Death Benefits for Kids + Self Employed Income: How to File SSA-1099 for Dependents?

I have custody of two kids getting death benefits and just got SSA-1099 forms totaling $10k. I also made $20k between self employment cleaning houses and a W2 caretaker job. Filing with 4 dependents this year. Never dealt with social security income before - do I need to report the kids benefits on my taxes? Will this mess up my refund?

Tax pro here. Those SSA-1099s for death benefits belong to the children, not you. If the benefits are their only income, they likely don't need to file. You should focus on your income ($20k) and claiming them as dependents. The death benefits won't affect your refund since it's not your income.
