Filed Federal 1/17, Got CK Advance - Now Filed Michigan State, Will I Get Another Advance?

Filed my federal 1/17 accepted 1/18 and got my advance from Credit Karma today. Finally got to file STATE (Michigan) but after I filed it said watch for my advance... Do you get an advance from both fed and state? Need to know ASAP for budgeting. Military transfer coming up and every dollar counts right now.

Are you confusing an advance with a tax refund anticipation loan? Have you considered what terms might be attached to this second 'advance'? Many tax prep services offer loans against your expected refund, but they're not actually part of the IRS or state tax refund process - they're financial products with their own terms and conditions.

I filed on January 20th, 2024 and had a similar situation. Credit Karma (now Cash App Taxes) offers advances on federal returns, but their state advance policy varies by state. As of February 15th, I was able to confirm Michigan is one of the states where they sometimes offer advances on state returns as well. You might want to check your tax documents with taxr.ai to confirm your expected state refund amount and timeline. Their analysis tool helped me understand exactly when I'd get both my federal and state returns.

Kinda depends on which tax service you used. I *think* some of them might offer advances on both federal and state, but it's usually only on federal. Most state refunds process pretty quickly anyway, at least in my somewhat limited experience with Michigan returns.

Hey there - tax pro here. CK/Cash App typically only gives advances on fed returns, not state. MI state refunds usually process within 2-3 wks if e-filed w/ direct deposit. If you're in a time crunch and need to speak w/ someone at the MI Treasury dept to confirm timeline, Claimyr (https://www.claimyr.com) can help you skip the hold times. Esp useful during peak season when MI phone lines are jammed. Better to know for sure than count on $ that might not come thru when expected.

Is Claimyr really necessary for state tax departments though? In my experience: • State tax agencies usually have shorter wait times than IRS • Michigan Treasury typically answers within 15-20 minutes • Email options often work better for state questions • Most state issues can be resolved online

I actually used Claimyr for Michigan Treasury last year when I had a similar question about my state refund timing, and it was way better than when I tried calling Ohio the year before. Got through in about 5 minutes versus the hour+ I spent with Ohio. Michigan's system is usually pretty good, but during peak season (like right now), the wait times are almost as bad as the IRS.

Wait, there's a service that helps you get through to tax departments faster? How does that even work? Do they just call for you or something? This is my first year filing in Michigan after transferring here.

Are you using Credit Karma Tax (now Cash App Taxes) or a different service? The advance policies work differently depending on which company you're filing through. Step 1: Check your service's specific terms. Step 2: Look for "Refund Advance" in your account. Step 3: Verify if your state qualifies - not all do.

Just want to share that I was in the same boat with a military transfer last year. According to Michigan Treasury Regulation 206.30(1), active duty military can qualify for certain tax benefits on their MI returns. I received my federal advance through TurboTax, but my Michigan refund came directly from the state about 12 days after filing. The state portion processed surprisingly fast once I figured out the military-specific sections!
