After 9 month wait, IRS refund check rejected by bank - now 2 month hold?!

Finally got my refund check after waiting 9 months. Went to deposit it today and the bank couldn't verify it! After 30 minutes of back and forth with the teller they finally accepted it but put a 2 month hold on it. This is ridiculous - anyone else deal with this?

Former bank teller here - this is actually pretty common with IRS checks over $10k. Banks are required by law to put holds on large government checks for fraud prevention. Try calling the bank's fraud department directly to see if they can reduce the hold time.

Pro tip: Next time request direct deposit. Never had issues with DD and usually hits within 48hrs of release

Try going to a different branch. Sometimes different locations have different policies on hold times. Worth a shot!
