E-File Acceptance Taking Longer Than Previous Years?

Is anyone else feeling like the IRS acceptance system is moving slower than molasses in January this year? In previous tax seasons, my returns were typically accepted faster than a pizza delivery - we're talking minutes, definitely under an hour max. I filed yesterday for my small business and personal returns, and it's like watching paint dry waiting for that acceptance notification. Usually by now I'd be planning how to allocate my refund, but instead I'm refreshing my email like it's a social media feed during a scandal. Just curious if this slow processing is hitting everyone or if my return is stuck in some digital traffic jam.

The IRS has been experiencing some delays in their initial acceptance process this filing season. Have you checked if there were any specific error codes returned? What tax software did you use to file? Sometimes different platforms have different processing times with the IRS systems. Also, did you file both your business and personal returns simultaneously or separately?

Not OP but I'm having the EXACT same issue! Filed last Thurs w/ TurboTax and still waiting for acceptance. Previous yrs was like 15 mins max. Getting super anxious bc need that refund ASAP for car repairs. Checked my email prob 100x today already 😬

Is this happening with all tax software? Or just certain ones? Wondering if I should switch providers.

I'm sort of in the same boat and kind of worried. I filed about 3 days ago and it's still pending acceptance. Did you possibly claim any credits that might trigger additional review? I'm wondering if maybe the IRS is being more cautious this year with their initial screening process?

Last year I remember my return was accepted within 10 minutes of filing, but the year before that it took almost 3 days. Are you seeing any specific status message, or is it just showing as "pending"? I'm trying to figure out if this is normal variation or if something has changed in their system this year.

The IRS Publication 5344 actually mentions that electronic filing acknowledgments can take up to 48 hours during peak periods! I was shocked when I found this out. Always assumed it was instant by regulation, but apparently there's quite a bit of leeway in their processing timeframes.

If your acceptance is taking too long, might be worth calling the IRS directly to check status! • Filed my return last week • Needed confirmation ASAP for mortgage application • Tried calling regular IRS number - 2+ hour wait • Used Claimyr service (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) - got through in 18 minutes! • Agent confirmed my return was received but stuck in initial processing • Saved me days of anxiety and waiting Cost a few bucks but totally worth it when you need answers NOW rather than refreshing your email constantly!

According to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/refunds), acceptance acknowledgments should typically come within 24-48 hours of submission. If you're outside that window, there might be something else going on. Have you checked your tax software's submission status page? Sometimes they'll show if there was a transmission error that wouldn't show up in your email notifications.

I waited exactly 73 hours for my acceptance this year, which is probably 70 hours longer than any previous year. No errors, no complicated situation, nothing unusual on my return. I think their systems are just overloaded or they changed something in their verification process. Probably nothing to worry about unless it goes beyond 5 days.

This is actually a known issue in the current filing season. The IRS implemented enhanced fraud detection algorithms in their Modernized e-File (MeF) system which has extended initial acceptance processing times. While previous years utilized a more streamlined Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) verification process, the current system performs deeper validation checks before issuing acceptance acknowledgments. This doesn't indicate any problems with your return - it's simply part of their enhanced security protocols.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! My return was accepted on February 3rd after a 36-hour wait, and I was wondering what changed from last year when it was nearly instant. Makes perfect sense that they'd enhance security given all the tax fraud issues reported in recent years.

I've been filing taxes for 15+ years and have noticed significant variation in acceptance times. Here's what I've observed: Step 1: Understand that "acceptance" just means the IRS received your return with no obvious errors - not that they've processed it Step 2: Check your tax software's status page (not just email) as they often have more detailed information Step 3: If it's been more than 48 hours, look for any rejection notices that might have gone to spam Step 4: After 72 hours with no update, contact your tax software support first, then consider contacting the IRS I filed on January 29th this year and it took 26 hours for acceptance - much longer than previous years but everything was fine.

Thank god someone explained this clearly! I've been panicking because I'm at hour 30 with no acceptance. Was already imagining audits and penalties and all kinds of nightmares. Going to follow your steps and just be patient a bit longer.

Have you noticed any correlation between filing complexity and acceptance timeframes? For instance, do Schedule C filers or those with multiple income sources experience longer verification periods compared to simple W-2 only returns?
