Can I file my taxes with just my pay stub instead of a W2?
I'm in a bind with my taxes right now. I worked at Walgreens for literally 2-3 days back in December and got fired (long story, basically scheduling conflict). I only received one paycheck which was around $140 or so. The problem is they mailed my W2 to my old address and when I called HR they said it would take several weeks to get a new one sent out. The HR lady mentioned they could provide me with my one and only pay stub though. I'm trying to file my taxes ASAP to get my refund and don't want to wait weeks for this W2 from a job I barely worked at. Can I just use my pay stub information instead of the W2 for filing? Has anyone done this before? The amount is so small I'm wondering if it even matters but I don't want to mess up my taxes either.

You technically need your W2 to file your taxes correctly. While your pay stub will show similar information, the W2 includes important details that must be reported accurately, like federal and state taxes withheld and various benefit deductions. Since you're in this situation, you have a few options. First, you can request that Walgreens expedite your W2. They're legally required to provide it. Second, you could file an extension, giving you until October to file your return while you wait for the correct document. Third, you can contact the IRS directly at 800-829-1040 if you don't receive your W2 by mid-February. They'll send a form to your employer and issue you a substitute Form 4852 that you can use instead. For such a small amount of income, it might be tempting to skip reporting it, but that's not advisable. All income needs to be reported, regardless of the amount.

•Does the IRS even care about such a small amount though? Like $140 would barely change anything on their taxes, right? Also, how long does it usually take to get that substitute form thing? Because waiting until October seems excessive for such a small amount.

•Yes, the IRS does care about reporting all income regardless of the amount. Even small amounts need to be included to maintain accurate tax records. It's technically tax fraud to intentionally omit income, though realistically the impact on your tax liability for $140 would be minimal. The process for getting a substitute Form 4852 typically takes 2-3 weeks after contacting the IRS. You don't need to wait until October - that's just the maximum extension time available. You can file as soon as you have all your correct documentation.

I went through something similar last year when my former employer screwed up my W2. I was pulling my hair out until I found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) which saved me so much stress. They have this feature where you can upload your pay stub and it extracts all the relevant tax information and helps you figure out what you need for your return. It basically walks you through how to handle missing documents and even helped me determine if I should wait for the W2 or use the substitute form. The tool flagged exactly what information I was missing from the pay stub compared to what would be on my W2, which helped me make an informed decision. In your case with such a small amount, it might give you a clearer picture of your options.

•Is this service free? Because I'm not paying some fancy service just to figure out how to report $140 of income. Also, does it actually file your taxes for you or just tell you what to do?

•I'm a little skeptical about these tax tools. How does it actually work with the IRS substitute form process? Does it just tell you to contact the IRS anyway or does it have some special way to handle this?

•The service has a free evaluation that shows you what tax documents are missing and what information you need. It doesn't file your taxes for you but guides you through the process and helps you understand what's required for your specific situation. It works with the IRS substitute form by showing you exactly what information you'll need to provide on Form 4852, and then compares your pay stub information to what would normally be on your W2. It basically preps you before you contact the IRS so you know exactly what to ask for and what information you'll need to provide.

Just wanted to follow up - I actually tried taxr.ai after my last comment and it was surprisingly helpful. It confirmed that my pay stub didn't have all the information needed for filing (missing some tax withholding details that only appear on W2s) and gave me specific instructions for requesting the substitute form. The document comparison feature saved me from making a mistake with my filing. Much more straightforward than I expected and didn't cost me anything for my basic situation.

After dealing with a similar W2 mess last year, I discovered Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was skeptical at first but I was able to talk to a real person at the IRS who walked me through the substitute W2 process. They explained exactly what I needed to do with my pay stub information and how to properly report it while waiting for the official document. Saved me weeks of waiting for my previous employer to get their act together. Might be worth checking out if you decide to go the IRS route.

•Wait, how does this even work? The IRS phone lines are notorious for being impossible to get through. Is this actually legit or some kind of scam?

•This sounds too good to be true. The IRS literally never answers their phones. I spent 3 hours on hold last month and eventually gave up. If this actually works I'd be amazed.

•It works by using a callback system that continuously calls the IRS until it gets through, then connects you when an agent is available. It's completely legitimate - you're still talking directly to the IRS, Claimyr just handles the hold time for you. The reason the IRS phone lines seem impossible is because they get millions of calls and have limited staff. This service just automates the calling and holding process so you don't have to sit there with your phone for hours. When I used it, I got a call back when an agent was on the line ready to help with my missing W2 issue.

Alright I'm eating my words here. I was super skeptical but I tried Claimyr yesterday after seeing this thread. Got a call back in about 20 minutes and talked to an actual IRS agent who explained the whole substitute W2 process. They told me exactly what information from my pay stub I could use and what additional steps I needed to take. Apparently this happens all the time with employers sending W2s to wrong addresses. Definitely beats waiting on hold for hours or waiting weeks for HR to send a new W2.

I think you could also check if you can access your W2 online. A lot of companies use services like ADP or Workday where employees can log in and download their tax documents even after they've left the company. Worth asking Walgreens HR if they have an online portal where you could get your W2 immediately instead of waiting for a paper copy.

•I actually asked about that already and they said because I was only there for a few days, they never set me up with access to their employee portal. So frustrating! But thanks for the suggestion, it would have been the easiest solution.

•That's really annoying! Some companies have terrible systems for short-term employees. Another option might be to ask if they can email you a copy of your W2 instead of mailing it. Some HR departments are willing to do this if you explain your situation, even though it's not their standard procedure.

You'd be surprised how many people have this exact issue! I worked as a tax preparer and we always had clients with missing W2s from short-term jobs. If it helps, here's what you need from that pay stub: your gross wages, federal income tax withheld, social security tax withheld, and medicare tax withheld. Make sure you have ALL those numbers before trying to file. A pay stub usually has most of this but sometimes misses details that are only on the W2.

•Would tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block let you enter pay stub info instead of W2 info? Or would it force you to have the actual W2?
