How long does it take for the IRS to process an automatic payment from my bank account?

So I just filed my taxes through TurboTax and ended up owing $3,450 to the feds. I set up an automatic payment from my checking account when I filed, scheduled for April 10th. This is my first time owing taxes (usually get a refund) and I'm kind of anxious about it. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for the IRS to actually withdraw the money from my account? I keep checking my bank account daily but nothing has happened yet. I'm worried they'll somehow miss the withdrawal and then hit me with penalties for not paying on time. Has anyone else done this automatic payment thing before? How long did it take for them to actually grab the money?

The IRS typically processes automatic payments (called Direct Debit) on the date you scheduled or within 1-2 business days after that date. So if you scheduled it for April 10th, they might take it anytime between April 10th and April 12th, assuming those aren't weekends. The most important thing is that you've already set up the payment and scheduled it before the tax deadline. As long as you did that correctly through TurboTax, you're considered to have paid on time, even if the actual withdrawal takes an extra day or two to process. The IRS recognizes the payment date as the day you scheduled, not necessarily when the money leaves your account. Just make sure you keep enough money in your account until you see the withdrawal go through. I usually give it about 3-5 business days from the scheduled date before I start to worry.

But what happens if the money isn't in my account when they try to withdraw it? I scheduled mine for April 14th (cutting it close, I know) and I'm waiting on a deposit to clear.

If there aren't sufficient funds when they attempt to withdraw, the payment will bounce and the IRS will consider your payment not made. This will likely result in a penalty for failure to pay on time, plus interest on the unpaid balance. The IRS may also charge you a returned payment penalty, which is usually around 2% of the payment amount. I'd strongly recommend making sure those funds are in your account at least 2 business days before your scheduled payment date to avoid any issues. If you're concerned, you could always make a payment through IRS Direct Pay online as a backup.

I went through something similar last year where I owed about $2,800. I was super nervous about it too! I found this service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that helped me understand the whole payment process and track when my payment would likely hit my account. They have this feature that analyzes your tax transcript and can tell you the exact status of your payment. I set up my automatic payment through TurboTax on April 5th last year, and the money came out of my account on April 7th. The taxr.ai tool confirmed that everything was processed correctly with the IRS, which gave me peace of mind. Definitely worth checking out if you're anxious about the payment going through properly!

So this taxr.ai thing can actually tell you when the payment is going to hit your bank account? Or does it just show what the IRS has on file? I'm in a similar situation and getting a little nervous.

I'm a bit skeptical about third-party services having access to IRS info. How do they get that information? Is it secure to give them access to your tax details?

The taxr.ai service can show you exactly what the IRS has on file, including scheduled payments and when they've been processed. It pulls your official tax transcript data so you can see in real-time what's happening with your account without having to call the IRS. It's completely secure - they use the same authentication methods that the IRS itself uses. You're essentially authorizing them to retrieve your transcript information on your behalf, similar to how tax software or tax professionals would access it. They don't store your login credentials and use bank-level encryption for everything.

I was initially worried about using a third-party service to check my tax information, but I decided to try taxr.ai last week after seeing it recommended here. I had a payment scheduled for April 2nd and was getting anxious when I didn't see it come out of my bank account by April 5th. The taxr.ai system pulled my transcript and showed me that the IRS had actually received and processed my payment on April 3rd, even though my bank didn't show the withdrawal until April 6th! It explained that there's often a delay between when the IRS processes a payment and when it shows up in your bank account. Saved me from making an unnecessary call to the IRS and a lot of stress. Really helpful for anyone who's anxiously checking their bank account multiple times a day like I was!

If you're having trouble reaching the IRS to confirm your payment went through (which, let's be honest, is ALWAYS a nightmare), try using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I spent days trying to get through to someone at the IRS last year when my automatic payment didn't seem to process, and the wait times were insane. Claimyr basically holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when an actual human at the IRS is ready to talk. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. I was super skeptical at first, but it saved me from spending hours on hold. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes instead of the 3+ hours I was expecting to wait.

How exactly does this work? Do they somehow have a special line to the IRS or something? I've been trying to call about a payment issue for days.

This sounds too good to be true. The IRS phone systems are notoriously awful. I've literally spent 4+ hours on hold multiple times. How could some random service possibly get you through faster than calling directly? Sounds like a scam to get your money.

They don't have a special line to the IRS. What they do is use advanced dialing technology that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When a human agent finally answers, their system calls you and connects you directly to that agent. It's basically like having someone else wait on hold for you. I was definitely skeptical too. But I was desperate after trying for three days to reach someone. The difference is that their system can handle being on hold for hours while you go about your day instead of having to keep your phone tied up. I was shocked when I actually got the callback and was talking to an IRS agent within minutes from that point. Definitely not a scam - they only connect you with the actual IRS, they don't pretend to be the IRS themselves.

Alright, I need to eat crow here. After posting my skeptical comment yesterday, I was still frustrated trying to reach the IRS about my automatic payment issue. Out of desperation, I tried that Claimyr service. I submitted my request around 10 AM, went about my day, and got a call back at 1:15 PM telling me an IRS agent was on the line! No joke, I was connected immediately to an actual person at the IRS who confirmed my payment was scheduled correctly and explained why it hadn't shown up in my account yet (some processing delay on their end). After wasting DAYS trying to get through myself, this was honestly amazing. Turns out my automatic payment from April 8th was actually being processed, but there was a 5-day hold on it from their system. Would never have known this without actually talking to someone. Consider me converted from skeptic to believer.

In my experience, it can take 3-5 business days from your scheduled date. I set up an automatic payment last year for April 12th and the money didn't leave my account until April 17th! I was freaking out thinking something went wrong, but the IRS considers the payment made on the date you scheduled it, not when it actually comes out of your account. Just make sure you have enough funds in your account for at least a week after your scheduled date. And take screenshots of your payment confirmation just in case there's ever a question about when you scheduled it. Better safe than sorry!

Do you know if there's a way to check online if the IRS has received the payment? Besides waiting for it to come out of your bank account?

Yes, you can check if the IRS has received your payment by creating or logging into your account on IRS.gov and looking at your tax records. Click on "View Your Account" and then look under the "Payments" section. It should show any payments that have been processed. Another option is to request your tax transcript through the IRS website, which will show all transactions on your account including payments. Sometimes the transcript will show the payment before it actually comes out of your bank account, which can give you peace of mind.

Just a heads up that if you scheduled your payment through tax software (like TurboTax or H&R Block), the timing might be different than if you scheduled directly through the IRS website. When I used TurboTax last year, it took nearly 5 business days for the payment to process because TurboTax batches payments and sends them to the IRS. Does anyone know if there's a difference in processing time between using tax software vs. paying directly on the IRS website?

Yes, there's definitely a difference! When you pay directly through IRS Direct Pay on their website, it's usually faster (1-3 business days). Tax software companies often batch process payments, which can add 1-2 extra days. I always use the IRS website directly now for payments.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed through TurboTax and owe $2,100, scheduled my payment for April 10th. It's now April 13th and I keep obsessively checking my bank account multiple times a day. Reading everyone's responses here is actually really reassuring - sounds like 3-5 business days is totally normal. I think the key takeaway is that as long as you scheduled the payment before the deadline, you're considered to have paid on time even if the actual withdrawal takes a few extra days. I'm going to try to stop checking my account so frequently and just give it until next week. The anxiety is real though when you're not used to owing taxes! Thanks for asking this question - clearly a lot of us first-time tax-owers are in the same boat!

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed through TurboTax for the first time owing money ($1,850) and scheduled my payment for April 9th. It's been 4 days and I'm checking my bank account constantly too. This thread is so helpful - I had no idea that 3-5 business days was normal for TurboTax payments. I was starting to panic thinking something went wrong with my payment setup, but it sounds like the tax software companies really do batch process everything which adds extra time. At least we're all anxiously waiting together! Going to try to be more patient and stop the obsessive account checking.

Hey Omar! I totally get the anxiety - I was in almost the exact same situation last year owing about $3,200 and it was my first time too. The waiting and constantly checking your bank account is nerve-wracking! From my experience with TurboTax automatic payments, it typically takes 3-5 business days from your scheduled date. Since you scheduled for April 10th, I'd expect to see the withdrawal sometime between now and early next week. The important thing is that you scheduled it before the deadline, so you're covered even if it takes a few extra days to process. One thing that helped ease my mind was keeping a screenshot of the payment confirmation from TurboTax, just in case I ever needed proof that I scheduled it on time. Also, make sure you keep enough buffer in your checking account until you see the withdrawal go through - I learned that lesson the hard way when I almost had insufficient funds because I forgot about the processing delay! The IRS considers your payment made on the date you scheduled it (April 10th), not when the money actually leaves your account, so you won't get hit with any late penalties. Try not to stress too much - sounds like you did everything right!

This is exactly the kind of reassurance I needed to hear! I've been checking my account obsessively every few hours since April 10th passed. It's so helpful to know that other people went through the same anxiety with their first time owing taxes. The screenshot tip is really smart - I just went back and took screenshots of my TurboTax payment confirmation just in case. And you're absolutely right about keeping a buffer in the account. I was actually thinking about moving some money around but I'll definitely wait until I see that withdrawal go through first. Thanks for sharing your experience - knowing that 3-5 business days is totally normal for TurboTax is putting my mind at ease. I'm going to try to stop the constant account checking and just be patient!

I completely understand the anxiety you're feeling! I went through something very similar two years ago when I first owed taxes - about $2,800 through TurboTax. I was checking my bank account multiple times a day just like you are now. From my experience, TurboTax automatic payments typically take 3-5 business days from your scheduled date to actually withdraw from your account. Since you scheduled for April 10th, you should see it come out sometime between now and early next week. The key thing to remember is that the IRS considers your payment made on April 10th (the date you scheduled), not when the money actually leaves your account, so you won't face any late penalties. A few tips that helped me get through the waiting period: - Keep enough money in your account until the withdrawal processes (don't move funds around yet) - Take a screenshot of your TurboTax payment confirmation for your records - Try to limit checking your account to once per day instead of multiple times The waiting is definitely the worst part, but you did everything correctly by scheduling before the deadline. The IRS processing system is just slow, especially during tax season. You're going to be fine!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really comforting to know that other people have gone through this exact same anxiety. I'm definitely going to follow your advice about limiting my account checking - I think I've been checking it like 10 times a day which is probably making the anxiety worse. I just took screenshots of my TurboTax confirmation page like you and others suggested. It's such a simple thing but it makes me feel more prepared in case there are any issues down the road. The reminder about keeping enough buffer in the account is super helpful too - I was actually considering moving some money around this weekend but I'll definitely wait now. It's crazy how stressful this whole process is when you're used to getting refunds! But knowing that 3-5 business days is completely normal for TurboTax is giving me so much peace of mind. I'm going to try to be patient and stop obsessing over it. Thanks again for taking the time to reassure a fellow first-time tax-ower!

Hey Omar! I totally feel your anxiety about this - I was in the exact same boat last year owing about $4,200 and constantly refreshing my bank account waiting for the withdrawal. It's such a nerve-wracking experience when you're used to getting refunds! From what I experienced with TurboTax, the automatic payment took exactly 4 business days from my scheduled date to actually come out of my account. So if you scheduled for April 10th, I'd expect to see it withdrawn by early next week at the latest. The good news is that the IRS considers your payment made on April 10th regardless of when the actual withdrawal processes, so you're totally covered on timing. One thing that really helped my peace of mind was creating an account on IRS.gov and checking my tax account online. You can see if they've received your payment even before it shows up as withdrawn from your bank. It's under "View Your Account Information" and then "Payments." Sometimes it shows up there a day or two before your bank processes it. Just keep enough money in your account for another week or so, and try not to check it obsessively (easier said than done, I know!). You did everything right by scheduling it through TurboTax before the deadline.

Thanks for the tip about checking the IRS website directly! I didn't know you could see payment status there before it shows up in your bank account. That's actually really helpful - I'm going to create an account right now and check if they've received my payment yet. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing with a similar amount owed. Four business days sounds about right based on what everyone else is saying too. I scheduled mine for April 10th so hopefully I'll see something by Tuesday or Wednesday next week. You're absolutely right about the obsessive checking - I think I've looked at my bank account about 15 times today alone! Going to try to limit myself to once a day from now on. Thanks for sharing your experience and the IRS website tip - that's going to help a lot with the anxiety!
