Filed Jan 2024, Amended June 2024 for Missing 1099-R - Why Did My 'As Of' Date Change to July 1?
I filed my taxes on January 29th and just amended on June 22nd because I realized a 1099-R was missing. The missing form doesn't change my refund amount at all. Here's what's weird - my 2022 transcript suddenly shows an 'as of date' changed to July 1, 2024. Does this mean they're looking at that return now? What's going on? I'm confused about why they'd be looking at my 2022 return when I amended my 2023 taxes.

The 'as of date' on your transcript is basically the IRS's way of saying "we touched your file on this date" 😂. When you filed that amendment, it likely triggered their system to review your account as a whole, not just the specific year you amended. The computer probably did a quick check across multiple tax years to make sure everything lines up. I was surprised too when I learned the IRS doesn't just look at one tax year in isolation - they're actually pretty sophisticated in how they cross-reference your tax history!

This makes sense! Do you know if the IRS website shows anywhere specifically that they're processing the amendment? I've been checking the "Where's My Amended Return" tool but it still says nothing.

I appreciate this explanation. I've noticed the same pattern when I amended returns in the past. The technical reason is that the IRS's Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS) updates the ASED (Assessment Statute Expiration Date) markers across related tax periods when certain transaction codes hit the account.

Does this mean they're going to audit the 2022 return too? I had something similar happen and I'm a little worried now. Is it normal for them to look back at previous years when you amend?

I went through something similar last month and was totally stressed about what it meant! According to IRM 21.5.6.4.7, the 'as of date' changes are often system-generated and don't necessarily indicate a manual review. I was losing sleep until I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It explained that the date change was just part of normal amendment processing and showed me exactly what each code meant. Such a relief to understand what was actually happening instead of imagining worst-case scenarios!

Idk about using some random website to look at my tax info. How do u know it's legit? The IRS site has all this info for free if u know where to look.

I... I think I've used this before, if it's the same service. It seemed to work okay for me, though I was a bit hesitant at first. They didn't ask for any personal information beyond what was already on my transcript, which was somewhat reassuring.

Did the service accurately predict when your refund would be issued? I've seen similar transcript analysis tools before, but the timing predictions were often off by weeks.

It's like being stuck in IRS purgatory, isn't it? You file an amendment and then you're left wondering if anyone's even looking at it. I was in the same boat last year - amendment submitted and then radio silence for months. It's like throwing a message in a bottle into the ocean and hoping someone finds it. I finally got through to an actual human at the IRS using Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com). It's like having a fast pass at an amusement park - you pay a bit but skip the 3-hour phone queue. The agent confirmed my amendment was in the system and gave me an actual timeframe instead of leaving me guessing.

I had almost exactly this situation last year, and it turned out to be nothing to worry about. The 'as of' date changed several times over about a 6-week period, which probably, though not certainly, indicates automated processing rather than manual review. In my case, the amendment was processed successfully after about 16 weeks, and the refund (which was slightly different than expected) arrived approximately 2 weeks after that. The key is to check your transcript weekly rather than daily, as the constant checking might unnecessarily increase your anxiety.

Did you notice any particular pattern with how the 'as of' date moved? Mine seems to jump forward 2-3 weeks at a time, and I'm wondering if that indicates anything specific about where it is in processing.

I had a similar experience in 2022 when I amended to add some investment income I forgot. My 'as of' date bounced around like a pinball for weeks, but eventually settled down. The amended return was processed in exactly 20 weeks from submission.

My amendment took 22 weeks to process last year, and the 'as of' date changed at least 5 times. The IRS told me that each change represented a different processing stage, but they couldn't tell me specifically what each date change meant.

I've seen this happen before. When you amend a return, it can trigger system reviews that look like concerning activity but are actually routine. Here's what's likely happening: • The system flagged your account for a consistency check • The July 1 date is when that automated review will occur • Since your amendment doesn't change your refund, it's unlikely to cause issues • The system might be checking if the missing 1099-R impacts other tax years I'd caution against calling the IRS about this right now - it's likely just normal processing, and calling too early might flag your return for unnecessary manual review.

This is much more common than you'd think! Compared to last year when I amended my 2021 return, the IRS seems to be moving faster on amendments this year. When your 'as of' date changes, it's usually a sign that your return is moving through their processing pipeline, not necessarily that there's a problem. The fact that your amendment doesn't change your refund amount is actually good news - those tend to process faster than amendments that result in additional refunds or balances due. I'd expect you'll see resolution within 8-12 weeks compared to the 16+ weeks it took for more complex amendments last year.

Is there any way to know for sure if they're actually processing it? My amendment has been sitting for 10 weeks with no updates at all on the Where's My Amended Return tool.

I filed an amendment on April 15, 2024, and noticed the same thing - my 'as of' date for 2022 changed to May 20, 2024, even though I was amending my 2023 return. On June 2, 2024, it changed again to June 17, 2024. Finally, on June 30, 2024, my amendment was processed. From what I've gathered, these date changes are just system updates as your amendment moves through different processing stages. It doesn't necessarily mean they're reviewing your 2022 return specifically - it's just how their system records account activity across tax years.

That's helpful information, particularly the specific timeline. It seems, based on your experience and others, that the 'as of' date typically changes every 2-3 weeks during amendment processing, which might provide a rough way to gauge progress.
