Any better tax return websites than TurboTax? We owe $2000 but don't make much money!

Just plugged our W-2s into TurboTax and I'm honestly freaking out right now. It's saying we owe the IRS over $2,700!! My husband and I are both working full-time but barely making ends meet as it is. Our combined income is around $62K and we've never owed this much before. We both have standard withholdings on our paychecks, so I'm completely confused why we suddenly owe so much. Is TurboTax messing up our return somehow? Are there better tax websites that might give us a different result? I've heard some people mention FreeTaxUSA and H&R Block. Should we just bite the bullet and hire an accountant to find deductions we're missing? We really can't afford to pay this much right now and I'm starting to panic. Any suggestions would be so appreciated!!! Has anyone else had this problem with TurboTax calculating way higher taxes than expected???

I've been doing taxes for friends and family for over 15 years, and I can tell you that the software isn't usually the problem - they all use the same tax laws. The difference you're seeing is probably related to your withholding throughout the year, not the tax software itself. A few questions: Did either of you change jobs this past year? Did you both check "Married" on your W-4s? Sometimes when both spouses work and both check "Married" on their W-4s, not enough tax gets withheld because each employer assumes they're the only income source for both of you. Also, have you entered all your information yet? Don't panic just after entering W-2s. You might still have deductions or credits you qualify for. Try completing the entire return including any student loan interest, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, childcare expenses, or education credits if applicable.

But doesn't TurboTax charge more for adding those deductions? I heard they make you upgrade to deluxe or something to even input student loan interest.

We both started new jobs in September but kept our withholding status the same. And yes, we both have "Married" checked on our W-4s! I had no idea that could cause less tax to be withheld. We haven't finished adding everything yet. We do have some student loan interest and made some small charitable donations. No mortgage or kids yet. Should we switch to a different tax service or finish with TurboTax first?

Yes, that "Married" withholding status when both spouses work is often the culprit. Each employer calculates withholding as if their employee is the only income earner for the household, which results in under-withholding. For 2025, you might want to update your W-4s to the "Married but withhold at higher single rate" option or specify an additional amount to withhold from each paycheck. I'd recommend finishing your return in TurboTax first to see your final numbers after all deductions. Then you can try another service to compare if you want. Many services like FreeTaxUSA or TaxSlayer can import your PDF from TurboTax, saving you from re-entering everything. Just make sure you're entering identical information on both platforms for a fair comparison.

After dealing with similar frustration last year (owed $3,200 out of nowhere!), I tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze my tax documents and situation. It actually identified that my employer had miscoded some of my income on my W-2 which was causing weird calculation issues in TurboTax. The tool scans your tax documents, finds potential errors or missed deductions, and explains things in normal human language. It caught that I was missing out on a student loan interest deduction that I qualified for but TurboTax hadn't prompted me about correctly. Not saying TurboTax is calculating your taxes wrong, but having a second opinion on your tax documents might help spot if something unusual is happening with your withholdings or W-2 coding.

How does it work exactly? Do I have to give it all my personal info? Sounds sketchy to give some random website my tax docs.

Does it actually find you more money back? Or is it just telling you what might be wrong without fixing anything?

You upload your tax documents and it uses AI to analyze them, looking for errors, inconsistencies, or overlooked deductions. They use bank-level encryption and don't store your documents after analysis. It's basically giving you an expert review without paying for a tax pro. It doesn't file your taxes for you - it's more like having a tax expert look over your shoulder pointing out what you might be missing. In my case, I took the issues it found back to TurboTax, fixed them myself, and ended up owing $1,100 instead of $3,200. It shows you exactly what to fix and where.

Just wanted to update after trying taxr.ai - wow! It spotted that both my spouse and I had our W-4s set up wrong (exactly like the top comment mentioned). It also found that my employer had miscoded a reimbursement as taxable income which added about $800 to what we "owed." I fixed these issues in TurboTax and our balance due dropped from $2,100 to $680. Still not great but MUCH better. Would have NEVER caught these issues on my own! Also showed us how to adjust our withholdings so we don't have this problem next year.

If you're still having issues after checking your return for errors, you might want to call the IRS directly to discuss payment options. BUT good luck getting through - I spent 4+ hours on hold last year trying to set up a payment plan. Eventually I found https://claimyr.com which got me connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - basically they navigate the phone tree and wait on hold for you, then call when an agent is ready. I was super skeptical at first, but I was desperate after multiple failed attempts and it actually worked. The agent helped me set up a reasonable monthly payment plan for what I owed. Just mentioning since if you end up still owing, having a payment plan makes it much less stressful.

Wait, so they just wait on hold for you? How does that even work with the IRS phone system? Don't you have to enter your SSN and stuff?

This sounds like total BS. No way the IRS is allowing some third party to bypass their phone system. I've been calling for YEARS and there's no secret trick.

They use their system to navigate the initial IRS phone menu and wait in the queue. When they reach a live agent, you get a call and are connected directly to that agent. You don't provide any personal information to Claimyr - you only share your info directly with the IRS agent once you're connected. It's not bypassing anything - they're literally just waiting on hold so you don't have to. The IRS doesn't ask for your SSN until you're actually talking to an agent. I was shocked it worked too, but after wasting entire afternoons on hold, having someone else do that part was worth it.

Ok I need to publicly eat my words. After posting that skeptical comment, I was still trying to get through to the IRS about an issue with my 2023 return. Decided to try that Claimyr thing out of frustration. Got a call back in 27 minutes saying they had an IRS agent on the line. I was connected immediately to a very helpful woman who resolved my issue in about 15 minutes. After spending WEEKS trying to get through on my own, this was honestly life-changing. If you do end up owing and need to set up a payment plan, definitely worth using this instead of wasting hours on hold. Sorry for being a jerk in my previous comment!

For what it's worth, I've been using FreeTaxUSA for the past 3 years after getting fed up with TurboTax's rising prices and constant upselling. The federal filing is free regardless of complexity, and state returns are like $15. The interface isn't as polished as TurboTax, but it asks all the same questions and finds the same deductions in my experience. I'd recommend filling out your return there too as a comparison - it won't cost anything to prepare the federal return, only to file. But like others said, the software isn't usually the issue - it's likely something with your withholding or a missed deduction. Different software won't magically make you owe less unless there's a specific deduction or credit that TurboTax is missing (which is rare).

+1 for FreeTaxUSA! Been using them for 5 years now. TurboTax wanted to charge me $89 for "self-employment" features when I had a tiny 1099 for like $600. FreeTaxUSA handled it all for free. Never going back.

Thank you for this suggestion! We'll definitely try FreeTaxUSA as a comparison. When we put our info into TurboTax, we only got to the W-2 part before seeing the amount we owe. We haven't added any deductions yet, but I'm worried TurboTax will make us pay for upgrades to add things like student loan interest. Do you know if FreeTaxUSA lets you enter student loan interest and charitable donations without upgrading to a paid version?

FreeTaxUSA includes ALL federal tax forms and deductions in their free version, including student loan interest, charitable donations, investment income, self-employment, etc. The only thing you pay for is state filing ($15) or audit assistance if you want it. That's actually one of the biggest differences - TurboTax's "free" version is only free for very simple returns, then they charge for adding forms like student loan interest deductions. FreeTaxUSA doesn't do that bait-and-switch thing. I usually run my taxes through both just to double-check my results, and they've always matched within a few dollars.

Something to consider - did you receive any unemployment benefits? Those are taxable and if you didn't elect to have taxes withheld, that could explain the surprise bill. Also, check if you got any advanced Child Tax Credit payments if you have kids. That can make a big difference in what you owe vs. what you expected.

Or stimulus payments! Some people think those were tax-free but they actually impact your return if you got them.
