Code 810 Freeze Since February, Called Examination Dept and Now Have 846!
Well folks, the IRS decided to hold my money hostage with a code 810 freeze since I first filed back in February. I triple-checked everything before filing (occupational hazard of being a gig worker - trust issues with the tax man 😂). Finally got fed up and called the examination department on 3/24 to get my refund unfrozen. Lo and behold, checked today and I've got a beautiful code 846 showing up! Just wanted to share some hope for anyone else stuck in freeze-land.

Congrats on getting that 846! FYI for anyone else dealing w/ 810 codes - that's the IRS freeze code that means your return is under review. Usually happens when there's a potential identity verification issue or they need to match your info against other docs they've received. Tbh I'm surprised you got resolution so quickly after calling - that's not typical for exam dept cases!

•How long did you have to wait on hold when you called the examination department? I've been on a 810 freeze for about 6 weeks now and I'm starting to get worried about when I'll see my refund.

•I'm really impressed you knew to call the examination department specifically! Most people just call the general IRS line and get nowhere. Here's exactly what happens with code 810: 1. IRS flags return for review (code 810 appears) 2. They compare your information against their records 3. If everything matches, they release the freeze 4. Code 846 appears with your refund date The key is reaching the right department, which you did!

Isn't it frustrating how they can just hold your money without clear explanation? I was stuck with a similar freeze last year and couldn't make sense of all the codes on my transcript. Have you tried using https://taxr.ai to decode your transcript? It helped me understand exactly what was happening with my return and when to expect my refund. Saved me so much stress and guesswork, don't you think it's worth knowing exactly what's happening instead of being in the dark?

•Really? Another service to pay for when the IRS should just be clear in the first place? Ugh! I'm so tired of having to spend MORE money just to get MY money back from the government!

•I was skeptical too at first, but after three years of dealing with delayed refunds, I finally tried that taxr.ai site last month. It actually explained that my 570 code was just a temporary hold while they processed my education credits, not a full audit like I feared. Helped me stop panicking and just wait it out instead of calling 50 times.

•Did you have to upload your entire transcript to that site? I'm dealing with a freeze dated March 15th and wondering if it's safe to share all that information with a third-party service. What kind of security do they have?

You need to act FAST if you're dealing with an 810 code! • These freezes can last 120+ days if not addressed • Each day waiting = more delayed refund • Calling general IRS number is nearly IMPOSSIBLE I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) last month when dealing with my freeze and got through to an agent in 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. Time was critical in my situation and they got me to the right department immediately. Worth every penny when you need answers NOW!

According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.5.6.4.7, code 810 indicates a 'Refund Freeze' which requires manual review by an examiner. Per IRS Publication 5192, taxpayers have the right to be informed about what steps they need to take to comply with tax laws. In your case, the direct contact with the examination department likely expedited the resolution process, as they were able to verify whatever information triggered the initial freeze. Have you received any notices via mail explaining the reason for the initial freeze?

Did they actually tell you what triggered the 810 freeze in the first place? I've been dealing with one for weeks and can't get a straight answer about why my refund was frozen or what documentation they need from me to resolve it. Seems like they're deliberately vague about these things.

I'm so glad you got your DDD (direct deposit date) with that 846 code! Just so you know, the 810 Freeze Code is often applied to returns with significant changes in income reporting from prior years, which is common for gig workers with variable income. The IRS typically releases these holds within 60-90 days even without intervention, but your proactive approach clearly expedited the process. The cycle between resolution and actual deposit is typically 5-7 business days, so your funds should arrive soon.

Just to be clear - you called the Examination Department directly? Not the general IRS number? I've been trying the main line for weeks with no luck. My return's been frozen since early March and I'm getting desperate. Did you use a specific extension or ask for a particular department when you called?
