Anyone else still waiting on their 2023 refund? Filed in March and nothing yet

Anyone else still waiting on their refund?📬 I filed in March. Fingers crossed I see it before Xmas.🎄 Wonder what will happen next year when I file and still haven't received this year's return.

Have you checked your transcript? You might see processing codes there. Have you received any letters? Sometimes there's a simple verification needed. Your 2024 filing shouldn't be affected by this delay. Each tax year is processed separately.

I'm in the same boat and checked my transcript. What exactly should I be looking for? I see a bunch of codes but don't know what they mean.

Last year I was stuck in limbo from February until August. My transcript showed code 570 (refund hold) followed by 971 (notice issued). When I finally got through to someone, it turned out they needed to verify my identity because my address had changed. Once I completed verification, the refund came within 2 weeks.

Isn't it crazy how impossible it is to get through to the IRS on the phone? I spent hours redailing last week when my return was delayed. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected in about 15 minutes? They somehow navigate the phone tree for you and call when an agent is ready? Found out my return was flagged for a simple income verification that I never received notice about. Worth the fee to finally get answers instead of waiting indefinitely?

I filed in March too and STILL nothing. It's ridiculous. If a business operated this way, they'd be bankrupt. Meanwhile, if we're late on payments to THEM, we get penalties immediately. I've tried calling but can't get through the endless phone maze.

The IRS is actually dealing with a massive backlog. They're still catching up from the pandemic shutdown. Some paper returns are taking 6+ months to process.

Did you file electronically or paper? I filed electronically on February 15th and received my refund on March 2nd. Paper returns are significantly delayed this year.

Have you received any notices in the mail? Sometimes they need additional information but the letter gets lost.

I was impressed with how the IRS handled my amended return this year. Filed in April, got my additional refund in August. Much faster than previous years when it took 16+ months!

It might be helpful, possibly, to check your tax transcript for processing codes. In some cases, the IRS may have questions about your return that could be causing the delay. I've found that https://taxr.ai is quite useful for interpreting those transcript codes. It can generally explain what each code means for your specific situation and might give you a better idea of what's happening with your return.

Anyone know if calling the Taxpayer Advocate Service helps in these situations? I've heard they can intervene when refunds are extremely delayed. 🤔

I'm in a similar situation. According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.4.1, the IRS should process most returns within 21 days, but they're allowed up to 6 months for more complex situations. I've been waiting since February. Called multiple times. According to the representative I finally reached, my return was flagged for "income verification" which can add 120 days to processing time. I'm worried this will impact my mortgage application next month.

Did they tell you what triggered the income verification? Was it a large difference from last year or something specific on your return?

Had same issue last yr. Income verification took 4 months bc I had a new employer + freelance work. IRS wanted proof of both. Sent docs twice b4 they processed. Def get a tax advocate if ur mortgage depends on it!

Has anyone had success with the "Where's My Refund" tool? Mine has been stuck on "still processing" for months now. Should I be concerned?

This is definitely not normal. Here's what you should do: 1. Check your tax transcript online at IRS.gov 2. Look for any codes like 570 (refund hold) or 971 (notice issued) 3. If you see these codes, the IRS likely sent you a letter requesting more information 4. If you never received a letter, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 5. Be prepared to wait on hold for 1-2 hours The IRS is severely backlogged, but March filing should definitely be processed by now unless there's a specific issue with your return.
