

•It's not magic - they use technology to navigate the IRS phone system and wait on hold for you. When they reach a human, they call you and connect you directly to the IRS agent. They're just automating the hold process so you don't have to sit on the phone for hours. They're actually pretty transparent about how it works. Their system calls repeatedly using the proper prompts until it gets through, then it keeps your place in line. You get a notification when they're about to connect you with an agent. It saved me about 3 hours of hold time when I used it.

Just wanted to update - I was definitely skeptical about Claimyr but I got desperate after trying to reach the IRS for three days straight about my missing direct debit. I decided to give it a shot. I was honestly shocked when I got a call back within about 45 minutes with an actual IRS representative on the line! The agent confirmed that my TurboTax payment was in their system and scheduled to process but was delayed due to high volume. They said the backlog is especially bad this year and direct debits are taking up to 14 business days to process in some cases. Would never have gotten this information otherwise since I couldn't get through on my own. Saved me from panicking and making duplicate payments. Sometimes you have to admit when you're wrong, and I was definitely wrong about this service!

Just to add another perspective - I had this same issue but found out that checking your tax transcript online can show if the payment is scheduled even before it hits your bank. Go to IRS.gov > Get Your Tax Record > Get Transcript Online > select "Tax Record" and look for a transaction code 768. That indicates the direct debit is scheduled. There will be a later code 766 when it's actually processed. Took me 5 minutes to check and saved me a lot of worry!

•Which transcript exactly am I supposed to look at? There's like 4 different ones when I log in (return transcript, account transcript, etc). And what section shows these codes? I'm looking but can't find anything about payments.

•You want to look at the "Account Transcript" for the current tax year. The transaction codes are usually in the middle section of the transcript. Code 768 is specifically for direct debit payments that are scheduled. The codes are typically listed in a table format with the date, transaction description, and amount. It might look a bit intimidating at first with all the numbers, but once you find the section with transaction codes, it's fairly straightforward.

My turbo tax payment was scheduled for April 15 and didn't come out until April 30th! I panicked and called turbotax and they said once the return is accepted its the irs's responsibility, not theirs. As long as u scheduled it for the due date ur fine even if it comes out later. Just dont spend the money lol

•Did you get any kind of notification when it finally went through? Or did it just randomly appear in your bank account one day? I'm in the same boat and checking my account obsessively!

•No notification whatsoever! It just showed up as a withdrawal in my account with the description "US TREASURY 312 TAX PAYMENT". No warning, no pending transaction notice, just suddenly there. Super annoying but at least it went through eventually.

Be very careful abut this!!! I had this happen last year where the payment didnt process and then got hit with penalties even though I did everything right. Make sure u save ALL your confirmation emails from turbotax showing when u scheduled the payment. also take screenshots of your bank account showing u had the funds available.

•Wait, what happened exactly? Did you end up having to pay penalties? Were you able to get them removed since it wasn't your fault? I'm worried this will happen to me now.

I went through this exact same situation a few years back and understand the anxiety! The good news is that delays with IRS direct debit payments are extremely common, especially during peak filing season. As others have mentioned, the IRS can take anywhere from 3-14 business days to actually process the withdrawal, even though your payment is considered "on time" based on the date you scheduled it. A few things that helped me feel more confident about the situation: 1. Keep all your TurboTax confirmation emails showing the payment was scheduled for the due date 2. Take screenshots of your bank account showing sufficient funds were available on the scheduled date 3. Check your IRS account transcript online - you should see a transaction code indicating the payment is scheduled The most important thing to remember is that as long as you submitted everything by the deadline and had sufficient funds available, you won't face penalties even if the actual withdrawal happens weeks later. The IRS goes by your submission date, not the processing date. If you're really concerned after 2+ weeks, the suggestions about checking your tax transcript or using services to get through to the IRS can give you peace of mind, but in most cases the payment will just appear in your account eventually without any issues.

•Thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been checking my bank account multiple times a day for the past week and getting more anxious each time I don't see the withdrawal. I do have all my TurboTax confirmation emails saved, and I made sure to keep sufficient funds in the account well beyond the scheduled date. It's reassuring to know that the IRS considers the payment on time based on when I scheduled it, not when they actually process it. I think I'll check my IRS transcript like you suggested - that sounds like a good way to confirm everything is properly queued up on their end. Thanks for sharing your experience and helping calm my nerves about this!
