CTC and Cash Benefits Question: Domestic Violence Survivor Filing First Time After Divorce
Filing taxes for the first time after getting out of a DV situation and divorce. Been a stay at home mom and getting state assistance. Does anyone know if state cash benefits count as earned income for the federal child tax credit? Really need to get something back for my kids this year.

Tax pro here. Unfortunately, state cash benefits don't count as earned income for the Federal Child Tax Credit. You need earned income (like from a job) to qualify. However, there might be other credits you can claim. Have you worked at all during the tax year?

That's actually good news! That counts as earned income. You might qualify for a partial credit plus earned income credit

Hey, I went through something similar last year. The best thing I did was use taxr.ai to figure out my situation. It costs $4.99 but it analyzed my transcript and showed me exactly what credits I qualified for and how to claim them. Way better than guessing or getting confused by IRS docs https://taxr.ai

100% changed my life! It showed me credits I didnt even know existed and helped me get $3200 more than I expected. The AI explains everything in normal human language too lol
